Oil Pump problems...

Question From domfast2003 on Oil Pump problems...

So im buying a 1986 Pontiac Fiero and the oil pump is bad. Car was being driven at the time when it went out. The guy said that the car just shut off while going down the highway. Is there a sensor or something to shut the engine off or could the engine be blown? Its a V6...

Response From Tom Greenleaf

Will it even turn by hand - or by socket on crankshaft bolt?

T

Response From domfast2003

He said its able to turn over but im worried it may have gotten really hot. I have never had a oil pump go bad so im not sure.

Response From Tom Greenleaf

I really don't know if this car used a low oil pressure shut down. If so my guess is either fuel pump wouldn't work or spark defeated.

The issue is for the situation right now is WHO is taking responsibility for testing this engine? Just trying stuff could make it worse and if you can't get an pump failure verified and the possible/likely damage assessed then value the car as if it needs everything and decide from there,

T

Response From domfast2003

Well all i know is he said he was driving down the highway when the oil pressure began to go up and down. He took it out of gear and rolled to a stop where it then died. He was told it was the oil pump so we are placing a new one in it now to see if it will run. But if it was the pump could it have ruined the engine?

Response From Tom Greenleaf Top Rated Answer

You should diagnose why it doesn't start first if at all possible. It either lack fuel or spark. It most certainly could be junk if oil pressure zeroed out for any reason. Can't say right now. With some care - you could try to artifically pump up oil pressure, take compression readings and more before dumping $$ into a possible lost cause,

95 Transport engine knock - Oil pump or worse?

Showing 2 out of 2 Posts
Question From Tomtina3 on 95 Transport engine knock - Oil pump or worse?

1995 Pontiac Transport 3.8L, 195k mi., Oil pressure gauge reads normal when cold, goes down to almost zero as it warms up. Engine runs smooth when cold, but knocks like hell when it heats up, especially under torque. Leaks oil dripping fairly fast when cold (but not once it warms up) around the crankshaft. so.... mechanic thinks the engine is shot, thinks oil is leaking internally, engine bearings etc, and thats why the oil pressure is low. Could it be the oil pump? rebuild is about $250, pump is internal (in engine, not in the oil pan). How can you test whether its the oil pump, or if the engine is shot? i hate to put another $2-300 if its not the problem, and mechanic is skeptical. Any advice?

Also, would a thicker oil buy me some time? What viscosity?? Thanks!

With the description given it sounds like this engine is shot. A new high output oil pump might help but if you have noticed this and driven this with the noise the damage to bearings is done. The leak could be the rear main not beieng able to keep up with the crank out of spec now and could behave when it warms up or that internal bearing leak so much there isn't enough to leak there.

Hard to condem it without really being there but I think you could limp this along a while with like the super thick STP type things/additive which thickens the oil. If cold where you are it can be too much to start up first time of the day though,

Holden Omega help charging system

Question From Danfornat on Holden Omega help charging system

Hi I purchased a used holden commodore VE omega 2008/auto in January 2012 with 80,000km on the clock. 10,000km later on the 7/3/12 the vehicle was towed to Goldy Motors - Holden due to I drove 3 metres and the vehicle stalled, failed to start, displaying fault codes abs airbag ect and power saver/safe mode was activated. I specifically requested to have the charging system and all components checked and was told the charging system is functioning properly. They then stated they checked the battery and found the battery was not holding charge and replaced the battery. It was also discovered that the transmission was leaking from the oil pump seal which then revealed that the transmission oil pump was scored and had chatter marks. They consulted a transmission repair specialist and recommended pump replacement and then carried out the repairs. For a total cost of 2874. Today the 26th of January the vehicle would not start, displaying abs and airbag fault. Checked battery and has a voltage of 8.45 which makes me think alternator since I drive the vehicle regularly and always serviced on time at certified repairers. What should I do at this stage?

Response From Tom Greenleaf

Have to be very general as the car is not sold where most regulars are at this site. No matter you believe the low voltage which would be too low for it to function properly. If not starting the warning light are just in bulb check mode IMO.

Alternator needs a good battery and all wiring proper. Batteries can fail new or not and be hard on alternators or kill them.

Try charging the battery with a charger, check that belt is tight to alternator and recheck voltage when running as it should after doing that much. If not decide on what you want to do. It may now need to go back for full charging system and battery check,

Thanks for your reply,I realised that this site wasn't local after I looked around a bit. My bad, although I am referring to the "Pontiac G8". I have charged the battery and about to go and see how it goes. Either way she's going to go to the mechanics

Response From Tom Greenleaf

All are welcome. It's just difficult up to impossible for regulars to get specific. You mentioned low voltage which is enough if it was a garden tractor/lawn mower to know to check battery and charging system.

Good luck. No site beat being there hands on - yet,

Pontiac sunfire knock during accelartion

Question From jarret83 on Pontiac sunfire knock during accelartion

1995
pontiac
sufire
2.2l (from a 94 cavalier)
about 130k

so me and my grandpa have had a trip with this car. i got it for gas mileage but the original motor was locked up. so we bought a 1994 cavalier and pulled the motor from it. (the sunfire had a nicer body and interior). so for about 3 months i learned alot about changing motors and cuss words haha any way, we used the the cavalier engine and transmission.

after about the first month of driving it, it started knocking to a terrible extent. So we changed the front left cv axle with one from the cavalier(we saved most parts) so that care of it a little so the mext weekend we changed the other one. the knocking is still there. how ever, my grandpa did put 15w 40 oil in and generic spark plugs because it was all free. i have no idea what else could cause it to knock. it only knocks when im accelrating ex: passing someone on the highway, or speeding up in town. but it doesnt knock when im in park or in neutral. only when im in gear. any help would be greatly appreciated, im beginning to stress over this problem, thank you!!!

