Question From cschofner on how do i change my oil pan gasket /??

I'm wondering if anyone could give me some advise on changing the oil pan gasket in my 98 ford ranger xlt 3.0 v6.

Response From way2old Top Rated Answer

Click here for instructions on the oil pan removal and installation for a 4 wheel drive. You forgot to say if it is 4 wheel drive or 2 wheel drive. If it is 2 wheel drive click on this page. Good luck with it.

Oil Pan Gasket: R&I

Question From ratrace2 on Oil Pan Gasket: R&I

I need to replace my leaky oil pan gasket without removing the motor???

1998 (2Wd) Chevy S-10 pickup truck (LS), 2.2L (LN2), automatic (M30).

Anybody got a trick up their sleeve????

Response From nickwarner

unbolt the motor and if needed, trans mounts. Use a jack and block of wood to raise engine , taking care not to get too crazy with how high you take it. Don't want to do any damage to other things. Should give you the room to get that pan off

Response From ratrace2

That's what I was thinking. BUT.....if I can't get it out and the gasket gets torn I'm going to be *&@#$&*^@#$&^#@

Response From Sidom

On that one the engine has to come out.

If you've already dropped the pan and are "into it" what you can do would be to remove the old gasket and clean the areas the best you can, then carefully snake the new gasket around the oil pick up and fit into place and try to get some grey silicone on the corners. The lip in the pan will hold the gasket..... This really isn't the best way to do it just for the fact you aren't removing the pan and can't do a good job cleaning and inspecting but will get you out of a pinch.....

You also want to inspect the back corners of the intake manifold, those are real common for leaking........

Response From ratrace2

Grey Silicon???

I got some RTV from the zone and thought I would dope up the corners of the back.

I'm not sure if RTV is the best for that, now that I think about it.......got a better idea....

Brand, specification of a sealer???? where to buy etc......?

Also, I got a new Valve cover gasket. It's leaking oil too......I just hate oil puddles and leaky engines.

Response From Tom Greenleaf

Not sure the color matters. I use Permatex "Gasket Maker + Sealer" tube happens to be black but product is grey inside. It's not the same RTV "Adhesive Sealant" so you have to read what you are getting. The name RTV seems to get used for all of them - they are for different purposes. Looks like this....

Got it.........Ultra grey, Sensor safe....Permatex...
Thanks a bunch guys.............

Response From Sidom

That's exactly the stuff I was thinking about Tom.

Like RT said stay away from the cheap stuff. I've had the best luck with that grey and stick with and now I don't have to try find a pic of it to post....

Thx Tom

Response From re-tired

Permatex ultra copper gasket maker is a brand i've ha good results with . Stay away from cheap blue stuff. One thing that some people dont think about is that it must be "sensor safe" . The vapors given off the cheap stuff can affect some computer sensors.

Response From nickwarner Top Rated Answer

well if you're pulling the pan because of a leak, it really shouldn't be a problem if the gasket that you are throwing out gets torn up. Don't worry, you will be able to get it out fully. Just watch as you jack the motor up that nothing under the hood is getting damaged and this shouldn't be too bad of a job.

2000 Chevy Express 4.3 oil pan gasket

Question From dbarrett on 2000 Chevy Express 4.3 oil pan gasket

How hard is it to change the oil pan gasket on 2000 Chevy Express van with the 4.3 liter V6? It looks there will be enough room between the pan and cross member to get the pan off without raising the engine. I noticed the pan is attached to the transmission in several places. I have to replace the water pump so I am considering replacing the timing cover(which also leaks) and the oil pan gasket if it is a "do at home" job. Thanks for any help! David

Response From dave284 Top Rated Answer

Thats a job......but remember the oil pick-up tube comes down 4 or 6 inches too.... the engine would have to be raised to clear it.

2002 ford taurus something leaking under the car

Question From mikep3000 on 2002 ford taurus something leaking under the car

so last year replace the oil pan gasket and 1 of the 16 bolts stripped off during the replacement. but the whole year been fine no leaking at all. but then when i turned on the heat. the last 2 weeks the smell in the vents are back and its leaking something under the car now. trying to figure out what to do now or if that is the issue. also the power steering cap had power steering fluid on top of the cap as well

Response From Hammer Time

Obviously, you are going to have to determine the source of the leak. If it is the pan again, you will have to remove the pan and repair the stripped bolt using a heli-coil repair kit and put a new gasket. If it's a steel pan, make sure it isn't bent from over tightening.

Response From mikep3000

how much you think it just cost to get checked out?

Response From Tom Greenleaf

How much to check something out? Call and ask the shop of your choice,

T

Response From mikep3000 Top Rated Answer

cost to them to check for a leak and then for them to replace an oil pan gasket. cause i heard it runs 500 because of the labor for the job since the oil pan gasket is hard to get to

Response From Hammer Time

$500 isn't all that much. Don't ask us what it would cost. We don't even know what engine it has.

Response From Discretesignals

On some of the older Fords with the C2 pump will push fluid out the top of the cap if you turn the wheels with the engine not running.
