Question From customs09 on 1989 ford sezed oil filter

what i ha have is a 1989 ford e 150 club wagon with 5.0 302 around 143 k miles the oil filter is seized to the engine and i need to replace it running out of ideas need help running out of ideas

Response From amerillove

Hmnmn...I usually can use the full circle band type...

Response From Hammer Time

I have always found that punching a hole in a filter to turn it does nothing but make a bigger hole. The shell of the filter is no where near strong enough to resist that.

What I usually do is use a very long pry bar with a flat, sharp edge on it. Position the bar so you can dig the tip of the bar into the bottom edge of the filter annd pry it sideways against the block so the tip of the bar is pushing on the base of the filter to turn it. That nearly always works but you have to grab it right at the lower lip.

Response From re-tired

All good ideas . I've used them all . When using the screwdriver trick , go high as poss and thru the core of filter , never had one tear. If gorilla's wouldnt tighten till stop turning , with no lube to boot , this would be a moot point.

Response From brager

i use the open "c clamp" wrench works almost on all makes..

Response From Tom Greenleaf

Whatever works - I've done most of the tricks listed. I usually can use the full circle band type and once in a while one that was dry and overtightened comes by. One band type wrench I had to grind to be thinnner on a vehicle that was so close.

Cheap filter's metal will collapse a filter sometimes!

I had an oil filter put on so tight I had to use an air chisel on it to get it to turn. I need only say the shop who put it on was a franchise with a great reputation for keeping REAL auto repair shops in business fixing their screw-ups.
Did I mention the car that came in with an oil leak right after they had the oil changed at that franchise? They stripped the drain plug, instead of using the rubber expansion plug, believe it or not, they put Duct tape over the drain plug hole. NICE

ha! i hear you makes me wonder with all the srew ups how these
franchises manage to stay in business at all. i can remember years
ago going to one of these places to only come home and after find out
after backing car out of the garage finding a pudle of oil because the monkey
striped the bolt on the oil pan i took my car back there and they fixed it
and refilled it back up for me later at home i checked the oil level they overfilled it by half
a quart like i always say if i wanted a half ass job i would of done
it myself.. stay away from these faST IN OUT places.

Response From Tom Greenleaf

In fairness to the fast oil change places they aren't all bad but I don't like the rush factor. Virtually every stripped drain plug was from those type places. I have a drawer full of self tapping replacements in increments of larger size and a rubber plug on hand if all fails. The self tapping ones are a permanent fix if the hole will tolerate it and you get a nice straight shot. Can't re-replace that with OE once done but they are marked with the amount oversize if you can remember it if lost somehow.

In school for this and have seen it written to replace the drain plug's gasket each time! Even I don't but do take a hard look at them and have those at the ready as well.

I don't blame the workers - it's all in proper training like anything else. What makes my head spin is how quick can you (I still do two) C/K 4X4 GMs from the 90s and hit every grease fitting as you usually need to steer the car for one and turn the drive-shaft to find that one on the slip mid shaft.

IMO even what is thought to be such a simple thing is better off with trained techs. There's also replacement FE parts with grease fittings on cars/trucks that originally were all sealed so you need to look and know to look.

A vehicle is too important and expensive to short cut proper maintenance,

Response From Sidom

Yea I know what you mean..........Had an 05 Chry 300 2.7 in today that was just suppose to be an LOF that turned into an oil pan for the exact reason you stated. The fleet company just approved the bill & didn't even care about the other shop, if you can believe that......

I don't know if it's just me or my area, but I'm seeing way more of this kind of stuff than I use to..........

Response From Tom Greenleaf

Franchise places - gotta love it, one newer place has a huge sign out front "10 minute oil changes!" - I'm worried!

Response From re-tired

Whats even scareier , more scarey , frightening , is that this mindset is spilling over into the medical field. In and out same day surgery . small operations being done while you wait , whats next ?.......... HEART SURGERY in 20 min or its free . I guess the family collects on this one.

Response From steve01832

While you're sitting in the doctor's waiting room you can see the surgeon honing his scalpal with a psychotic smirk on his face yelling: " the book time on this amputation is 2 hours. I bet I can do it in less than 20 minutes".
lol

Response From Sidom

What I've done on some of those that don't want to come off. Is to use the steel band style o/f wrench and get it up as close to the top of the oil filter (where it goes into the block) as possible, put a bar on the handle & loosen it that way. Getting it right at the top eliminates the torque loss on the body of the filter. You do want to use a good o/f wrench for this. If it's a cheapy then you'll probably break the wrench when you put a bar on it..........

Response From Hammer Time

What do you mean by "seized". Is it just too tight?

Response From re-tired

Place a catch pan under filter . Drive a large screwdriver thru filter and use the handle for increased leverage. Be super carefull with any sharp edges , wear gloves is you got'em . When installing new filter apply small amount of clean oil on O ring . Tighten per instuctions on filter .
