Hi. My name is Jim. I have several error codes on my 92 Cadillac Sedan Deville. 154,000 miles. Can you tell me what Code F30 means? As added info, my climate control comes on and off at random and changes functions on it's own at random. My remote door lock just stopped working. And my trunk button will not work. Error codes are E13, E44, E52 (I know this is when I disconnecte the battery), F30 and F48. I wonder if all these codes tie into to each other and may be the BCM? Thanks for any info and advice.

Do you have experience in diagnosing electrical problems including signaling on vehicles?

Code F30 is set if the BCM is unable to receive data from the Electronic Climate Control panel (ECC).

E13 has to do with the O2 sensor not changing voltages
E44 is the O2 sensor is staying lean either because there is a circuit issue or the engine is running lean for some reason.
E52 means KAM was lost...probably because you had disconnected the battery.
F38 pressure means the BCM detected a low refrigerant level.

Thanks Discretsignals. No I don't have much auto electrical experience. And you mentioned F38, but it was F48. Also there is a slight smell of anti freeze when I start it up. But no leaks and the passenger side footmat is dry. Car drives good, but I'm afrads to take it to a dealer and have them start fixing things when it could be one thing such as the BCM causing it all.

I apologize, F48 means there is a problem with the refrigerant level in the ac system. If the refrigerant level gets too low that can cause that code to trigger and the compressor will be disabled. Until there is the proper amount of refrigerant in the system and the code is cleared, that problem will remain.

I wouldn't condemn the BCM if it is flagging trouble codes. You stated your AC panel is acting goofy, so you might want to troubleshoot why. That means checking power and grounds to be sure it has what it needs. You may also need to check the communication circuit that the AC control panel talks to the BCM on to make sure it isn't pulled high or low all the time. Checking sensor supply voltage that comes from the panel would be important also.

The O2 sensor codes shouldn't have anything to do with the BCM. You'd have to monitor the O2 sensor voltage and do some O2 sensor tests to see if it working or not.

If your smelling coolant, you should have the coolant system pressure tested. Sometimes leaks don't show up unless the system is under pressure and the engine is cold.

UPDATE: I tool the car on a good road test several hundred miles and back. I changed the plugs and new oil and filter before hand. They were the original plugs (154,000 miles). I thought I would see if that would correct the sensor codes. But the Climate Control went completely out. It does not light up and none of the buttons work, so I can't het back to error code check. The defroster is continually on. I don't know if it is the Climate Control module or BCM. I'm continuing to work with it. Any and All advice from anybody still appreciated.

UPDATE: I'm still dealing with this problem. Ground issue does not seem to be the problem. My next move I think will be to take the Climate Control module out. Is there a way to check if it is operational by taking it out? I can replace it, but would like to know if it is operational (meaning I have another problem) or it's not operational (meaning replacing it should fix my problem). Otherwise the car runs and drives fine.

I want to thank you Discretesignals for your help. I replaced the Electronic Climate Control with a used one and that solved my biggest problem. My ECC is now communicating with the BCM and working properly. I stopped getting the sensor codes after I replaced the plugs, but yesterday the engine started running rough a little and I got an engine light. I checked codes and I have E-13 and E-44 again. I am planning on replacing the oxygen sensors to see if it clears this problem up. Thanks for all the advice and if anyone has anymore advice on these codes please let me know. I am very thankful for this forum.

The check engine light comes on and car runs rough as if on 6 or 7 cylinders. I had the plugs replaced. They were original plugs with 154,000 miles on them. It ran pretty good for about a week, good gas mileage and then it did it again. I check the fault codes and have E-13 and E-44 which means oxygen sensors. E-13 basically means the O2 sensor isn't active. Could be from a wiring issue, the sensor has oil leaking all over it, the sensor got contaminated by something, or the sensor has failed.

Your Caddy only has one O2 sensor. It should be located in the exhaust manifold near the engine firewall. You might need a special O2 sensor socket to get it out if you can't get a 7/8 inch wrench on it.

If the O2 sensor is contaminated because the engine is burning oil or coolant or it is being leaked all over, you'll wreck the new sensor if you don't correct those issues.

E-44 is o2 lean. Could be either because the engine is actually leaned out, you got a misfire going on, you have an exhaust leak before or around the sensor, the sensor is stuck lean internally, the crkt is shorted to ground, or misfiring cylinders.

Being the age of the vehicle, if the sensor is original and is not contaminated by something, it probably wouldn't hurt to replace the sensor and check its voltage output. You can do that with a volt meter back probing the O2 sensor connector. It should fluctate between 0 and 1 volt DC. Your sensor does not have a heater, so you will need to heat up the sensor by raising the engine rpm or driving the vehicle at cruising speeds.

