Once you've removed the head, have it pressure tested and resurfaced before reinstalling.

1990 Nissan Pickup/Main relay plug keeps blowing up

Question From cjacinto1 on 1990 Nissan Pickup/Main relay plug keeps blowing up

1990 Nissan pickup, 4 cyl., charging system completely shut down while on road trip.New coil, new alternator, new battery completely recharged. It has now blown 2 main relay plugs, it will start on a bypass. Girl just does not know what to do

Response From Discretesignals

4 or 6 cylinder?
Don't quite understand what you mean by relay plugs. What exactly do you mean by blowing up?

Response From cjacinto1

Okay 4 cylinder and there is a box of plug ins on the left side of firewall, it is my understanding that the main one like the one in the center is blowing out 'cause so far I have bought 2 in a row.

Response From Hammer Time

Not sure what you are messing with there but the main relay is on the right side of the engine compartment and they don't just burn out like that.

The charging system doesn't use a relay but it does have a fusible link, probably located in the main fuse box.

Check your alternator wiring and make sure the main power wire is not touching ground anywhere.

Response From cjacinto1

Fuses are good and when ECCS relay/main relay is bypassed it's starts up, now what do u suggest?

Response From Hammer Time Top Rated Answer

You test the relay socket to find out which signal you are missing using a wiring diagram.

1996 nissan pickup XE battery wont stay charged.

Question From mattguiver on 1996 nissan pickup XE battery wont stay charged.

96 nissan pickup battery wont stay charged. I already replaced battery and alternator. If I run any accessory like lights, heater, wipers etc. , the battery dies rapidly. sometimes it will start and sometimes it won't. what could be wrong?

Response From Hammer Time

What is the charging voltage across the battery at idle with no accessories on?

Response From mattguiver

just a little below normal. truck runs as long as I dont use lights etc., If I run any accessories it dies quickly. sometimes it will start right up and others it wont and I have to jump it or pop start it.

Response From Hammer Time

I'm not looking for "normal". I was a digital volt reading.

Response From mattguiver

I'm not a mechanic and I don't recall what the exact reading was. the guy just said it was a little below normal.

Response From Hammer Time

Then you just need to take it back to the guy. I can't help you if you're not even able to take a measurement.

Response From mattguiver

I think he said it was supposed to run at 13.5 and mine was at 12.8. something like that. does that help you?

Response From Hammer Time

Yes, that is exactly what I was looking for and it appear the system isn't charging and the alternator was probably changed for no reason. It needs to be diagnosed correctly now to find the actual reason it isn't charging. 13.5 is acceptable but it really should be a little higher than that. A little over 14 is the norm.

Response From Tom Greenleaf

Matt - I know most folks don't want to get a ton of test stuff. For plain volts they make a thing that just pushes in a cig lighter or power port that at least one I have is remarkably accurate for plain volts. If nothing else for the $10-$12 bucks it's better info than a vehicle's gauges or confirms them or warning lights which you should be getting some icon right around there and bet it drops lower at idle with everything running.

As HT said, it has to be tested out - even new items may be the problem still, -- T

Response From Hammer Time Top Rated Answer

I already replaced battery and alternator.

I think 2 misdiagnosis is enough. Have someone with some electrical knowledge check it out.

Response From nickwarner

Do you have access to a multimeter? With the truck running, put one lead on battery positive and the other lead on the alternator output stud. With the meter set at DC volts, note the reading at idle and at 2000 RPM.
