PCMs weren't used until 96 and OBD2. You do have a computer though.

If anyone else is reading this, I need the catalytic conv. replaced. I was quoted 700 for a shop that is including the 2 new O2 Sensors. Is there anyway around this? The car is a 2003 Mazda 6S has 156,000 miles. The car has been great, so I don't mind fixing it, or this might be the end of the road for the car. Thanx for any help. Dan

Hi Israel,

First off - good luck with learning this trade. It's changed a lot since I was the student. You will need to know exactly what vehicle you are dealing with. Ford and others have joined forces with other companies completely and just Ford has sold vehicles that are really Nissans or Mazdas with just a few cosmetic changes. The VIN will tell about all.

From there you can find out what is in there exactly. O2 sensors generally unscrew like a spark plug but can give a fight with corrosion. How they plug in to wiring can be different. Just witnessed a Lexus getting O2 sensors and it required removing the carpeting!! No joke - a customer would think you were crazy but that's where it hooked up!

Make sure your engine isn't running to cold. you may warp the head

If you also removed the O2 sensor with the cat...well then your ECU isn't getting any signal and is dumping gas wholesale into your carb !!
If you don't want the cat but still want to lean out the gas and save in fuel and polution reduction go to
link removed by mod. not relevent to question
for more info on how to do that. There you will find out how to reduce your emmissions, clean up those soft carbon deposits, and save dramatically on your gas bill too.

Is this to suggest it wasn't running rich till converter was removed? Why did you remove it anyway and what's in its place?

i find this a little odd.. because basically what a converter does is heat up and burn off any excess unburnt fuel in the exhaust. and the 02 sensor at the rear of the converter reads the oxygen levels in the exhaust and tells the computer wether the car is running to rich or too lean.

now if the converter was removed i would think the 02 sensor would be detecting an extremely rich exhaust flow and tell the computer to lean out the air/fuel mixture thus giving you a constant lean condition.

inorder to help that situation they sell anti-foulers (pretty much a just a Spacer) for the 02 sensor. What they do is remove the tip of the sensor up out of the direct exhaust flow and up into the spacer thus in basic terms giving the sensor a false reading.

I have a 1999 Mazda 626 ES V6, auto trans, FWD, and 91K miles on it. I have the Check Engine light on since a few weeks.

I have the following error codes using OBDII tool
P0133 - Heated oxygen sensor H02S RF circuit malfunction

P1131 - Heated Oxygen sensor Bank1, sensor1 (H02S11)

P0040 - EGR system leak detected

The car starts, and runs fine, no strange noises, or stuttering. Recently, I had the fuel pump replaced. Gas lid is closed tightly.

I would appreciate if someone could help me get a rough estimate for repairs. I'm trying to make a decision whether to get the repairs done or get a replacement car. Thanks very much!

Try spraying the outside of EGR area with carb cleaner and see if that changed idle. If no change then try cleaning the EGR. The pintle underside may not seal well?? If caked up sometimes they can be cleaned.

The EGR may be taxing O2 sensors and the O2 sensors are not the first problem but the result of another for now. Not sure why it said fault in circuit. Do see if it's at least plugged in properly and no burned wires,

Do give it a try. Know that code readings vary in quality and info collected. Take them with some common sense and don't just toss parts at everything it found some "error" with too quickly but think it thru.

When it can't communicate you will get a code that, that area has an issue. Can be a dumb as being unplugged. One minor fault that makes an engine run improperly can tax other items so you can get multiple codes and it's only one problem. Some when ignored can cause real problems with items that could be saved if timely.

Troubleshooting the problem seemed beyond by abilities. I had a repair shop look at it. They indicated that the EGR valve may need to replaced. Its diaphgram seemed to be faulty. They also said that cleaning will not resolve the issue. EGR valve is around $350 + $230 labor. I was also able to locate the part at a salvage yard for a fraction of the cost and found someone that is willing to install it for around $100 I am wondering if it is worth replacing it for a car with 91K miles.
