Question From Guest on oil filter change

have a 2003 olds alero 2.2 liter 4 cyl. and want to change the oil. It's not a traditional oil filter, just the cartridge, but the question is where is the oil filter at on the engine?

Response From Loren Champlain Sr Top Rated Answer

It is in a housing. Look straight down on the driver's side of the engine, towards the front of the engine.

Response From Tom Greenleaf

Look for a can that will hold just the element. I don't have any specific info myself the the metal container is reused by the looks of the design as shown below......

Question From videomann! on Oil Filter location

Hi All, need to know where (or is there) the oil filter is located for a 2010 Malibu Lt 4-cyl?

Response From Hammer Time

It's cartridge type and it accessed from the top

Response From videomann! Top Rated Answer

Thx Hammertime, I found it... I just figured it should be where all the rest of my oil filters usually were, but they went and changed it, I actually like being able to access it from the top--- piece of cake and I reset the oil life. Thx for taking the time

Response From Tom Greenleaf

Kinda new for me to have direct knowledge of where. Found what type it is and it would be in a metal permanent container if this is correct? Filter looks like this.........

By style only, that type would have a hard shell and either whole shell turns or perhaps a long bolt goes thru. Either way, before you get going get a filter and see if instructions are in with packaging which if like I suspect will also have an "O" ring with it for a seal.

Guess at to what it could look like........

It's possible for this to be remotely mounted and not on the engine block. Too new for me but the idea is old as the hills - that is for sure as I own one in a 1948!

Response From videomann!

Thx Tom, it took me and the wife a second to find it, but we did and all is well!!! We weren't trying to pay 32.00 for an oil change and we changed the oil life for the computer. I'm happy with the results!!!!

Response From nickwarner

take care in removing this as it is a plastic top on the housing and easily damaged without the proper socket

Question From bubbly on FULL oil filters

I recently bought three (3) FULL oil filters (OPH2835) for my 1996 4 cylinder Dodge Grand Caravan. Not being familiar with FULL oil filters does anyone have any thoughts on these filters.?

Response From Tom Greenleaf

What! I know I've been in a cave for too long but do you mean they are full of oil? If so, I don't like that. What kind of oil if so and some applications on assorted vehicles/engines that would just spill most out to put it on if so. Not familiar with this but want to know myself,

T

Response From bubbly Top Rated Answer

The question I posed was does anyone familiar with the FULL brand of filters made in Thailand have any thouhts?

Response From Tom Greenleaf

OK: I just haven't run across that brand name. The way the world seems to work is companies will buy from the lowest bid which scared me. I've been a believer in Wix which is also NAPA Gold series and they cost lots more and now will look and see when in shop next where they are made.

See what the others say but I'd take them back,

1993 Chevy 1500 w/ 5.7 liter oil filter housing leak

Question From mrcurti on 1993 Chevy 1500 w/ 5.7 liter oil filter housing leak

I have a serious oil leak that appears to be coming from above the oil filter housing. I don't see an apparent way to remove it, but also have not removed the oil filter either. Also once removed, how hard will the repair be? Can any one help?

Response From sbake58

Does it have the remote filter with oil lines attached to the housing on the engine? If so, there is a gasket between the housing and block which can harden and leak. If it's the standard mount, there are two bolts attaching it to the block which can loosen and allow it to leak in the same manner.

Response From pjstanley Top Rated Answer

There is a gasket where the oil filter attaches. My 96 GMC had the same problem. We thought it was the front main leaking. It poured oil. We had the front main completely redone. While fixing the front main, the oil filter gasket was noticed and replaced. It turned out to not be the front main. The gasket was replaced and no oil leak since.

Response From shads

I had the same problem a few years ago with my '93 Chevy. There are a couple of gaskets on the mating surfaces of the housing. When I replaced the gaskets on mine, the old ones crumbled in my hands. I guess with all the heat and oil exsposure over the years. If I remember correctly there are two bolts that hold the housing in place, remove the bolts, pull off the housing, clean off the old gasket material, replace the gaskets and reinstall with a new oil filter. I would not recommend using gasket maker, get the real gaskets. Mine hasn't leaked since. Pretty easy but messy job to do.

Response From fatcat128

Try taking off the filter and tightning the bolts inside of the "housing" might not work but it is worth a try.

Response From tomsmith

i've never heard of an oil filter housing. but from what you've said, you might want to take off the oil filter and see if it is double gasketed(left the old O-ring on there from the last time the filter was changed.) it happens more than one would think, i used to work at an instant oil change place, and would see 5 or 6 a week. also, when you change the filter, lightly coat the O-ring with fresh oil. might also want to check and see if your valve covers are leaking.

Question From TVCamMan on oil filter in a chevy hhr

I am trying to find where the oil filter is on my 2008 chevy hhr.
Is there a website that has a picture of where it is located?
Thanks

Response From Loren Champlain Sr

TVCamMan; It will depend on which engine you have, but your owner's manual should show it. On a lot of the newer vehicles, there will be a 'flap' on the under side that you must open to gain access to the filter and the drain plug.
Good luck.

Response From TVCamMan

Its a 4cyl, 2.2 ltr
Unfortunately it didn't come with an owners manual.
I tried looking for it but couldn't find it

Response From Hammer Time

They're not using spin on filters any more. This has a cartridge replacement.

Response From TVCamMan

Is there a larger scale picture I can't tell where that is in respect to the whole engine compartment

Response From Hammer Time

That's the only picture available.
The arrow is pointing to the front of the engine and the filter is on the left rear.

Response From TVCamMan

thanks I think I found it

Response From Loren Champlain Sr

Kudos to Hammer. I don't do oil changes any more, but I've seen what he showed you. I like filling the cavity with oil once you drop the cartridge in so that the engine doesn't start with it 'dry'. With spin-on oil filters, would always fill them with oil before installing. Be careful to not overtorque the cover. But, they are inexpensive if you break it.

Response From TVCamMan

I read somewhere that you should replace the cartridge first then change the oil or doesn't it make a difference.

Response From Loren Champlain Sr

No, just drain the oil, best when the engine is warm, remove the filter, install the new filter and refill with fresh oil.

Response From TVCamMan Top Rated Answer

thanks

Response From Guest

Is there anything I should be aware of when I change my oil. Anything else that's different than changing the oil on any other vehicle
