The key is trying to figure out what the engine is doing when it is running lean. The best method to determine how the air fuel mixture is is by monitoring the O2 sensor voltage.

I doubt you have an scan tool that can read engine data on that, so you might have to manually check the O2 sensor voltage using a volt meter.

It is also possible the O2 sensor can stick lean which makes the engine computer add more fuel to the engine when it doesn't need it. It might make it stumble and run rich and set that lean code. It is important to make sure the O2 sensor is functioning properly before using it to diagnose a fueling problem.

my truck has dual tanks but one pump went bada few years ago.i think ill just go ahead and replace that one so i can rule out any fuel pump problems from the list.

That is one possibility. A fuel pressure gauge test would confirm something like that.

got me a fuel pump.i was just going to pul the tank to check the little line but just in case its the pump dont want to have to pull the tank twice.

Just make sure the tank is clean before you install your new pump. There is a filter on the pump, but it doesn't filter everything. It would probably be a good idea to have the tank cleaned by a radiator shop if it is in good shape.

drove it for a little while know an seems to be fixed ty guys for the help.it was prbly just the line because it was like it melted and cracking but i went ahead and changed the pump so i dont have to take the tank off agian.

The "check engine" light is an indicator for a system that monitors many electronic functions in the system, also called the "malfunction indicator lamp" (MIL). It can come on for any of hundreds of different causes from any of the systems that the computer monitors. Some are very important and can lead to further component or engine damage and some are emissions related not as serious but still a problem and need to be repaired.

Your first step is to have the computer scanned to retrieve the trouble codes that were set when the check engine light came on. Those codes will give you specific information about what the computer saw and will get you pointed in the right direction to find your problem. With a 1996 or newer and some 95 cars and you have an AutoZone or Advanced auto parts in your area, they will read them for free. Once you have these code numbers, we can be a lot more specific about what your problem may be.

Basically that means that the O2 sensor didn't switch to lean when the PCM commanded the AIR pump on. The AIR pump sends air/oxygen to the catalyst when the vehicle is first started to get the catalyst up to operating temperatures faster. When the PCM turns on the pump that creates more oxygen in the exhaust which the O2 sensor picks up on. The PCM uses the o2 sensor as feedback to be sure the AIR system is actually pumping air into the exhaust.

The first thing you do when diagnosing that kind of problem is to verify the pump is actually working. The air pump should come on for several seconds when you first start a cold engine. Do you hear it come on?

Just finished a complete exhaust job on my 1993 GMC 3500 with a 350 and AT. Replaced everything from the manifold back including the oxygen sensor before the cat. covt. Now she won't start and is choking black smoke while trying to start! This was only a exhaust job and she ran fine before -- any ideas-- has the new oxy sensor fried my computer??

no flames - just unbolted and dropped the old. Old sensor had welded itself with rust to old pipe so a new one was only $18.

Unplug the O2 sensor. With a digital multimeter, set volt scale to 12vdc. Turn key on engine off and test O2 sensor plug on vehicle side. If you have approx. 1/2v the computer is fine. I'm assuming this is a single wire O2 sensor. Computers look only at the O2 sensor voltage after the engine is at operating temp. It shouldn't affect a cold start. My question is "Did you use a welder when you did the exhaust or was it slip on with clamp)? A mig welder can send high voltage back on the vehicle frame and can spike a computer if you leave the battery connected! OOPS

no it was a slip on with clamps. no electrical charge at all because the battery had been disconnected before I worked on it

Yes that why this is so puzzling - I took the exhaust off and disconnected the o2 sensor and she still won't start and is choking on black smoke like incomplete burning of fuel.

Can you smell fuel if you crank the engine for about 20 seconds? If you can, let's check for spark at a plug wire.

Yes, she's trying to start but she can't catch her breath! It's a throttle body injection and the only thing I can think of is the timing is out of sync or the computer is behind or ahead in it firing order???

I have a 96 gmc sierra 1500 2 wheel drive with a 5.0 vortec engine 160xxx. I bought it last spring with no problems, everything was running good, no check engine light or anything wrong, well the guy neglected to tell me the oil pump was no good and i blew the engine, so i put in a newer engine and now the check engine light is on with trouble codes (P0135, P0140, and P0141) the only o2 sensor i unhooked was the bank 2 sensor 1 b/c the wire runs behind the motor and i didn't want it to get pinched but its the bank one side where the codes are, i checked the wires and they look fine, the truck runs fine, but every once in awhile the check engine light will go off for a day our 2, any idea what might have happened in the week it say while changing out engines that would cause them codes to come up? And what should i do to fix it b/c my inspection is about to run out?

I would verify that these sensors are plugged in firmly. I doubt you have 2 bad heaters so check all your fuses. If they are OK, test for power and ground at the sensor at the 2 like colored wires.

I unplugged all of then today to check to see other were dirty but they were all good, and i put em back together pretty snug... The only fuse i could find in the book is for the (heated o2) in the engine compartment but that was fine, should there be a fuse anywhere else?

Dont know what it is? The truck starts every time after it stalls , the only time this happens is when it is warmed up. I have replaced the following, distributer, cab, wires, plugs, o2 sensor,. The egr was checked map sensor aswell. I have spent over 800.00 and it is not fixed yet. Please help. Thanks

bearman; As Hammer suggested, that is the most common problem. A couple of other thoughts if that doesn't take care of the issue; 1) You'll need a scanner, but would like to see what the CTS is seeing when this happens. 2) Check for vacuum leaks. When the engine is cold, the CTS will command a rich mixture, which can 'mask' a leak. 3) Since it starts right up after stalling, this might be tough, but need to find out if it is losing spark at that particular time. 4) Crank sensors can go bad when hot, although not common on this particular vehicle, and not always set a DTC. Same with ignition control modules. If the IAC cleaning doesn't take care of it, do more diagnosing prior to throwing parts at it. We can help you with that, if you need it.

You may have a bad IAC ( idle air control) but try cleaning the throttle body first. Remove the intake snorkel, have someone hold the throttle wide open for you and scrub the back side of the throttle plate and surrounding bore with an old tooth brush and some carb cleaner. Be sure to spray some into the small holes next to the throttle plate. That should help stabilize the idle. If it still has a problem, replace the IAC.