Response From Hammer Time

and generic spark plugs because it was all free

What is a "generic" spark plug?

Response From jarret83

I should've explained it, like he got them from work for free, he didn't check if they were made for my engine

Response From Hammer Time

WHOOOOO................... big problem. Get them out right away and get the correct Delco plugs and hope they haven't already damaged a piston.

Response From jarret83

That's what I was trying to tell him! Haha but he's my grandpa so ya know, can't argue much

Response From Tom Greenleaf

Spring for the right plugs as just said. No telling what else might be causing "knock" till those unknowns are out. Once warmed up the heavy oil probably isn't the up front issue but that should go too,

"Grandpa, tell me about the good ole days...the day we blew up the engine with the wrong plugs in the drive wayyyyy...Grandpa, my car is making a knocking noise...it sounds like a piston is about to deploy.. Grandpaaaaa tell me about the good oleee dayssssss....

Response From jarret83

Haha I should've added tht my check oil light is on as well

Response From Hammer Time

You gotta be kidding. You forgot to mention that you were driving it with the oil light on?

You need to go back to your bicycle.

Response From jarret83

I'm here for help not for ridicule sir, it just slipped my mind, I've checked the oil and its at operating range

Response From Hammer Time

The omission in your question was your minor screw up. Driving a car with the oil light on is just plain stupid. That is not an oil level light. It's an oil pressure light. Compare oil pressure to your own heartbeat. You can't live without it and neither can your engine. That light is red for a reason. It means immediately stop.

Response From jarret83

Mine isn't red? It says check oil and is orange sometimes it will appear other times will not

Response From Hammer Time

And you're sure it is wrong?

Response From jarret83

Sure what is wrong?

Response From Hammer Time

The light says the car needs oil and you say it does not. Are you sure the light is malfunctioning?

Response From Tom Greenleaf

Don't trust those light that mean "check oil" usually amber. I've purposely done oil changes with a quart low and they didn't' work till it was TOO low or not at all!

If (probably) this uses some oil know how many miles and check it by dipstick often AND have the oil with you. The icon (it this uses that) of an oil can means your next ride will be in a tow truck. Shut down at once if that is seen! Oil to an engine is NOT a game!

Response From jarret83

this is just a thought but could i possibly have a broken/ incorrectly installed motor mount putting to much stress on the left side cv axle?? i'll attach of photo of how the enginge sits https://mail.google.com/mail/u/0/?ui=2&ik=61b8728617&view=att&th=13d41d99d9b02a0c&attid=0.1&disp=thd&zw notice how it leans down toward the left wheel, is this normal??? thank you

Response From Hammer Time

There is no picture there.

Does this noise only occur when the car is moving?

Response From jarret83

yes it only does it when i moveC:\Users\Leah\Desktop\photo.JPG

Response From Hammer Time

Yes, it could be the axles hitting something.

Your pictures are not coming out. You have to upload them to a photo hosting site like Photobucket and they will supply a link to post here that will make the picture appear.

Response From jarret83

i think i got it now lol

Response From Hammer Time

That motor definitely fell down. You need to have the motor mounts checked and find out what is hitting.

Response From jarret83

thats what i thought! i think the bracket on the transmisson connecting it to a mount is making it fall like that hitting the axle

Response From speed Top Rated Answer

15w40 is pretty heavy oil especially for such a small motor, try an oil change with 5w30 or 10w30 and inspect the oil you drain for metal shavings, i suspect whats happening is in park or neutral theres significantly less load on the engine ut when your accelerating theres enough load that the oil pump cannot pump the oil where it needs to be because kt is so thick, you may have already done enough damage that changing the oil wont fix it as well.

Response From jarret83

even if i have done damage thank you so much for the help/ reply!!! it is extremely appreciated if this fixes i will reply back again. thanks again!!

Oil Pressure Gauge

Question From 43car on Oil Pressure Gauge

My girlfriend's 2002 Pontiac Bonnevilles oil pressure gauge is stuck. It always reads like there is a high pressure problem. Would this be caused by the sensor/sending unit and if so where is it located and is it hard to change?

Response From Tom Greenleaf

Sending units are usually near oil filter but if gauge is stuck that won't fix it. Unplug it and see if the gauge reacts, T

Response From 43car

My girlfriend informed me that the gauge does go to zero when the key is off. Do you think I still need to unplug the sensor?

Response From Tom Greenleaf Top Rated Answer

Guess here: Try a new sender. A thin wrench open end should get it out -- check for leaks with new one if you try that.

In general engines are regulated by a spring that doesn't allow real overpressure of oil and will bypass oil filter and get oil to the most important bearings in engine first.

Never saw one fail to too much pressure?? Oil pressure can be checked by a gauge put in where the sender goes.

All problems in my career where low oil pressure usually caused by a worn engine or once a bad oil pump.

I would check this out as too much pressure about surely would cause problems, T

Response From 43car

Thanks , I'll check it out today.
