1995 Ford Ranger 4 cylinder

Question From Guest on 1995 Ford Ranger 4 cylinder

Car "check engine" light constantly on - even after replacing two oxygen sensors that was recommended after a diagnostic check by mechanic.
engine light comes on and stays on after 30 or 40 miles of driving. Two sensors were purchased from Ford Motor Company. I cleared the check engine light 3 or 4 times with a diagnostic code reader, but it returns. What could be the problem?

Response From Loren Champlain Sr

mad dog 2010; I can remember that stuff. MD20/20. Younger days. LOL.
What trouble codes are you getting? Any drivability concerns?

Response From Guest Top Rated Answer

The only codes that keep coming up on the diagnostic tester is "front oxygen sensor". I replaced the oxygen sensors with 2 Ford oxygen sensors. I do not have any drivability concerns. The truck drives great.

Response From Loren Champlain Sr

Again, what codes? Lean, rich? Could be a circuit issue as well. All the codes are telling you is that there is a problem in that particular area. Not that the part itself is faulty.

Question From getrdun33 on 98 Ford Expedition

i have a 1998 ford expedition xlt 4.6L V8, i was wondering how many Oxygen sensors I have?
I need to know so I can go get them replaced.
Thanks

Response From Hammer Time

Why would you be replacing all your oxygen sensors?

Response From way2old Top Rated Answer

As a guess, I bet it is codes P0171 and P0174. AZ read the codes and said the O2's were bad.

Response From Tom Greenleaf

Comment: Here the wires can rust right out of them. Have found wires just hanging - GM truck and just repacled them all but suggest OE ones still. Pre converter ones will send wrong signals and vehile will be brain dead and not run well if at all. Don't wait as a poor running engine for any reason will kill comverters adding to the expense!

Oxygen sensor replacement?

Question From Willybill on Oxygen sensor replacement?

1990, GMC, K1500, 4.3L, 151,000 miles. The oxygen sensor is in the tail of the crossover pipe. When I went to change it the sensor was broke off at the above the nut. I let the truck run to heat up the pipe and I couldn't move the sensor. I then heated the thread area and got it good and red hot still it wouldn't turn. I did this two or three more times until the nipple started to break out of the pipe. The thing I would like to know can I get another nipple to weld in or do I have to get a new crossover pipe? If I take the nipple out I don't think it will be possible to get the sensor out.

Response From Hammer Time

Once they are corroded in like that, they get fused to the pipe and then there is no saving it. I'm afraid replacing the pipe is going to be the only savior now. Be sure to put anti seize on the sensor threads to avoid this happening again.

Response From Tom Greenleaf

Generous Motors at its best! We had the audacity to bail them out with borrowed money at that!

T

Response From Hammer Time

Don't blame GM. It happens to all of them. The combination of corrosion and heat just welds the 2 parts together.

Response From chickenhouse

Last I heard, I think they said the lunar rover should still be operable. May have to call in AAA to get it hauled in 4 repair but it's supposed to run- still. I have been pro G M products since the 60's, when it still belonged to G M, and they had design, every year. Not the cookie cutter cars they evolved into. I went to the tech center for many classes, very good training, hands on with newest cars. These days my yard has a diversified collection, albeit still mostly G M, I do/have had many Fords & Chrysler products. Some of the best Fords IMO are still the Model A's. Had many, want another. Basic car- points, condensor, one of the first to employ ignition systems that lasted decades. And how old are YOU??

Response From Tom Greenleaf

USA put a man on the moon in 1969 and can't deal with an o2 sensor! Right. GM designed the lunar landing module the was wire mesh wheeled and it's four wheel drive failed! Nice flicking company! 100 bazillion bucks to do that and their equipment fails!

No sympathy for GM from me!

T

Response From Loren Champlain Sr

CH; I can't tell you how old Tom G is, but he was involved in the think tank inventing dirt.

Response From chickenhouse

Thinking about it, if T was on the panel to invent dirt, was he standing on water then?

Response From Loren Champlain Sr

Ouch. Not sure you meant it the way it sounded?

Response From chickenhouse

There should be no "ouch" to it, all meant in good humor.

Response From Hammer Time

And Ford and Chrysler have never done anything wrong?

Response From Tom Greenleaf Top Rated Answer

Hammer and LOL,

">And Ford and Chrysler have never done anything wrong?<"

Of course not! First car was a Mopar in fact,

Tom

Response From Tom Greenleaf

CH "How old are you"

Old enough not to say!

T

Response From Loren Champlain Sr

Agree. Especially if the joker before you didn't use anti-sieze. I've been pretty sucessful using a 3/8 impact. Not strong enough to break it, but the hammering (no pun intended) effect usually works.

2000 Ford Windstar banks running lean

Showing 2 out of 6 Posts | Show 4 Hidden Posts
Question From lilolilarry on 2000 Ford Windstar banks running lean

I have 2000 Ford Windstar with a 135k on it. The engine light has been coming on periodically. When we put a scanner on it it shows that both banks are running lean. I have replaced three oxygen sensors and the temperature sensor. There does not seem to be any head gasket leaks. After each of these fixes we reset so the engine light goes off. However, the light will come back on within usually a week. There seems to be no rhyme or reason as to when the light comes back on. Can anyone help me figure out what is going on?

Response From tvaughn

I experience this. Fuel lean on both banks should be problem common to both rails. Fuel pump or fuel filter.
I lucked out, replacing the fuel filter fixed the problem.

Response From Sidom

There is a lot a good advise on things to check. You really do need make sure there are no vacuum or exhaust leaks 1st. Along with the intakes, those are good for bad PCV valve hoses at the manifold........

Scan data would be very helpful for this problem to help zero in on what system is causing the lean codes. As you see here there all the things mentioned to check, and ALL those systems can cause the lean codes. You really need to look at some fuel trims to help narrow the field a bit...............

Response From steve01832

The first place to look is fuel pressure. You will need to hook a guage up to the test port and check it key on engine off, then engine running. Post back with the fuel pressure recorded from the test and we will go further.

Steve

Bad oxygen sensor, or vaccum leak

Response From way2old

These engines are famous for intake gaskets leaking. Look at the O2 sensors to see what they are actually doing. Also look at the MAF sensor to be sure it is reading correctly.

1992 Ford Ranger 2.3 4 cyl. check engine light on

Question From fmitchelltx on 1992 Ford Ranger 2.3 4 cyl. check engine light on

I have a 1992 Ford Ranger 2.3 4 cyl. The check engine light is on. The truck has been sitting up broken for about 8 months. My stepson just replaced the bad cylinder head yesterday. This old truck is back on the road now. The check engine light comes on after about 2 - 3 seconds and stays on. I think I remember it being on prior to sitting up for all the time. A few years ago I had the cat con replaced. I am thinking that I probably need to get a new Oxygen Sensor to fix my problem. The truck has an expired state inspection sticker. They will automatically fail the truck if the check engine light is on. I called the local AutoZone and O' Reilly stores but they can't check codes on a vehicle that old. Would I be correct it replacing the Oxygen Sensor and hope that fixes the problem?

Thanks!

Response From Discretesignals

You need to start off by getting hold of an EEC IV code reader and find out what code(s) is being stored in the engine computer.

And what are you using to come to that conclusion............... your crystal ball?
