1990 Plymouth Voyager 3.3 motor mt

Question From Guest on 1990 Plymouth Voyager 3.3 motor mt

Does anyone know which way is up on the front motor mount for the 1990 3.3 engine? The mount is square, but mounts like a diamond configuration. The metal receiver for the through bolt is imbedded in the top of a triangle of rubber. Does the triangle of rubber go in the NE position, viewed from underneath on the passenger side, with the weight of the engine pulling down on it. Or does it go with the triangle in the south west position, with the weight of the engine pressing it down. That would seem the logical position, but the one in it was in the hanging down position and the metal ferrule had pulled out of the rubber. It seems the kick of the engine does torque the engine so that it would push against the torque in the NE position, but just hanging there, it would tend to want to pull out of the rubber. If you know for sure, I would appreciate it. I have the factory manual and the picture is not definitive, nor are the instructions.
Thanks,
Terry

Dear Jim,
Thanks, but no, it does not show the orientation of the front motor mount insert.
If you look up on line a front motor mount for a 1990 Plymouth Grand Voyager with 3.3 liter engine, you will see what it looks like. The triangle with the rubber could go one of four ways and there are no instructions. I just am not sure that the one I pulled out was done right. It is easier to put it in with the triangle on the bottom, to move it to the top you have to jack the engine up some (from the broken mount position I took it off in).
Thanks.

Response From Double J

Guess:
It looks like it might have locator pieces molded into the rubber and may fit into the bracket one way.

This what your talking about..

IT almost looks like it would go just like it is in the picture here.

Response From tcwagner Top Rated Answer

Dear Jim,
Thanks for your attention to my problem. The locators are just stops to keep if from sliding through and there is no place for them to fit into or lock. You have to turn this assembly, as pictured, so it is up on one corner, the question is which one. I am pretty sure it will not go in the NW or SE configuration, viewed from under the car on the passenger side, because that would be against the natural torque of the engine. but is the through bolt hanging from the top or coming up from the bottom. From the passenger side looking up the engine torques counter clockwise.
Sorry it is so difficult to explain.
With thanks,
Terry

Response From Double J

Ok...Just like I stated but it does have to be turned, Sorry!

The V shape points toward the engine from the radiator
In other words...looking at that picture and turning it to the right ,clockwise...

Response From tcwagner

dear Jim,
Thanks for the info on the motor mount, sorry for the delay in getting back with you. I mounted it as you suggested and all seems to be going fine. On another note, I just found out yesterday that the passenger inside tie rod, that mounts onto the rack, is bad. I need to replace it and I found a place where I am staying this week that sells new suspension parts ridiculously cheap. I bought the tie rod and the rubber accordion boot for 11.55 total. The last one I replaced had a drive pin in it, this has a allen screw. I have seen a tool you can rent that allows you to screw the thing off from the outside without removing the rack. Any warnings on the use of one, other than removing the allen screw or pin in the old one?
ON another note, how do you tell if the driver side motor mount is bad? I have a pop at times in the frame when I first turn the car on and move it or hit a bump hard. I have thought it could be aframe bushings, the tie rod and ball joints are good and the bearings are fine.
Thanks again,
Terry

1993 Plymouth Laser Turbo manual transmission - tires turning the same way.

Question From Nunya on 1993 Plymouth Laser Turbo manual transmission - tires turning the same way.

Year: 1993
Model: Plymouth Laser Turbo
Engine: 2.0
Mileage: 168,000

When I turn, the differential isn't allowing the tires to turn correctly. Is there a common reason or cause for this, or does anyone have experience with this specific model? Do I just need a new tranny?

Response From Hammer Time

You're going to have to describe the issue in a little more detail than that.

Response From Nunya

sorry about that, its kinda hard to explain, so bare with me. i bought this car as a project car there for any conditions were unknown, long story short i replaced the engine and trans out of a junkyard, the car i got the motor and trans out of was wrecked in the side and rear the front was still in tact. i got the motor and trans installed and from the beginning i knew there was a problem with the steering, i replaced the axles first didnt help i then replaced the lower control arms ball joint and sway bar links still no difference i am able to drive the car but it pulls hard to the left and the tires chirp and jump around, kinda like a posse rear end would do in a sharp turn. so i took it to an alignment shop and they were able to align the steering for me, however, when i left the shop it was still doing the same, so they pulled it back in and lifted it up by the frame and checked the rack and pinion and it checked out to be be in good shape, they continued to trouble shoot for me, and the best they could come up with was the the differential was not allowing one side to slip while the other side was being turned, basically while turning one side the other side cannot be held back and both tires will turn in the same direction,

Response From Hammer Time

Are you sure it's not a limited slip differential because it sounds like chattering clutches.

Response From Nunya

i am not sure, the only thing i know about transmissions are how to replace them, but because these trans are hard to come by, if it were chattering clutches, is this repairable,

Response From Hammer Time

That would be easy. Just chage the gear oil and add a bottle of friction modifier that you can buy at any auto parts store.

