2004 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo 4.0 82,000 - Clicking noise from engine

Question From Dan54 on 2004 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo 4.0 82,000 - Clicking noise from engine

I have a 2004 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo 4.0 that I have owned for almost 3 years and it currently has about 82,000 miles on it. The problem I'm having is a clicking noise coming from somewhere in the engine. I can't pinpoint where the noise is coming from and I've asked some friends with some experience and they had no idea either. I noticed the noise shortly after I returned from my deployment in november and got a NY state inspection and they didnt say anything about it. It has gotten louder since then but its not exactly constant. Some times the clicking isnt present but once it starts it slowly speeds up while idling and eventually stops before starting up again. When it is in drive or Reverse it speeds up as I accelerate. The noise is present in every gear and this problem has been occuring for atleast 7 months. Since the noise has gotten louder I dont want to ignore it anymore. I had a check engine light come on about 5-6 months ago and it was an oxygen sensor which I replaced. I just replaced the spark plugs a week ago because it was long overdue. I have searched and searched but I cannot find an answer online so if you have any ideas of where I should begin please help me out.

Response From Loren Champlain Sr

Dan; First, Thankyou for your service. You Vets make me proud!
If it is a 'tinny' clicking noise, I would direct my attention to valve train. (rocker arms, lifters, ect). I'm sure you have already done so, but did changing oil and filter make any difference? Do you have plenty of oil pressure? You can buy a mechanic's stethescope (quite inexpensive) and try and pinpoint where the noise is coming from. Also, what weight oil are you using? I'll have to check, but I think it should be 5W20 or 5W30?
It is possible that you have a weak lifter that loses it's prime and takes a while for it to 'pump' up again, but too early to think that, yet.

Response From Dan54

It has been almost 2000 miles since my last oil change but I used 10W30 Royal purple and a pure one oil filter. I used 5W30 before that because Im stationed at Fort Drum and it gets very very cold here. The oil pressure is fine and I havent had any problems with it in the past either.

If it is a lifter, is that something I could fix myself or would that be an expensive shop fix?

Response From Loren Champlain Sr

http://contentinfo.autozone.com/znetcs/product-info/en/US/grn/27146/image/8/Once you have determined that it is a faulty lifter, replacing it (I recommend that you replace all of them) is no big deal. You'll need to buy one of these tools to get the old ones out. This one is from AutoZone, about $7.00. Easily, a one day job in the garage, and a couple of six packs of Corona. If you decide to do this yourself, probably best to buy a manual, but we can walk you through it, if need be. If you pull the valve cover, inspect all of the rocker arms for wear and make sure they are all tight. Inspect all of the push rods (both ends). Push rods, rocker arms, and lifters are all inexpensive, but there are 12 of each. Also, a valve cover gasket will be needed.
Oh, I'd recommend going back to the 5W30. The only 'purple' oil I'm familiar with was the Union 76 Purple Triton, back in the '60s? Used to call it grape juice.

Response From Dan54

When I was searching around I read about engine noises on youtube. I searched Lifter ticking and found a couple that sound just like mine. I have a haynes manual I can look at but Ive never gone this in depth into working on a vehicle.

Thank you very much for your help. I know I havent officially determined that a lifter is the cause but based on the sound should I just go ahead and replace them or go into a more in depth troubleshooting process?

Response From Loren Champlain Sr Top Rated Answer

Dan; I'd want to make darned sure that's what is making the noise. I'd try the stethescope, first. With the engine still warm, you can take the valve cover off, reconnect everything that you had to disconnect to get it off, and start it and visually check for rocker arm travel. It will make a real mess, of course, and will need to take precautions of oil getting on the hot exhaust manifold. You can actually press down on the rocker arms, individually, with a hammer handle, while the engine is idling, and maybe identify which one is clattering.
It really isn't a tough job. Just need to pay attention as to how it comes apart. No rocket science. Let me know if you decide to proceed and I'll give you some more info.

Response From DannyT

i have the same problem, 83,000 miles, but mine is intermitting,, 10 ticks then stops for 10 seconds ,, changed the oil today and it got louder, last week it would happen on cold starts, i turned off the motor, and restarted and it went away, now its back full time

Response From Hammer Time

This thread is a year old. You should start a new question if you need some help.

Response From ABoismenu

Not really sure if you've figured it out yet but i also have a 2004 jeep grand cherokee about 56000 miles is the noise really easy to her from righ under the driver side door. If so it's piston slap. Jeep being the amazing people they are installed different size pistons in different size bores. During cold operation (usually) mine does it when it's worm the piston is cold and smaller when it gets hotter the piston expands and fits the bore better. The dealer will not do anything for this because it is so comon. If you want to compare noise listen to videos where people put exhaust on there Grnd Cher the 4.0 engine is what i've heard INDESTRUCTIBLE and will never fail no matter what you do to it so i wouldnt worry too much about it. You think it's getting louder because now your listening for it went through the same thing just stopped listen for it and it hasn't really bothered me lately. Hope i helped. All the information is what i've gathered from some instructors from school and the a few techs at the jeep dealership i took my car for transmission work.