I recommend NTK, Denso, or a Delco sensors. Don't install a Bosch or universal one.

I want to thank both Hammer Time and Discretesignals for all their help and advice on the oxygen sensor problem. I have located it and it is completely dry and does not appear to be contaminated in anyway. I am currently looking for a vacuum leak. I have no leaks anywhere that I can find. One of you mentioned burning oil or coolant. I can smell coolant after I drive the car for a short time, but it goes away quickly. Does this give you any idea of what to look for if it is a coolant problem that is affecting the oxygen sensor?

Are you losing coolant? Not from the recovery bottle I mean any air at the radiator? If that's really burning coolant that's first thing to chase down IMO or what's the point in continually trashing sensors?

First understand one thing. There is NO code that means any component is bad. The component referred to in a code is not necessarily the cause of the code, especially when you are talking about 0/2 sensors.

The E-13 is 0/2 not ready and the E-44 is a lean code. Something as simple as a vacuum leak can do that.


Code E44 will set when:

  1. There is an oxygen sensor circuit fault giving a false lean indication. OR
  2. When the air fuel ratio is actually lean due to a vacuum leak or fuel control system fault.



Possible causes of code E13 are:
  1. An open in CKT 412 or 413.
  2. A short to voltage on CKT 412 or 413.
  3. An oxygen sensor that cannot respond.

Don't waste your money. The O/2 isn't the problem. If you have no leaks in the exhaust system ahead of the converter, then you will have to replace the converter.

I assume you meant the engine size is 4.6 since they didn't make a 4.9 in 04

Bank one would be the right or rear side of the engine.

Hi,

I have a 1985 Cadillac Eldorado (4.1 engine) (only 66,000 original miles) and I've been having a lot of trouble with my idle. The car used to periodically have trouble idling at stop lights, rev forward, and stall. This only happened after driving relatively long distances when the car was warm. It was a very rare problem, but now the car stalls nearly every time it idles for more than a few minutes (even cold).

It became really bad when I was driving it, heard a couple of choking sounds like the fuel wasn’t flowing right, and the car gradually lost power. Since the "big" issue came to be I've had the distributor cap and rotor (also the wiring for the cap), spark plugs, ISC motor, and coolant temperature sensor changed to no avail. Diagnostics test throws a code (18) for crank signal circuit but the mechanic is unsure if that is the actual problem. When the car idles at a stop light it'll run for a few minutes and stall out. It also struggles quite a bit in motion and when it is parked with the engine running it idles high, low, and stalls out within minutes. However, if you keep your foot on the gas pedal the car will idle well until it’s removed. I have a "service now" light that comes on right before the problem really kicks up. The MAT sensor is a suspect, as is a potential electrical short.

Any help would be greatly appreciated,

CadillacGirl; If it is coming up with a CKP code, that is definitely worth a look, but generally when they go bad, the engine will die (or be unable to start) because you will lose injector pulse. Keeping the idle up wouldn't normally help. But it is definitely worth checking. The MAT sensor can cause an idle issue, but I'm not convinced that it, either, would cause the symptoms you are experiencing. The problem with the older Cads, you can't get live data from the ECM, just the hokey heater controls. There are a couple things I'd like to check; 1) MAP sensor, and 2) Fuel filter and pressure. (mainly because this is happening at various temps). Might also have him check the O2 sensor. Unfortunately, most of these are going to have to be checked manually, so you are probably looking at some diagnostic charges.

Thank you for the suggestions. We do need to replace the fuel filter, but do you think that could be the sole issue causing this? It seems like more than that. I've also experienced the air conditioning turning itself on at one point which makes me feel like there might be a short. The electrical has been acting a bit strange since we changed the coolant temperature sensor. Any chance that one of those wires shorted out and is causing this? Also, my ECM shouldn't be bad if it's only throwing the crank code right? I'm fearing the worst right now. We've been fighting this issue for a week now. Been through two mechanics and both are stumped. I was told something is messed up in the communication with the ECM. Not quite sure what that comes down to.

Here is the possible causes of a code 18...


During engine cranking, a 12 volt signal is present in the cranking circuit between the ignition switch and ECM.
Code 18 indicates that the ECM is not receiving the 12 volt signal while the engine is being cranked. Possible causes of this condition are:

  1. Defective ignition switch
  2. Defective wiring harness or electrical connectors.
  3. ECM not processing signal.
  4. Blown 3 amp ``Crank'' fuse.

