94 Plymouth Sundance won't go in gear or start

Question From blrominger on 94 Plymouth Sundance won't go in gear or start

I have a '94 Plymouth Sundance 90,000 miles.

I started my car to let it warm up. When I was leaving, I put it in reverse, it started rolling. Put it back in park, tried it again, same thing. I put it in drive, same thing. I put it back in park, turned off the ignition, now it won't start! I'm not that car savvy but I do know a little. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Response From Hammer Time

Does the shifter feel normal when you move it through the gears?

Response From blrominger

It felt normal but usually you can hear it go into gear, which I don't remember happening.

Response From Hammer Time Top Rated Answer

I was referring to the shifter handle itself. It sounds like you could have broken the shifter cable but you should be able to feel that in the shifter when it moves.

'90 Plymouth Sundance - Blown Head Gasket - Repairable?

Question From aaronbertholf on '90 Plymouth Sundance - Blown Head Gasket - Repairable?

I bought a couple days ago a 1990 Plymouth Sundance 2 door with a 2.5L 4 cylinder Chrysler K engine. I paid just $300 for it from someone off of Craigslist, originally wanted $500. The head gasket is blown, it did start up the day I bought it but the engine ran very rough and puffed not a lot but white smoke from the exhaust. It has 74,450 original miles on it. Then the next day I tried to get it home, it would just not start at all. I put in 50/50 coolant antifreeze in the radiator since I didnt see much in it. Tried a few times trying to get it to start. My mother did notice black smoke coming out of the exhaust a tiny bit. Then after stopping attempting to start it, all of the antifreeze was on the ground so I dont know if I bursted a hose or what. Is it possible some of the combustion chambers are flooded with coolant and thats why it would not start? I did get the car towed however, it went to my dad's house for him too look at soon. Is there a possibility my Sundance is toast?

Response From Hammer Time Top Rated Answer

If your knowingly driving a car around with a blown head gasket, then you shouldn't be surprise when you fry it.

Why would you pay $300 for a car that needs $1,000 worth of repairs and then would only be worth $500?

1994 Plymouth Sundance - help

Showing 4 out of 4 Posts
Question From Guest on 1994 Plymouth Sundance - help

Hi there,
I own the car stated in the topic..
a 1994 Plymouth Sundance, 107000km on it, 4 cylinder (not entirely sure of how many litres)
My issue is likely not specific to the car, but as the only thing I really know is how to change my oil, seems I'm in need of some expertise.

When I got the car I knew the fuel tank indicator was off. I was told this when I got it.. fine. So I decided to run it to completely empty, while watching the trip odometre to get a solid idea of how far I'd get on a tank.
Eventually it was empty, parked at the house, not going anywhere. Other expenses came up and car stayed parked there for 4-5 months.

Now that I want it back on the road, it won't start.
I've put about 5 gallons of gas in it (learning today that leaving it empty was a bad idea)
I've also added a dose of fuel line defrosting stuff.
Turn the key, it cranks, but doesn't start. Everything seems normal.. except for the part where it doesn't start.
I'm leaving it plugged in overnight (it's really cold today) and willt ry it in the morning.

Any tips for reviving a car that's been sitting with an empty gas tank for 4-5 months? Any and all help would be appreciated.
Thanks

Response From Tom Greenleaf

It was probably so dry of fuel that the lines are full of air. If you can hear the fuel pump buzz when key is turned to just "run" position then you may be just fine. I'd try either bleeding air out at fuel rail or spray some starting fluid in throttle body (re-assemble air cleaner) and it might fire up an quit but then work the next try. Just don't burn up the starter with futile tries if no response,

T

Response From Guest

Awesome thanks.
I came here to avoid making the starter fail heh. Thanks again for the input.

Response From Lando10101 Top Rated Answer

if there is a shrader valve in the fuel rail just bleed the system there it will look like your tire inflation valves cap and all . if you do not here your pump kick on have someone stand by tank area with gas cap off and listen for the buzz when you put the key forward . if no noise try whacking the gas tank with a mallet around the center area . may just be siezed up like old carburators when left without fuel .

93 Plymouth Sundance Duster (v6)

Question From Arctic Fox on 93 Plymouth Sundance Duster (v6)

I had the transmission replaces about 9 months ago, and since day-one I've heard a whine from that area while driving down the road. Sounds like gears meshing without oil. :) Pitch/frequency of sound is dependant on vehicle speed, not engine speed, and is not the brakes.

I went back to the transmission shop a couple weeks after I first noticed the noise; and after the mechanic taking me on a hair-raising test drive through a mall parking lot (speeds up to 45MPH), he said he couldn't hear anything (when I could definately hear it, even sitting in the passenger seat).

And now there seems to be this "space"... feels like the CV joints are getting bad, but I just replaced them. I'm thinking the noise has something to do with it, but after what I've already had to deal with at the tranny shop, I'd rather not go back till I have a more definitive idea on what's goin on.

Ideas? Thanks!

-A.F.

Response From Tom Greenleaf

The trans shouldn't be making noise. Quick check on that it's full of fluid before you go crazy might be the answer. CV joints do make noise when they are bad even if new (you can have a bad one) but you usually notice them on turns.

Can only suggest that you document your observations with the trans shop as this is NOT normal. T

Response From Arctic Fox Top Rated Answer

Thanks Tom, that's what I thought. I've, so far, replaced the brakes, transaxle and entire hub (with bearings), but the "gear whine" noise is still there. All fluids were filled, but I replaced the fluids, filter and cleaned the magnet just to make sure.

I've been looking for the original receipts for the transmission, but can't find them - and I know the people at the tranny shop are going to give me problems; I've heard a lot of bad stories about them from other people... AFTER I had the work done. :(

I think I'll have it checked this week, before bills come in. :) If all works out, I'll let you guys know.
If they give me any problems, I'll name names.

Question From mrbig1712 on 2006 Chrylser Sebring Transmission

74k miles, trans shifts hard sometimes, it was a fleet rental before i got it at 68k, only had it about 3 months, fast clicking noise when going into reverse and drive, and shifts hard sometime when coming to a complete stop, no noticable power loss yet, will a trans flush and new filter help before i have to put it in the shop and get the trans rebuilt or replaced?

Response From Hammer Time

Is that clicking mostly when the wheels are turned and accelerating?

Response From Hammer Time

Yeah, I've heard that out of Chrysler transmissions before. You need to get it into a reputable trans shop soon to have it analyzed.

Response From mrbig1712

i only notice it when i am coming to a complete stop in drive like at a stop light or when i am shifting from park to reverse and then again from reverse to drive

Response From mrbig1712 Top Rated Answer

i had this type of problem with a plymouth sundance FWD and the seals went bad, would not go into gear once the trans got warmed up, and the second time was with a dodge shadow, i traded it before it got too bad, i know i should not have gotten another FWD chrysler
