Question From Guest on oil pressure switch location

can someone please tell me where i can locate the oil pressure switch on a 1986 chevy caprice 305 4 barrel.

Response From way2old

It is screwed into the engine just to the inside of the distributor. It may be on an adapter and screwed at a 90 degree angle to the distributor.

Response From Tom Greenleaf Top Rated Answer

Most cars would put sender switches near the oil filter. I think this one is behind carb and looks like a real small spark plug with just one wire to it. some required a special socket but I don't think that one did.

One trick is to just look at a new one and the old one should look the same, T

Question From Rich2006 on Oil pressure switch

I have a fuel pump that does not work. It is on a 2000 S-10, 2.2 liter, automatic transmission. There is no power coming through the fuel pump relay. The fuses are not blown. Someone said the oil pump switch might be shutting of the fuel pump. Can anyone tell me where the switch is located?

Thanks

Rich

Response From DanD

Who ever told you that the oil pressure switch maybe shutting off the fuel pump is 100% wrong. The oil pressure switch is designed and wired into the circuit in parallel with the fuel pump relay to be a back up means of turning the fuel pump on if the fuel pump relay has failed.
For example; on a system that is functioning properly you could unplug the fuel pump relay, crank the engine with the starter motor to build oil pressure. Once there is enough oil pressure the switch will close and supply power to the fuel pump.
I don’t know what’s wrong with your truck without a lot more information and test results from you.
Dan.

Response From Tom Greenleaf

There was a car that shut down with certain problems. It was a 1970 Chevy Vega and drove me nuts to figure out. Forgive me - that was 30 years ago or more!! T

Response From DanD

Like you said Tom the Vega’s and Astra’s were wired that way to shut the pump off when the engine lost oil pressure. That was also well before computer controls like what this S10 has.
Dan

Response From Tom Greenleaf

Hey - we aren't supposed to old enough to remember some of that stuff. We have way2old aboard for this stuff.

If you remember the Vega it had a state of the art silicone impregnated aluminum which lasted for about two tanks of gas! Memories, T

Sorry! to way2old, We love you here you know that, Tom

Response From Rich2006

I bought a "Haynes" manual for the S-10 and it says that a faulty oil pressure switch can shut down the fuel pump. I am going to run diagnostics and see if I get any codes.

Thanks

Rich

Should engine run with fuel pump relay disconnected

Showing 2 out of 2 Posts
Question From shads on Should engine run with fuel pump relay disconnected

I have been told that if I disconnect the fuel pump relay on the firewall of my '93 chevy 5.7l the engine should stay running. If it stops running the oil pressure switch is faulty. Is this true? What does the oil pressure switch have to do with the fuel pump relay?

Response From steve01832 Top Rated Answer

The oil pressure switch is a backup circuit. It tells the PCM oil pressure and when it gets to a predetermined pressure, the PCM closes the fuel pump circuit. This is usually done however thru the fuel pump relay. So if you pull the relay out, the pump circuit should not work.

Question From justin on 1997 Chevy 4x4

I was driving down the road and truck stoped running would not start. I found the ecm b fuse was blown and replaced and blew again. Replaced fuel filter truck started drove about 1 mile and stoped again. what could the problem be

Response From DanD

The ECM B fuse is part of the fuel pump circuit. The power in this circuit leaves the fuse panel in an orange wire going to the ECM, fuel pump relay and the oil pressure switch. Any one of which may have a short to ground in. The power on this orange wire leaves the relay and oil pressure switch in a gray wire going to the fuel pump; again a short to ground on this gray wire will also cause the ECM B fuse to blow.
Kind of a search and rescue type of repair and a process of elimination to find out who is the culprit. Check along the frame rail and the top of the fuel tank to see if this gray wire isn’t shafted bare and touching ground?
A couple of easy things you can try are; one, disconnect the fuel pump relay, replace the blown fuse. Crank the engine long enough for the engine to build oil pressure and that will turn on the fuel pump. If the fuse holds replace the relay.
Two: unplug the oil pressure switch and run the engine if the fuse holds replace the oil pressure switch.
I’ve had a few pressure switches short but it’s a long shot if this is the problem.

Dan. DAN, I REPLACED MY FUEL PUMP AND ALSO MY OIL PRESSURE SWITCH MY TRUCK STARTED SEVERAL TIMES SO I OLEFT THE HOUSE TO GO GET GAS AND IT WOULD NOT START THEN I MESSED WITH IT FOR A WHILE AND NOTHING SO THEN A COP CAME BY AND JUMPED IT AND NOTHING THEN AS I WAS DOWN THE STREET MY WIFE STARTED THE TRUCK ON THE FIRST TRY THEN I GOT HOME SHUT THE TRUCK OFF THEN STATED IT TWICE THEN WENT IN ATE DINNER THEN CAME BACK OUT IT WOULD NOT START AGAIN I AM NO LONGER BLOWING FUSES BUT I AM AT A LOSS NOW DO YOU HAVE AQNY OTHER IDEAS FOR ME THANKS JUSTIN

Response From DanD

Start back at the basics; the next time the truck isn’t starting test for spark at the coil and at the spark plugs.
Can you hear whether the fuel pump is running or not? During its prime cycle, during cranking or for a couple of seconds after the engine has been cranked? If so you may need to have it tested for pressure; teeing in a pressure gauge during one of its no start times.
You may have fixed the original short causing the fuse to blow, but inadvertently caused an intermittent bad connection or installed a defective pump?
Dan.

Response From Tom Greenleaf

Dan mentioned a biggie here. "DEFECTIVE NEW PARTS" It happens way too much and a major cause of hair loss!!!! It's worth checking out again and we all get confident in a new part but it isn't always so, T

Response From Tom Greenleaf

Do you have a "check engine" or code going on? That might help with this, T
