Question From chevyguy78 on engine swap 305 to 400 small block

I'm swapping my 305 engine out for a 400 sbc in my 78 camaro. Will the stock exhaust manifolds from the 305 fit my 400 until i can get some headers? Also I want to put a bigger cam in it any suggestions and what lifters i will need and does anyone have the sequence to adjust the valves on the 400?

Felpro / Exhaust Manifold Gasket

I'm almost certain the exhaust manifolds will fit right on. Above shows the same gasket part # for both was the best I could find. There are lots of parts the same and lots are different in SB Chevs. What year and model was the 400 used in?

Response From chevyguy78

The 400 came out of a 72 chevy caprice. The guy says he had the engine rebuilt and has new high ov pump, all new barrings, rings and timing chain and gears. What is an ov pump? I just assumed it was an oil pump.

Response From Tom Greenleaf Top Rated Answer

I'm guessing - sorry - but I think that refers to "high output volume" for the oil pump. I'm void of paper books for that year to even recite (no scanner here) the sequences and specs for the engine. Things like that were well covered in the Chilton's Service Professional Editions that used to cover 8 model years back from the year on the cover for all "American Cars" and did cover just the VW for foriegn. We'd get lost back when if someone showed up with a two stroke 3 cyl SAAB or something!

The engine was confused. To even recently many people will call it a big block and it isn't. I only recall a couple of them at all and only did routine service to I think a 72 Caprice as you mentioned. Funny, but that car was ordered new for a lady in her 70s by her motor head sons and it came thru with the engine size on the fenders. One side said 400 and the other 454?? I can just see the assembly line workers of the day saying "that's the big engine" and the confusion continues