1996 Grand Cherokee Rough Idle and poor MPG

Question From ffemt5530 on 1996 Grand Cherokee Rough Idle and poor MPG

1996 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo 4.0 (160,500 miles)
-What I’ve replaced thus far-
STARTER (TWICE)
IGNITION COIL (TWICE)
BOTH OXYGEN SENSORS
CATALYTIC CONVERTER
MUFFLER AND TAIL PIPE
CRANKSHAFT POSITION SENSOR
CLEANED THROTTLE BODY
CLEANED IDLE AIR CONTROL VALVE
AIR FILTER
FUEL FILTER
RAN LUCAS THREW ENGINE SEVERAL TIMES
RAN OCTANE BOOST THROUGH ENGINE SEVERAL TIMES
SPARK PLUGS
WIRES
CAP
FUEL PUMP RELAY
STARTER RELAY
BATTERY
REPLACED TWO SCREWS ON PCM (READ THAT THIS REMEDY WORKED FOR SOME, BUT NOT FOR ME)
HAD JEEP CHECKED FOR VACUUM LEAK, NONE REPORTED
CHECKED PCV VALVE AND CLEANED IT (ALL LOOKED GOOD)
CHECKED MANIFOLD FOR LEAKS, NONE REPORTED
HAD FUEL PRESSURE CHECKED-REPORTED IN NORMAL RANGE

*HAD JEEP CHECKED BY FIVE DIFFERENT MECHANICS (ONE WAS EVEN THE DEALERSHIP) AND HAD IT HOOKED UP TO MANY DIFFERENT DIAGNOSTIC TESTING EQUIPMENT-ALL SAID THAT THERE WAS NOTHING WRONG WITH MY JEEP.

*At this time I have no check engine light.

*The issue is that my jeep will run great, but when I take it on long distance trips (1-2 hours) it starts to act up. The problem is that approximately an hour (usually) into the trip I will come to a stop light and have to stop and my jeep will idle at abnormal rpms (between 100 and 200). My jeep never stalls, however. When I give it gas the rpms increase just like normal, or if I shift it into neutral the rpms will shoot up to normal ranges as well. Also, I am experiencing terrible gas mileage and I can smell the exhaust inside of my car. Finally, I am experiencing somewhat hard shifting while at higher speeds and sometimes when I’m in a lower gear and the engine is working to downshift to maintain a certain speed at which I’m traveling. This has been a ten month annoyance of mine and all the mechanics I have been to at this point have failed. I am looking for the answer to my problem, but any help is appreciated. Thanks so much!

same problems but it does it right off,im about to pay a bum to drive into a local jeep dealers show room ,e
i have replaced all three sensors on the throtle intake, starter, batery, pcm, relays, fuses, cut the cat out put new one in,new o2 sensors, no wires crosed or out of place, replaced cap rotar, wires, plugs,

on subject off subject had to pull two relays nothing on at all but massive drain on battery, second i cut the cat out because of massive carbon build up, the night i cut it out replaced with welded pipe an o2 sensors it got 18 to 22 mpg home 30mile drive, next day went back to running like crap with new added problem you can be drive fine bad mpg and it sputers if you mash the gas does nothing but about stals out let of the gas goes back to okay idle then it goes back to almost stalling to very loud back fireing, with thick black carbon smoke cloud.

Response From ffemt5530

Also, would a bad chain cause me to have poor gas mileage?

Thanks

Response From Sidom

A loose timing chain could cause some of your problems & would definitely affect fuel economy. With your setup there is 2 ways to check it. One would be to put a breaker bar on the crank & move the crank back & forth while looking at the rotor in the dist, noting how long it takes to go from one direction to the other. There is no real spec for movement, it come down to experience. The 2nd which is a little more accurate is to hook up a lab scope to the cam & crank sensors & check the sync of the patterns while running, noting for movement while reving the engine. Any thing more than 10º out indicates something is going on.

From what you've said I would probably start off with making sure there in no exhaust leaks. You should never be getting exhaust gases into the cabin. Those have had problems with their exhaust manifolds & an exhaust leak would affect your gas mileage, it would lean out the exhaust gases making the comp compensate by adding more fuel. a look at the fuel trims would help confirm this.

As far as the low idle, I would be looking at the IAC pretty close. Those are a dual coil IAC and in the past I've had problems with one coil going bad & not setting a code, also since it is electrical, the failure was only happen when hot & under load.........

Response From ffemt5530

Thanks again for responding. I have checked for leaks in the exhaust manifold. I was told to spray some type of fluid (I used WD 40 and Throttle Body Cleaner) around the exhaust manifold while it was running. I found no leaks. Everything from the catalytic converter (including the cat) is brand new-just put on approximately one month ago. Just a note-the exhaust smell in my cabin only appeared whenever I was coming to a stop, and it was only a faint amount unless I opened the window. It is a smell of unburned gas because my engine is running either too lean or too rich. Would a faulty IAC give me poor gas mileage, and is changing a timing chain a simple task?

Thanks

Response From re-tired

A very high percentage of jeeps were indeed fixed with the pcm screws , Go back and try backing out those screws a couple of turns .If no change ,go to a salvage yard and get a pcm harness and swap it out. One other thing ,look down at front of eng in the opening in front of #1 exhaust tube and see if the harness is stuck to it.

Response From ffemt5530

The contents of your response is an entirely new concept to me as I have never heard of this or had this mentioned to me by any of the mechanics I've been to. That being said, could you be gracious enough to tell me what that is, where it's located, and how I would go about checking to see if what you have recommended is bad?

I have read A LOT of different forums relating to my problem and all of them indicate that it could be a bad EGR, IAC, Map Sensor, or Throttle Position Sensor. I am just wondering if you are dismissing any of those as the answer to my problem.

Sorry if I sound like I'm prying, it's just that I have been spending a lot of time and money on trying to fix this problem and I'm fed up. I'm really placing a lot of hope in this particular forum to end my many months of anger and frustration.

Thanks again!

Response From Tom Greenleaf Top Rated Answer

I think this engine uses a timing chain. They can be erratic and fool techs.

Check for lash in that chain. 160K is enough even for real chains vs known maint for the rubber ones,
