1999 Toyota rav 4 accelerating problem

Question From Xoharleyxo on 1999 Toyota rav 4 accelerating problem

I have a 1999 Toyota rav 4, 204,000 miles, I think the engine is 2.0

A few months back when I would first turn the car on it wouldn't idle properly. It would make a wooow, woooow sound and the Rpm meter would go up and down to the point that it would almost stall out. Then all of a sudden, after a few minutes it would be fine. Then it moved to sometimes the car would idle fine and then you would go to drive and when you push the gas, little to nothing would happen and then you would put it back into park, the weird idle would happen again, you wait, and then it would go back to normal and drive fine. Or it would stop driving and then you slam the gas a few times and finally take off like a rocket and then the car is fine for the rest of the trip.

We took it to a shop and had it put on a machine. Nothing came up. They changed the plugs and tuned it up. I then had a problem with the exhaust and had to have it welded. From what I understand they also check my oxygen sensor because they thought that may have been the problem. I had an air hose that came off and it has since been re attached.

Now it seems as if there is some resistance when I push the gas. I he to push down harder for it to go the same speed as before. It has now gotten to the point that it will idle perfect, you can start driving and the. All of a sudden you push the gas and nothing happens and then a few seconds to minutes later it is perfectly fine or you smash the gas til it finally goes and it is fine. Also it sometimes shoots up in rpms for no reason when I am driving down the street. It's extremely quick and then it goes back to normal.

When you hook it up to the computer it saws everything is peachy so we are at a loss.

Response From Xoharleyxo

It now seems as though when the gas pedal is not working I hear a pop sound from under the front of the car some where.

It runs great otherwise. I'd hate to have to get rid of it because of this but it doesn't seem like anyone knows what's wrong

Response From Tom Greenleaf

Not sure about much of this but the thing has to have some codes waiting and not sure why none have showed up for at least some direction. Pouncing on throttle till it seems to clear, what seems like a back fire, glowing exhaust don't add up to one specific thing to me anyway.

Is timing belt and the maintenance list on this all up to date both miles and time? You said it was hooked up to a computer whatever that means and everything is "peachy" and it's not so suggest another check. It's an interference engine so could easily be a quick total loss if that isn't right to valves and more.

Again at a minimum this needs a better check general condition of a list of things to get more dependable miles and time out of it IMO. Vacuum anything, integrity of air intake parts etc. If sludged up or oil change neglected it's paying for it now,

T

Response From Xoharleyxo

Unfortunately I am the daughter of the father that does all of the maintenance on the car. I keep telling him that it needs to go back and get like at again. As far as the computer, that's what he called it. I am assuming what he meant was there were no codes to even suggest what was wrong.

Response From Tom Greenleaf Top Rated Answer

OK. IMO you need a better code reading if nothing showed up. I wouldn't wait, find out now. Parts outlets increasingly will do this for free, don't buy anything yet and write down code #s and post them. Some will give you a printout some may not. Still get #s not their interpretation yet. There has to be info waiting so if nothing shows go somewhere else even if it costs. The readers are NOT all the same.

Read you owner's manual for maintenance schedules and stick to that. Oil changing is listed as "regular use" or "severe" so go by the "severe" schedule. Almost nobody really fits in what manuals say is regular use.

I really think you can ward off something expensive by getting to this now, not later,

T

Response From Xoharleyxo

I keep telling my da to take it back into a different place but its difficult to get him to listen to me. I traded him vehicles for the week because last night the engine was idling fine but when I pushed the gas, nothing happened. And then, magic, it was fine. I took video of it to show my dad, but he said he can't fix it if it doesn't mess up when he takes it to the shop :/

Response From Discretesignals

That is why you need to leave it with the shop, so they can drive it and see if they can duplicate the problem. It may have to be at the shop for a few days or until they can get it to act up.

Response From Xoharleyxo

Well I got stuck in a Parking lot. Car starting idling crazy, with the needle flying up and down and the lights dimming. Managed to get into a parking lot. Put it in park. Car started idling fine at 1000 rpms but I could literally stand on the gas petal and nothing happened. It stayed right at 1000 rpms. I put it in reverse then drive then park and magic, it worked again. I left it with my dad who asked his mechanic friends about it and he drove it for a week. It did nothing. He said the guy at the shop said that if the engine light isn't on then they can't figure it out with out trial and error. The guy told him we will have to wait til it breaks down to figure it out. My dad said to keep the gas level above a quarter tank cause it could be sucking stuff up from somewhere. It has messed up twice since he gave it back to me. >.< I am at a loss.

Also when i started my car for work yesterday I let it run for 10 mins and when I went to leve the whole inside smelled like burnt rubber or belt but noting was squealing.

Response From GC

Not sure I can be of any help on this, but couple questions. When its misbehaving and you stand on the accelerator with no change of rpms, does the sound from the engine change when you press accelerator? If you put it in gear when it is acting up, what happens? Does it idle forward like normal? Have you heard any noises from it when its running well? Answers might be of no use, but questions are free, so might as well ask a bit.

Response From Xoharleyxo

No sound from the engine and yes it will idle forward like normal. But if I am driving when it acts up then I don't go anywhere but the rpms rise until I shoot off down the street and then it's either fine or goes back to not accelerating a few more times. I haven't noticed any noises but it feels like there is a blip in the gas flow every now and again. Hard to explain.

Response From Tom Greenleaf

"My dad said to keep the gas level above a quarter tank cause it could be sucking stuff up from somewhere."

Fuel picks up at same fixed spot no matter how full. Still good to keep 1/4+ if only to keep fuel pump cooler and last longer.

If your mechanic can't pluck some history out of this with a code reader he needs a better code reader IMO. It does NOT need to have a light staying on if just something is pending or noticed but will lose that memory if behaving long enough or reset then nothing may show up. Problem is lurking. Intermittent troubles are tough and sometimes can hide but think this could be found with better equipment,

T

Response From GC

Unless you have access to a good scan tool that can stream data, you'll probably have to take it in. Sounds like something going on with tps/throttle body/iac to me but just a guess without being able to look at data.
