Question From Guest on power steering fluid

I think you can use brake fluid instead of power steering fluid in the p/s reservoior. Is this right?

Response From Jeff Norfolk

No. Power steering fluid acts as a lubricant among other things. Brake fluid dose not. Not a good idea.

Response From way2old Top Rated Answer

You can use transmission fluid in the power steering system. Brake fluid will deteriorate the seals and hoses.

Thanks everyone

Hello folks,
I have a 1997 chevy lumina, 3.1 engine, this is just the base line model, with 151,000 miles on it.

I need to flush the power steering fluid, which is probably overdue!
Does anyone know the Type of fluid to use?

Thanks in Avance for any Help,

Response From Hammer Time

That takes regular, universal power steering fluid, nothing special. You can even use Dexron ATF but I recommend using PS fluid.

The parts store can help you out with that one & it usually tells you on the bottle what years & make that it is made for

Question From bluez956 on Leaking power steering fluid

1998 Plymouth Grand Voyager SE, 3.3L, 216K

It is leaking power steering fluid. Not from the pump or the lines.

Are there seals inside the rubber boots that may need replacing?

Response From Hammer Time Top Rated Answer

You need a new rack and pinion.

Question From timothyjg1 on 96 Sable leaking power steering fluid

My 1996 mercury sable is leaking power steering fluid. I think it is only leaking after I shut the car off but am not sure if it is leaking while driving. Any ideas?

Response From Hammer Time

You can be sure that the leaking is happening while your driving and it's under pressure. You will see the residual drips after it's parked from previous leakage.

To determine what the problem is, it just needs to be inspected thoroughly. The lines are pretty notorious for leaks but it can also be the pump or the rack and pinion.

Response From Jeff Norfolk Top Rated Answer

Th add as Mr Hammer said the rack, on the drivers side, is a common leak on this model.

Question From tjgolf on Leaking power steering fluid

I have a 2004 Dodge Dakota, 6cyl, starting leaking power steering fluid, starting whining and checked fluid and it was very low, filled it up and a few days later it is low again....any suggestions on where to begin finding the problem? thanks.........

Response From dmac0923 Top Rated Answer

My first inspection would be where the power steering lines connect to the radiator. Metal lines are probably rusted out

Response From Hammer Time

Well, it would probably be a good idea to examine the car and find out where it's leaking from.
