I was getting the check engine light code P0032, which was due to one of these possible causes:

- Faulty Heated Oxygen Sensor (H2OS) Bank 1 Sensor 1
- Heated Oxygen Sensor (H2OS) Bank 1 Sensor 1 harness is open shorted to ground
- Heated Oxygen Sensor (H2OS) Bank 1 Sensor 1 circuit poor electrical connection
- Heated Oxygen Sensor (H2OS) Bank 1 Sensor 1 circuit fuse
- Faulty Engine Control Module (ECM)

Before I replaced the faulty O2 sensor, I disconnected the battery that way the computer could reset when I turned the car back on, with the new sensor in. Well I did this and when I turned the car on, no CEL, however, about 5 minutes on the road and I'm getting CEL again. This time the code read:

P2251

-Linear heated O2 sensor-bank 1, sensor 1 (HO2S11) reference ground circiut
Probable cause:

-Open or short circuit condition
- Poor electrical connection
- Failed HO2S11 (Bank 1 sensor 1)

It is worth noting I have driven the car about 100 miles and started it at least 30 times since replacing the O2 sensor.

That's an 0/2 heater code. You have to verify power and ground arriving at the sensor on the like colored wires. If you have both, then you have a bad sensor.

What brand and part number sensor did you put in it?

That last code you got basically means the computer thinks the reference ground circuit is open. It has nothing to do with the heater circuit. The only way to see how this sensor is functioning is with a high end scan tool. The engine controller sends small positive and negative amounts of current to the A/F sensor's pumping cell in attempts to balance the sensor. The amount of current that is used and its polarity is monitored by the PCM. This is how the PCM calculates the fuel/air mixture. The PCM converts the measurements it sees to a voltage value that is displayed on the scan tool. The voltage usually stays around 1.9-2.0 volts when the air fuel mixture is 14.7:1. If the voltage goes lower than 1.9-2.0 volts the engine is running rich, so the computer will take fuel away from the engine. If it goes higher than 1.9-2.0 volts it is running lean and the computer will add fuel to the engine.

The computer watches the voltage to make sure it goes around 3.2 volt or higher during decel when the injectors are turned off. This is because there is nothing, but a lot of O2 in the exhaust when the injectors are shut down. If the computer doesn't see the voltage go high or go beyond a certain threshold, it assumes the reference ground is open.

Inspect the O2 harness and connector on the harness end really good. Make sure you don't have any broken, damaged connector terminals or wiring.

I took it to a mechanic today and he measured the voltage(or something electrical) on the O2 sensor and said it was fine, although he said he wasn't an expert in electrical and that I should get a second opinion. That sensor could be a chinese knockoff. Never heard of the company (Replacement) that makes it.
Get yourself a dealer OEM, NTK, or Denso sensor.

Just think of it as a MAF sensor. That is how I remember how it works. MAF sensor electronics control the amount of current to the MAF hot wire. The amount of current used to keep the wire hot is then converted to a linear or digital signal that the engine computer uses to determine how much air is flowing into the engine.

My 1998 Kia sportage was bought brand new. Just this year things have been going wrong, fuel pump has been replaced also new starter. Now the gear shift won't shift unless I put the key in the slot next to the gear shift, radio stopped working and so did the heater.My milage is 098413/862 I am not sure of the motor size.
I am really desperate, I am living on Social Security which is a limited income.
I really need your help , what should I do. Oh no, now the check engine came on again. Auto zone says it's the oxygen sensors, are they hard to put in?

First thing, .... don't let AutoZone diagnose you problem. They are just parts clerks. If they read the codes, get the code number and post it here. As for your shift problems, that would be called the shift interlock feature. It operates on the same circuit as the brake lights so the first thing you want to do is to make sure the brake lights are working when this problem is present. If the brake lights are working, that proves the circuit is good up to that point, then you'll have to get to the solenoid in the console/column. Disassemble as much as you have to to access the solenoid near the shifting mechanism. Us a 12v test light to test for power coming and going at the solenoid when the brake is applied. If power is arriving and switching and the solenoid is not triggering, the solenoid is bad and will have to be replaced.

Had my car checked by a computer and it had 3 error codes . The one error code was for a low voltage circuit on the oxygen sensor. This sensor was replaced back in september when i had some exhaus work done. The other codes was for system too lean and cylinder 2 misfire. Sparkplugs and wires have been replaced. Anyone got any ideas?

Even though you have had these parts replaced doesn’t guarantee they are not at fault. Were the replacements parts original equipment or after market? After market is fine in most cases but there are times when the manufacture or the marketer of these parts will lump three or four part numbers together because their specification are close. With electronic engine controls close isn’t good enough, close could start a chain reaction leading to power loss and false codes being set.
Even original equipment parts can fail so make no assumptions.
An O2 sensor not reporting the actual amount of oxygen in the exhaust will cause the computer to adjust the air/fuel mixture until it sees what it thinks is the proper amount. Whether that be rich or lean the computer will try and drive the mixture in that direction and if it cannot it will set a code.
Now an excessively lean running engine may be the cause of the #2 misfire, not enough fuel to sustain combustion or the misfire could be the cause of the lean code being set.
Due to that lack of combustion (misfire) the oxygen along with the fuel is not being burnt and the computer thinks the engine is lean and in turn adds more fuel to the mix.
Kind of like the chicken or the egg argument.
Misfires can be caused by a number of different reasons, to many to mention here other then its not always the spark plugs.
I know this doesn’t answer why your car isn’t running properly, all I was try to say is that power loss issues and codes are not always a cut and dry repair. There are hundreds of reasons that can cause even one of the symptoms that you mentioned.
Take the car into someone that you feel is competent with the systems on the car and that doesn’t mean the cheapest guy in town nor does it necessarily mean the dealer.
