Question From chickenhouse on 65 Corvair

Pulled out orig stuck engine and getting ready to uplift another that runs. Was an automatic engine- going into standard car. Have used the clutch input shaft to extract the pilot bearing and now wanting some "old fart" advice on any other things to look for before install. Clutch disc looke good & pressure plate is good enough that a scotchbrite will clean it up good. Timing gears look good etc. What am I missing?

Response From Loren Champlain Sr

Be sure to replace the pilot bearing/bushing. I'd recommend having the flywheel resurfaced. If you can afford it, I'd replace the disc and the pressure plate while you've got it torn down. Better to do it, now.

Hahahaha ............ I wanted to see who was going to respond to this

Response From Loren Champlain Sr

I think that there's only three or four of us here old enough to remember Corvairs. Radiator replacement was a b..ch.

It was a piece of cake, just like the Karmen Ghia

II believed that was the first time the name "Monza" was used too.

Response From Loren Champlain Sr Top Rated Answer

Oh, and don't forget the 140hp 'SPYDERS'. LOL. (The Monza's were just a wimpy 110hp)

Response From Hammer Time

Yeah, twin carb pancakes

Of course I didn't want anything to do with them back then............LOL

Response From chickenhouse

O K old farts. I said that cause I turned 60 3 months ago which qualifies me. This is the wimpy 110 hp. weeny I know. This is not my goal for a classic as I just sold a 62 Nova rag. My dad bought my sis a 62 vair with powerglide. What a dog!. I have never pulled (dropped) one of these engines. Whatan experience! The crank is above the cam, the timing gear cover is also the bell housing! Go figger? I called O'Reilys for the timing gasket, they said they would call back. Told them the timing gasket is on the bellhousing. They never called back. Making my own from a Busch box. Ain't it fun?

Response From Loren Champlain Sr

60? Okay, you are in! Coors Light boxes work quite well, too. Did the '62 have just a little lever mounted on the dash for the transmission? No park, of course. Can't remember, for sure.

Response From chickenhouse

I'm not sure Loren, that car is not here. I got the whole undercarriage ( engine transaxle, front steering etc) and the body is sitting on the ground about 4 miles from me. I am supposed to pick it up & bring it home also. Good glass & other parts remain. The 60 we had DID have the little lever on the right side of the steering wheel on the dash. Powerglide, so they called it. Peanutbutter drive. WOOF! I'll need to get an ignition key for this one soon. Don't know what's in the trunk, no key for that either.

Response From Tom Greenleaf

Welcome to the "old fart" club. You aren't that far off from some of us. NAPA can be a lot of help with some old car stuff, IMO,

Transmission SCREECHING

Question From colecgg on Transmission SCREECHING

screeching noise started to happen maybe 2000 miles ago. Happens very randomly but usually starts up if I drive the car hard. Sometimes goes weeks without making a noise. Noise instantly goes away when I depress the clutch pedal, even just an inch, but comes right back when I take my foot off the clutch.

(Link is to a youtube video I uploaded of the noise that is occurring.)

Car is a 2004 civic Si by the way.

Response From Tom Greenleaf Top Rated Answer

Why are you so hard on the thing first and why did you wait 2,000 miles to find out what it is? It's not going to heal.
For a two second video my guess is possibly a pilot bearing/bushing. If so trans is coming out to fix that and time to change out or a good look at the clutch.
To me pilot bearings are rare to make noise and think most likely from a lousy clutch job along the way,

Question From Zombiegreaser on 1991 toyota pickup

Year of vehicle: 1991
Make of vehicle: Toyota
Model of vehicle: Pickup
Engine size: 2.4 4 cyl manual tranny

found metal shards in the the oil pan and wont slip into gear car starts and runs does not drive. please help!!!!!

Response From Discretesignals

How does the engine sound? Why would you pull the oil pan off for a transmission problem?

Do you mean that you cannot put the transmission into gear with the engine running? Can you put it into gear with the engine off?

Response From Zombiegreaser

i was pulling the oil pan to replace it. then found the shards. and yeah i mean i cannot put it into gear with it running.

Response From Discretesignals Top Rated Answer

If the transmission will go into gear with the engine off, but not running, that means either the clutch isn't fully disengaging or the stub on the end of the input shaft is hanging onto the pilot bearing.

You identified what the shards are from in the oil pan?

Response From Hammer Time

What's the big question? You have confirmed that the transmission is coming apart. Now you replace/rebuild it.
