There are 2 O2 sensors...

One is in the exhaust manifold ,rear of the engine, in manifold by firewall.

The other one is in the exhaust behind the catalytic converter.

Hey Guest. Please post the exact code number that was read to make them tell you the O2 sensor is bad. A lot of times the O2 is good ans something else causes the problem. Here is a partial list of O2 codes. This does not include manufacturers codes. You can see why we need the specific code. The last 4 are not for O2's, but a lot of parts houses wilol sell the sensor to try to clear the code. Remember, the parts person is probably NOT a technician/mechanic.

ok i finally got time to go to Autoparts again and they printed out the codes i have P0135; and i bought a Premium Oxygen Sensor; is that the same as the Sensor Heater Circuit Malfunction; and the guy told me i would have to go to Chevy to find out what is wrong with the P1404 Manfacurer control is that true????if you could could you help me find the Sensor heater Circuit i tried and i couldn't find it and i couldn't find anything online that would help me find it. thanks

P1404 is an EGR code

Possibilities are faulty EGR valve, PCM, wiring/connections..


The oxygen sensor itself its the "heated oxygen sensor"....

If you have an EGR code, that can cause an O2 code due to the wrong mixture of fuel and air going into the engine. If the mixture is wrong going in, it has to be wrong coming out and the O2 sensor can pick up on that. Your code is for the O2 sensor heater. That usually is the sensor itself. On the EGR code, have the EGR removed and check to see if carbon is on the pintle holding the valve from operating.

General info as I personally never equipped myself with special tools or info for full service on these cars. A couple local shops only worked on them if more than totally routine maintenance.
Just like you could have found on part look up where it thinks (says) it's located as said below. Some things to check are the wire(s) to it and if routing is touching anything rubbing thru or if wire into it has rusted off how clamped on. There will be a plug to check as well.
If you remove it to just look at the thing for debris, color high chance you'll break it or the manifold or pipe so watch out for that. I'm not alone but in a rust belt area and these cars are actually WORSE than average for dumb stuff so much as removing parts to check/replace an air filter can get in trouble with steel studs into alloy parts w 10mm nuts snap right off flush - a problem.
I'm not sure if a code trying tell you bad ground means too much or too little. Check grounds all over a car this old anyway even likely that exhaust system is grounded to body with a strap or two?
Can find parts on line as needed but totally suggest only real OE parts (clones are everywhere) as dealer parts can be insanely expensive but available.
Side note: an '87 300E was here, not mine to deal with in total but check out several things for what was a clean looking car junked because of a broken windshield so rusted unseen under molding was beyond possible repair vs value as parts - bummer,

So even with this pre OBDII it can and will throw codes or a check engine icon. Doesn't mean the item it points to still but rather that circuit.

Could I try spraying some PB on it? I wasn't sure if that would damage the new sensor once its installed.

You can try whatever is at your disposal. Heat will, sometimes, work. But, gotta be real careful using it. Once you do get the sensor out, you can clean the threads in the exhaust pipe with a spark plug tap. (14mm, I think) Should be able to get one at most any parts store. Be sure to use anti-sieze on the threads of the new sensor before installing it.

Yeah, it took heat, a lot of heat! ha. I just re-taped it out and got the new one in with some anti-seize and all is well, thanks.

I don't think I've ever seen anything as seized or corroded as that sensor was.
