3 or 4 hours + $80 for updated gasket.
I recommend getting the ford updated pan gasket

I have a 1998 Mercury Mystique. It has a 4 cyl 2.0 engine. The timing belt went out on it. I got the hanes manual and started the repair process. I have done numerous timing chains and belts with great success. My problem is that it calls for the crank shaft pully second mark to line up with the mark on the oil pan. When I do this, #1 piston is at BDC. It needs to be at TDC. There is also a timing hole blanking plug. It says to get the crank shaft positioned and then remove the plug and install the locking pin so that the crank shaft does not move. Why???? I am able to remove the crank shaft pully bolt with an impact wrench without it moving. I have tired installing the belt with the #1 piston at TDC and the cams lined as the book says. The car runs this way, but does not have the proper power. I tried moving the #1 piston to just before TDC. This gave me good low end power but no top end. I then tried the way the hanes manual said. The car will not start at all. Any ideas will be greatly appreciated.

This is a VCT engine and you cannot time it without the locking tools. Those are your only reference points so the VCT adjusters can be centered.

So, how do I get the mark on the crankshaft pulleyu to match the oil pan mark and still have #1 piston at TDC???

As the instructions state, you use the crankshaft stop bolt. There are no marks on the cam pulleys so it can't be done without the tools.

The OTC timing tool kit for your engine is actually only about $37. I have the same engine in my girl's car and bought that toolkit. Any engine with VVT like yours uses tools like this instead of the timing marks of the older non-VVT engines. Wonderful technology, huh? If you go to the OTC tool website you can find the tool number and most parts stores should be able to get their hands on it for you.

Alright my oil pan recently cracked and leaked all the oil out of the pan while i was driving down the road. i noticed a small clunking noise in the engine and pulled over within a half mile. now she makes that noise all the time, but still runs.
I have all the repair manuals and tools i just need to know what to look at first as far as diagnostics.
any ideas about what could have happened?
is it salvageable?

There really isn't anything to diagnose here. The engine is severely damaged and needs to be rebuilt or replaced. I suggest replacing it with a remanufactured long block. Don't attempt rebuilding it yourself. that takes years of experience to do correctly.

What are the potential dangers of overfilling an automatic transmission to the point where the was a fluid ron off?
I recently Purchased a 2005 Mercury Mariner for my daughter. I am not a big fan of automatic transmissions so I felt I should purchase the drive train warranty to be safe. In order for the vehicle to be eligible for the warranty, I had to drop an extra grand to have service performed to bring it up to their standards. Part of that service included "Servicing the transmission". I'm not sure what all this entailed, but I do know they changed the tranny fluid. When I got the vehicle home I noticed some new drips on my driveway. I then crawled under the vehicle and saw that a large portion of the undercarriage was wet with fluid. At first I thought it was the oil pan gasket leaking as they had changed that as well, and there was a fresh droplet on the oil pan. However, after taking it back to the dealer, I was told that they had determined that the mechanic had overfilled the tranny by a quart, and the leak was actually transmission fluid. They indicated they had removed the excess fluid and will be replacing the transmission fluid tube and dipstick. So now my concern is; if there was enough pressure to blow the seal on the that tube, what is the real potential that the overfilling has also compromised the integrity of the seals or caused other problems? In researching this on the web I have seen many say that there is potential for seal blow outs.
The vehicle wasn't driven too much during the period after the transmission service. I would say less than 200 miles, mostly highway.
Any insight is appreciated.

Overfilling the transmission with ATF can cause the ATF to become foamy. This happens because the fluid level is high enough for the rotating components in the transmission to churn the fluid with air. The air trapped in the fluid causes the pump to cavitate resulting is hydraulic and lubrication problems.
If there are no problems now, be sure to have them notate on the repair order that the transmission was overfilled by them and any damage to the transmission from overfilling is unknown at this time. That way if you have problems down the road due to the overfilling, you have proof.

It is the 4WD model. I also saw on a YouTube video, that if the transmission leaks more after driving as opposed to leaking when sitting, it is like to be the torque converter seal that is failing, rather than the pump cover seal. Does that sound correct?
I will certainly ask the dealer to make the notation you recommended, but I'm sure they will be opposed to doing that as it leaves them open for further liability even though they may have caused more problems that they resolved.
