I just had an o2 sensor (front) and radiator replaced in my 03 subaru impreza. After leaving mechanics, my check engine light came back on, the temp went back up into the red but the car is not over heating and the heat / defrost is blowing cool air. What now? Any ideas?

Sounds like it's overheating! Air in system for any reason won't transfer heat. A,B,C here - your gauge says your are hot, your CEL is on and you have no heat -- three strikes that it IS overheating still. Driving it may have added a head gasket job or more to the fix,

I did call them. They basically told me too bad. They put in the radiator and the sensor. If I want to pay more, bring it in. Never ever going back. I only went to Sullivan Tire as I broke down in front of the business. So I now have a car that's in perfect shape except the engine. Gonna use a sledgehammer on it I think!

Bought used in September 2009. Old owner had new battery a few months before.
December 2009: New wires, spark plugs, oil filter and general tune-up.
March 2010: O2 Sensor changed.

Thursday, we blew the clutch and catalytic converter. Our Midas guy shot with an estimate of $1,700 for the flywheel, CC, and the clutch. Our honest mechanic shot $1,500 (without actually seeing the car).

My questions on this one is as follows:
1. Is it worth it? What's going to fall apart next? We've already sunk a-whole-lot of money in at this point.
2. Can I get this done cheaper? I know our mechanic mentioned (again, not seeing the car...) that the flywheel might be able to be resurfaced rather than replaced. Should I be looking into online parts? What might I be able to cut this price down to? If we can get this number at or below 1K, we're down to pay it.

Any advice, insight, etc. that anyone could provide would be GREAT.

That has a dual mass flywheel. Those are not resurfaceable. Depending on how bad the disc got, you could try cleaning it up but it would be a big gamble..... Most shops would want to change it to warranty the job...

As far as what going to go out next is anyones guess.. No one could realistically answer that question.

If there has been a pattern of thing going out, then that is hard to ignore..........

So I have a question. My car is throwing codes for both knock detonation sensor and o2 sensor are bad. I haven't noticed a loss in power but the car has probably had this ussue since I got it. So it could have a loss in power. Only thing that I am noticing is lately a rough or not stable idle, I start my car once and it starts perfect. I try again and it stutters,, turn it off try again and it starts up fine, turn it off and try it again it sorta stutters in RPM's. Its really inconsistent. I haven't had the car long enough to notice if im getting bad gas milage because in comparison to my last car it is getting awesome mileage. I do notice a strong odor from exhaust almost like fuel. Meaning it is getting to much fuel which I have heard is related to the bad knock sensor. I just want to know which one I should try replacing first that corresponds with my symptoms. My car start everytime, its just iffy on the idle when doing so. And it gets better as the car gets warmer. Its also throwing codes for misfires in cylinder 3/4 every other time I run the obd2, so maybe a spark plug change aswell? Somone said pil might be leaking into one of the spark plugs, and I have noticed a smell of oil burning somewhere in the engine bay, but very minimal because I don't lose very much oil at all. Barley have to add any between 3000 mile oil changes. 1997 Subaru legacy 2.5 gt. TIA.

First, realize that codes are not a magic ball and do not tell you that a sensor or other part is bad. There are upwards of 20 different codes related to an O2 sensor but most do not even indicate a bad sensor. The codes point to a circuit and give a direction to look in. They are a start to a diagnosis, not a diagnosis in itself.
On an OHC engine the plugs are down in some wells in the valve cover. The gasket has seals that go around each of those tubes. If they leak then oil gets down around the plug and shorts it to ground through the block instead of the full power going through the spark plug. You should look down the wells and see if this is happening. If it is, a new valve cover gasket will be needed, and you should change the plugs and wires while you are in there. If there is a lot of oil in the plug tube, you should suction as much out as you can before you pull the plug out so you don't dump a bunch into the cylinder. If a lot of oil is in there, you could potentially hydrolock it when you go to start it later. At minimum it will smoke like hell for a few minutes.
You are smelling fuel out of the exhaust because you have a misfire and that gas didn't get burned in the cylinder. It is important to fix that before you damage your catalyst from the raw fuel entering it or wash down a cylinder with fuel and wipe the rings out. Also, some of the fuel will wash down into the oil so when you are getting rid of the misfire you should change the oil. Oil watered down with gasoline doesn't lubricate well and will wreck the rest of the motor.
Check out the plug wells and condition of the spark plugs, and also please post back with the exact code numbers you are getting so we have a direction to go with the diagnosis.

