Muffler fell off of my car--how to fix?

Showing 3 out of 3 Posts
Question From jblane on Muffler fell off of my car--how to fix?

As I was driving home I went over a pothole and the muffler just fell off the bottom of my 1989 Mazda 929. I looked in the rear view mirror, saw it sitting in the street, and stopped to put it in my trunk and drive (noisily) away. So I still have the muffler and I'm wondering if it would be easy for a car novice like me to re-attach it, or if I'll need to go to a mechanic. The muffler itself doesn't look damaged, dented or anything. Thanks for any advice!

Response From asleepatdawheel

I would just go to a muffler shop and have them reattach it... Theres a reason the muffler came off initially and if you need anything related to your exhaust then a muffler shop would be more than able to repair it...

Response From Tom Greenleaf Top Rated Answer

Not sure how that one is installed but would bet by now it's been replaced and just a muffler and tail spout. If a clamped one over the other pipe it will be hard to do without the tools as once installed they don't just slide on so easy without being stretched open where a clamp would make an imprint OR if this was bolted with a gasket type that may just need a gasket and the bolts.

By now it may not be exact original so I too suggest getting some help as the tools would cost a fortune for a one time thing unless you have access to them,

Hey guys, I have found so much help here from you guys and was wondering if you could give me some advice on something I want to do. I want to replace my muffler with a performance grade part. It is all rusted back there and the crome tips are falling off because the bolt rusted. I'm new to the whole car part replacing world and think the muffler would be a good place to start. I dont think I need to replace the catalytic converter and before, just the back muffler. How would I go about this? I also dont want a showy loud muffler, I want a quite but performance sound, where would I go to get one of these and make sure it fit? thanks guys.

Response From Hammer Time

Exhaust work is a pretty specialized business. It requires tools and supplies sometimes not even found in most repair shops. Chances are you will need both a welder and a torch and possible even a pipe e bender. You will also find that most of these exhaust shops work pretty cheap. That's the way I would go with it.

Response From Guest

I have been looking around the internet and have found this bad boy http://www.autoanything.com/exhausts-mufflers/61A2451A-1A2.aspx#customerReview What do you guys think .The reviews said install was short...no welding? Does cat-back mean catolytic converter back? I assume, so does that mean I just bolt to the catalytic convertor and no welding? Thanks guys.

Response From Hammer Time Top Rated Answer

They can claim anything they like. That doesn't always make it true. They don't know what the condition of your system is or what welding has already been done to it. There isn't much you can do with exhaust that doesn't require at least a torch. Old pipes don't just slide off, especially if they have been clamped and crimped. Sometimes you have to make sections of pipe to replace damaged or welded parts.

car smoking

Question From Guest on car smoking

I bought a CX7 Mazda 2007 last year and for the second time, it has smoke coming out of the muffler. Could somebody tell me where the problem is? Do you think I bought a bad car? I think that a new car wouldn't do that to me so soon.

Response From Tom Greenleaf

There are some conditions where moisture can do that temporarily and be normal but worth fast investigation. Check engine coolant and oil for which if either is low or does either or both consume any routinely?

What color is the smoke? Is there residue in the tailpipe?

T

Response From Guest Top Rated Answer

Thank you for replying Tom.
actually the smoke is write , and there is a water residue at the tailpipe. I took the car to the dealer repair shop, and they told me that they had to replace the valve; what bothers me is this is exactly what they told me the first time.

Car Sputtering

Question From imaginethis on Car Sputtering

I have a 94 Mazda Protege with a check engine light on. A month ago it started having problems with starting and the problem has escalated. It will turn over but will not start. If I give it 3-5 min it will get enough oomph & start but it is immediately sputtering upon start. Once I get on the road & build up speed it evens out enough to not die. When I stop at a red light, stop sign or have to reduce speed it begins to loose power & when I press on the gas it is slow to regain power & sputters from the muffler. The problem with starting is intermittent the loss of power & sputtering are almost constant. Aside from this it is using enormous amounts of gas.

I have replaced the fuel filter, O ring seal, Distributor cap, distributor seal and throttle body seal, spark plugs & spark plug wires. On a side note I have a non-working speed sensor. As I know the speed sensor sends signals to many things I thought perhaps their was a chance it was related to that. Any thoughts on what could be going on would be greatly appreciated.

Response From Tom Greenleaf Top Rated Answer

If you know you have a "non working" speed sensor than why are you here?

T

Response From nickwarner

After changing all these parts knowing your check engine light is on, you might've wasted your money. First things first, get the codes scanned and post the results here. That is the first thing you look at. Most parts stores will do it for free. We need the exact code numbers, not just a generic description. Don't let them sell you a bunch of parts based on the code mentioning this or that sensor. It just wastes money. Give us the codes and we will help you figure out the direction you need to go in to diagnose this properly.

Your speedometer sensor doesn't make the engine run badly. Its not going to read anything when you're sitting there parked, is it?

Question From backyardmechanic on 1989 mazda b2600i 2.6 4 cyl loss of performence throttle hesitation

truck starts shuts off turns over the 2nd time and idles the idle is sometimes a severe shutter close to stall point but stays running ive adjust the cap and rotor on a whim ive adjusted the efi carb screw improves a little bit ive shecked my plug wires all have spark just put new plugs in and ive also adjusted the throttle positioning sensor still have severe throttle hesitation when the smallest amount of throttle is applied when throttle is applied motor shutters and wants to stall but comes back after 1 quarter applied throttle any info is help please and thank you

Response From Hammer Time

on a whim ive adjusted the efi carb screw

OK, I'll bite. What's an EFI carb screw since the 2 words are a conflict in themselves.

Response From Discretesignals

Probably means the air bypass screw for setting min air rate.

Check engine light on?

Response From nickwarner Top Rated Answer

EFI carb screws have a very delicate procedure to adjust and can cause the issue you have if not done properly.

1. muffler belt must be at proper tension and timed to 13 degrees advance at 60 degrees celcius

2. blinker fluid reservoir must be within spec and quality fluid used(I prefer Dr. Snake brand for my truck)

3. with the engine at idle, use a left handed metric crescent wrench and tighten screw to 15 foot-meters

4. back off 1/4 turn

5. if this procedure is followed exactly you will get 50mpg and the truck will never break down again.

Response From nickwarner

Its no fun to go fishing if there aren't any bites. Damn. Back to drinking for me.

Response From Tom Greenleaf

LMAO Nick. If pic don't show I'll try again but who knows?

Tom

Response From Tom Greenleaf

With all due respect stop adjusting things you know nothing about as you are just making a possible fix that much harder,