To diagnose a Code 18, proceed as follows:
  1. Check condition of 3 amp ``Crank'' fuse. If fuse is blown, check circuit 6 (1985, 806) for a short circuit to ground between the fuse and ECM. If circuit is satisfactory, replace fuse. If fuse blows again, check for faulty ECM or ECM connector and repair or replace as necessary.
  2. Crank engine while checking for voltage at crank fuse using voltmeter J-29125 or equivalent connected between fuse and ground. If reading of zero volts is obtained, check for open in circuit 6 (1985, 806) and repair as necessary.
  3. If reading of 12 volts is obtained at fuse, connect voltmeter lead to pin No. 1 at blue electrical connector. If voltmeter indicates 12 volts while cranking, check terminal for open condition. If terminal is in satisfactory condition, check for faulty ECMor ECM connector and repair or replace as necessary.
  4. If voltage reading is zero, check for open in circuit 6 (1985, 806) and repair as necessary.

Jim,

The car does start right back up after stalling. For a while it runs fine and acts like nothing happened, then the "service now" light starts flashing, and it struggles a bit. At a stop light when this is happening, the car stalls out at idle. It almost seems like it resets itself for a while and then the problem hits again. I did take it for diagnosic and the ISC was bad. They fixed that, however, and the code for that is now gone. The only code showing was for the crank now.

The plug on the MAT sensor is coated with gunk, which can't be good. Tonight the fuel filter and MAT sensor will be replaced. If those don't work, I'll definitely be checking the pick-up coil next. I sometimes hear a strange clicking noise when the car is idling. It's like a little tapping sound of metal. Any theories for that?

Kasey; The communication problem with the ECM is, unfortunately, uh, normal? I dread it when one of the older Caddys comes in. They are a diagnostitions nightmare. The CTS is very important; It tells the ECM engine temperature, and controls fuel delivery accordingly. If shorted to ground, I'm pretty sure the system would go full rich, which would cause an overfueling problem. Same with the MAP sensor. If it is 'falsely' seeing a drop in manifold vacuum, it will go full rich. If this were a normal OBDI system, you could hook up a scanner and see what the ECM is seeing. There is a spec chart that your mechanic can check CTS values at given temps. The A/C is climate control, correct? It will do 'it's' thing by itself, heating and cooling. There is an inside sensor to detect cabin temp, which could be causing that issue? Your Caddy is a low fuel pressure system. It only needs around 15psi, but if too low, could be definitely causing your grief. Have the fuel filter replaced, regardless, then have the fuel pressure tested if still having problems. Yes, it's possible it could be something very simple. Or not.

We have tried changing the plugs, wires, oxygen sensor, and fuel fliter. Also cleaned the mass airflow sensor. Over the last year it keeps getting worse, the only code it throws is the oxygen sensor even after we changed it. When starting to take off and going under 40mph is runs real rough like misfires. Also when sitting idle for awhile like to warm up, sometimes when I get in the car it smells like gas. The fuel millage has went from 320 to 240 in the last year. I have been told it could be the fuel regulator or the cadillac converter but most mechanics say there is nothing wrong with it...boy are they wrong. It runs so rough its scares me to drive it. Please help before it nickles and dimes me to death playing the guessing game.

does that have the quad 4 engine in it ? either way 4 or six, have you done a power balance on it ? using a test light grounded push it into the wire plugs where they go on the coilpack. make sure all cylinders are firing. sounds like your misfire may be an ignition prob. if you ground one of them and it does not react, thats your prob, that will also make it run rich, causing the o2 sensor to set codes. may not be your wires, may be a prob with your coil paks.

You don't want to probe the boot like that with a test light. It puts a hole in the insulate boot and will let the wire arch. Basically it ruins the wires, we're talking high voltage here and don't want any type of leak in the insulated boots or wires.

That's an old school test that actually works pretty good. If you want to do it without ruining the wire, get some 2" sections of vacuum line, super glue a spark plug tip into one end for the wire so the wire will snap on to it and put it in line between the wire & coil pack and then fire up the engine. Now you just need to touch the piece of vacuum line with the test light & it will ground the cyl without ruining the wire........

We have not done that yet, they have tested the wires and plugs but not to the coil. It does have the V6 engine. I think you might me right bc it has issues starting at times it just did it again tonight where it didnt want to start then i tried again and it started and shut off then on the third try after it started i hit the gas to keep it running, after that it ran fine on the way home. I think im going to try some GM fuel injection cleaner and have the coils tested. Thanks for all your help

How old are the plugs and wires?
I suspect it will set the O/2 codes again eventually and that will help identify the problem.

The wires are less than a year old and the plugs are 3 days old. I got good plugs and wires not the cheap ones. Ya im thinking the same thing, just hoping its not the timing chain and it leaves me standed one day lol