Hey, So I got my car, (Subaru Impreza 2000 RS 2.5) and its has a pulsing Idle. I start my car cold, idles around 500 rpms (the normal) then once the car is warm, its starts to pulse. Always goes lower in rpms then corrects itself back to 500. But in the correction it never fully corrects itself so its always decreasing. Then the car dies. Only at stops. the car runs fine when driving. Except acceleration is rough. If I turn on my A/C, it almost keep the car alive. Only when the A/C is increasing the idle does the pulsing go away and no stall occurs. When the A/C is turned off the pulsing come back. On the low end of the pulse the dash lights dim.

I have checked the alternator and the test was positive. Reading around 14.3. I also had replaced the fuel injectors. Cleaned the o2 sensors and IAC valve. Checked the grounds. The wires plugs and coil pack are fairly new 10,000 miles. I have also cleaned the throttle body opening and my cars MAP sensor.

so i tested the iac valve and thats fine. drove the car too the grocery store and the cel came on. misfire on 1 2 3 4. The coilpack is new so i checked the wires and plugs and they have oil all over them. coming out of the spark plug holes.

same problems previously stated still exist

You should start out with checking out the Idle air control valve and related parts. It's possible you have a dirty throttle body or possibly a bad valve..

Pretty much all fuel injected cars will default to a cold start position when shut off. What this means is when you start the car the rpms should go high, around 1000. If the car is actually cold the rpms will stay high for as long as that particular cold start strategy calls for. If it is already warm the rpms will come down quickly to the normal range but will always start high even if for just a second or 2.

If when your start you car it is only going up to 500 rpms when it's started, something is wrong there and needs to be addressed....


I just reread your post & see where you've done some of this. Unfortunately after you do some of these basics and it doesn't work, then you need some more complex tools to check out the system.... The only other thought I have is to make sure you don't have any vacuum leaks. Check the hoses & spray some carb clean around the intake manifold. Any raise in rpm would indicate a leak....

Other than that it gets a little tougher to nail down....

I have a 2004 Subaru impreza wrx. 2.5 short block wit forged pistons, 2.0 heads ported and polished +1mm oversized valves stage 2 cams 255lph fuel pump 850cc injector, td05 16g turbo intake and full exhaust.the motor only has 10k on but the body has 107k. The car will run for a few hrs then the guages all start going bonkers the check engine light will go off then on. I loose power when the light starts flashing. no new stored codes (2 stored o2 sensor heat codes but have been there for a long time) after that if i slow down the car will shut off and wont start. you can hear the fuel pump running and if you go under the hood you can hear the fuel running threw the fuel pressure reg. i tapped it (fpr) and it shutoff and started right up. so i replaced the fpr figured the prob was fixed but i was wrong and had to get towed home last night. if you leave it long enough the car will start up but if i drive it the prob wit start again. so i dont know where to start looking. I hope some can plz help me.

Well it sounds like you have a lot going on here with a lot of different modifications....... Even with the AM fuel pump it still has to be tied into the PCM circuit some how. With that being said, when the engine is off there is no way the fuel pump should remain running...period....

Why,, is a different story....Could be a driver issue or something staying grounded when it shouldn't. This really sounds like just an electrical problem, so the mechanical modifications shouldn't have anything to do with it...

I guess the best place to start would be to look at at the fuel problem. Find out why the pump is staying on when the car is off and that might tie in with your dash problem.....

Considering all the mods that were made I'm not even sure how they tied all this stuff in or if my diagrams would be accurate or not.....

The best source for this info would probably be the shop that built this car...........

i should have been more clear sorry. wit the key on the fuel pump stays running NOT when the key is off. usualy when i turn the key on the fuel pump runs for 2 or 3 sec then shut off then the car starts up fine but when this prob starts the fp runs non stop wit the key on. so idk if it a short in the fp somewhere. i hope this clears things up.

Yes I assumed that's what you meant, with the key on engine off (KOEO) and with the KOEO the pump shouldn't stay running on any car for more than a couple of seconds.

That is the 1st problem that needs to be traced down.....


This one is probably a little beyond me...... I'm a straight factory tech...... I don't really get into high pro & street mods.... While the mechanical mod really shouldn't have anything to do with it, there has been some electrical conversion as well and this is where the questions arise..... What connecter where cut/altered & where? How well where the harnesses sealed??? What effect does the different current flow have on the PCM & related circuits??? Probably nothing.....but that could be where the trouble lies......

I would talk to the shop that did the mods 1st..... If this problem is common to some of there AM parts they might know right off the bat without even having to pick up a meter..............
