1996 Dodge Ram mis-firing on all cylinders. Starts but runs poorly.I have replaced the pick- up coil and the oxygen sensor.The truck ran fine then check engine light came on and truck is coughing and bucking around 50 MPH.Truck has about 180000 miles on a 5.9 liter V8.

I would try checking the fuel pressure first .. you can rent/borrow a
pressure test at most autoparts store. post your results here .. check it with key on engine off and key on enginerunning.

99 dodge ram runing rough and stalling

The truck has had this problem for a while. When started the truck idles perfect but after it has been running for a couple minutes the trucks starts making a lound hissing noise then begins missfiring and eventully dies I have narrowed down the hissing noise to the IAC valve. It runs extremely rich when it starts to stall/misfire and the hissing noise becomes louder. I checked the downstream oxygen sensor and it reacted like it should the voltage when up when it started running rich but for some reason the voltage does not fluctuate back and forth like the computer is not reacting to it. What are your thoughts on this?

I just recently cleaned the CARB ON MY DODGE RAM 91 3.9l v6 and it was running like a champ ... so I was feeling good and decided to get a new oxygen sensor since my carb was clean and to get a good reading ... went to the car parts store and the guy sold me a generic one , well that’s when things started , at idle it almost chokes out and then it revs up and starts the loop again , changed the throttle position sensor for a new one , also took a look at the map sensor and it seems to work and also gave a clean up on the idle position sensor ( it looks like a solenoid with a bolt head coming out )now after all that when my throttle position sensor is connected and I disconnect the map sensor vacuum hose the problem is mitigated a little and runs a bit smoother but if I disconnect the throttle position sensor and re connect the map sensor vacuum hose it runs good again . So to summarize, is this because the oxygen sensor is not the right one ( I connected the cables identical to all the installation guides I could find on the net) or is this some other problem ? I would hate to go get a original part for no reason (generic cost 250 pesos (I live in Mexico) but the original is something like 800 pesos) please if any body has an idea please share.

First off, your truck doesn't even have a carb. It's fuel injected.

You took a good running engine and tried to fix it and now it doesn't run at all. It sounds like you bought a universal 0/2 sensor and didn't know how to wire it correctly. You probably should tow it to a reputable shop before you make matters worse.

not true the dodge ram 91 comes with a single line fuel injected carb ,holey I think is the brand , not a true fuel injection system , and there is not a lot of ways to connect an o2 sensor and I followed the instructions by the book , and down here in mexico repair shops that aren't dodge , just start pulling stuff of the motor or cheat you in repairs .... no thank you

No such thing. It's either fuel injected or carbed and the 3.9 was all fuel injected.

In 1987, its first year, the 3.9 used Holley 6280 two-barrel feedback carburetors. This setup may have lasted into 1988 on Dakotas, but then Dodge slapped an EFI 2-barrel intake and induction on the 318 and the 3.9. They shared a Holley throttle body, until the Magnum versions, and used a non-vacuum advance distributor.

The fuel injection from 1988 to 1991 was single-point, central fuel injection; gas was injected into the throttle body. This system was relatively inefficient, but still easier to control and maintain than a carburetor; replacing it with a modern multiple-port injection system in 1992 resulted in a power boost (though since the heads and other parts were upgraded at the same time, partly for more interchangeability with the 318, it's hard to isolate the effect of the better injection system).

so yes it is fuel injected in to a throtle body very similar to a carburator ... but that's beside the point .... not going to a shop man , I make 10 bucks a day at work here in mexico , do you have any idea what it is ??? are universal o2 sensors known to be faulty ??? would a spec o2 sensor from chrystler?

and fuel pump and filter and also a map sensor, cleaned injectors, coolant sensor, timing redone and also throttle control swtch.
Wat else could i check so it wont run so rough and feel like it has no power, but when u get it over 10 mph it drives good but once u get to redlight it wantss to die and wont take off right ans sometimes it will die. Does anybody know anything that could help me out.

Some ideas to check at the age:

Vacuum leaks, PCV system - sludge situation if any.

? How much was the timing off? It doesn't really change on it's own unless touched.

Clean throttle body.

One more for now is check lash in timing chain. TMK if OE it would still be a nylon cam gear and they don't hold up well with time, never mind miles. It's an interference engine (pretty sure) meaning valves can crash into pistons if it goes - worth paying attention to those even though they can last a long time,

1989 and a truck? I don't think most or any O2 sensors would cause rough running alone as they can on newer stuff. It may be bad but IMO for the year more to tell you something isn't quite right to tend to and the ones I've personally dealt with the result of another problem rather than the source.

If misfiring or raw fuel overloads a converter they can and will clog up and the common feel of that was (to me) low even power as like an exhaust restriction which it would become. Would usually work OK cold for a while then lose power but smoothly up to quitting.

You can do a simple test for exhaust restriction if you want to rule that out by just watching actual manifold vacuum at idle and with no load again at 2,000 RPMs and they should be dang near the same. If much lower at the raised idle it strongly suggests exhaust restriction.

Other on this Mopar. It may use a thermostatic "thingy" (nice definition Tom) on one exhaust manifold to shoot warm air under to help atomize fuel while cold then give up as engine warmed up. That was more on older stuff than this but trucks may have hung on to that a bit longer?? I plead IDK as for a while back when trucks were given longer to meet standards than passenger cars for a while and by the 90s had to meet all for sale to the US anyway.

Guessing as it's old and a truck but if it has one of those stuck (should be free in hand - cold check please) and stayed on they could clog the heck out of things with sludge unseen. Doubt you have that AND fuel injection. What else have you found checking? Plain guessing isn't the best approach even that long ago,

Rather leave things on the web. Two easy ways without tearing the thing apart to get a good clue on timing chains is 1. Take an actual manifold vacuum reading and should be near 18Hg on a "T" connector so item still gets vacuum. Another is to set timing mark at TDC, removed distributor cap and see how many degrees it turns before rotor inside distributor turns. Turn by crank bolt back and forth. IMO 5 degrees is enough of free-play. Short of seeing it with a scope and not sure you can you'd have to be looking at it. Not sure there's an easy inspection item to see it.

I drive older stuff and know what can happen with age and miles even on good American Iron the OE (original equipment) parts used a lot of plastic cam gears. Replacements would be all metal and last quite well.

At the age it could be a lot of diagnosing and perhaps some guessing if not owned since new ( or excellent history) it's one place where to start looking,