Response From Nunya

Ok I changed the gear oil and added the friction modifier, it seems to be better but not completely was wondering if there is a certain amount of miles before the friction modifier does its thing or is it instantly all its gonna do

Response From Hammer Time

Yes, it could take a few miles. As said earlier, make the your tires match and your brakes aren't dragging.

Response From Nunya

i took a 94 eclipse 2.0 turbo and i replaced the turbo exhaust with a non turbo exhaust, i also replaced the intake and throttle body from turbo to non turbo, i replaced the idle air control motor (new) it idle rough when cold, and gets better when warm, however, it idle at about 1100rpms and not real smooth. the check engine light does not come on.what can i do do to get the idle down and lean it out, the smell is very rich.

Response From Hammer Time

Most of us are not much on mods here. Who knows what conflicts you could have now with the computer.

Response From Nunya

yea that whole computer thing is a myth i have the one out of the turbo car and i have the one out of the non turbo car and they both work the same with completely different numbers, like i said it runs like a raped ape just dont idle like it should

Response From Nunya

ok thank you and will let you know how it goes.

Response From Nunya

that would be easy not my luck, but i will try it, thanks! one last thing i was unaware that Manuel trans had clutches other than the actual clutch disc, is it possible that something is broken inside and the car would still drive

Response From Discretesignals

Is this AWD?

Response From Nunya

it is not an awd

Response From Discretesignals Top Rated Answer

i am able to drive the car but it pulls hard to the left and the tires chirp and jump around, kinda like a posse rear end would do in a sharp turn.

If it has or had limited slip, it shouldn't chatter when your going straight. The reason is that both axles are turning the same speed, so the side and pinion gears in the carrier are not turning. The only thing that could cause it to chatter and burn up a set of limited slip clutches is if one front wheel has a different diameter than the other front wheel.

Pulling to the left is strange. You get the vehicle in the air and rotate the wheels by hand? How about the motor mounts? Maybe the engine and transaxle aren't sitting right and throwing off the CV angles?

Response From Nunya

the tires only chirp when im turning when driving straight it rolls fine other than the pulling there is no noise at all from the trans only from the tires

Response From Discretesignals

Does it pull only when your accelerating?

Response From Nunya

no it pulls as soon as i let go of the steering wheel

Response From Discretesignals

I honestly never heard of a transaxle causing a steering pull. Torque steer usually only happens while accelerating or on deceleration. Usually what causes pulling is brake calipers hanging, alignment problem, or radial pull from tires.

Response From Nunya

is the the differential oil in a separate case than the trans oil

Response From Hammer Time

Probably not, since it's a manual transmission.

Response From Discretesignals

It's really hard for us to give you an accurate prognosis. All we can do is ask you questions in hopes that you'll find something wrong. Someone is going to have to really inspect everything under there to see what the heck is going on.

Response From Hammer Time

Or maybe a limited slip with different size tires as suggested earlier.

Response From Nunya

is the differential repairable/replaceable without rebuilding the trans

Response From Hammer Time

i was unaware that Manuel trans had clutches other than the actual clutch disc

We're talking about the differential, not the transmission.

Response From Nunya

were is the differential located

Response From Discretesignals

in the transaxle

panel blowers work intermittently

Question From lynnnny on panel blowers work intermittently

1986 Plymouth Reliant SE (4 door) not sure of engine size at the moment, It has 75,000 original miles

My problem is 2-fold, My a/c is somewhat working. It blows cold air through the defroster and the floor vents, but intermittently through the panel vents. Its kind of hit and miss. Sometimes they start working when you stop and sometime when you are driving down the road. They go on and off. Also when I come to a stop with the air on the car vibrates terribly. I put it in park and it stops, I turn off the air and it stops?????? Any ideas?

Response From jjoedduque

lynnnny, did you find your problem with the blower working intermittently. Was it a vacuum leak? My Dodge Ram 2500 Diesel Pick up has started doing the. The blower sometimes just stops and then starts again. Let me know please.

Response From Hammer Time

The mode selection is done through a series of air doors that are operated by vacuum. When there is either a partial or total loss of vacuum, the system will default to either defrost or on some vehicles, heat. Acceleration can also have an effect on the doors for the same reason.

Look under the hood for a small black plastic hose coming through the firewall. Follow it to the vacuum source looking for any breaks, cracks or leaks. Also follow any other lines that branch off because they may go to a vacuum reservoir (storage tank) and a leak there will cause the same problem. Using a vacuum gauge to determine if you have full vacuum at any given point is the best way to find it. You can cut into the line anywhere and splice it back together with a piece of vacuum hose. Find the broken line, you found your problem.

Response From lynnnny

Thank you Hammertime. It does have some pretty old hoses, hopefully that will solve it. By the way, would that also cause the vibration of the car?

Response From Hammer Time Top Rated Answer

That may be tired motor mounts.

Response From lynnnny

Hmm? just replaced those but will check anyway! Thank you for your help! You're the best!

Question From deviantbeast on 1975 Plymouth Scamp (advice wanted)

I am new to the car world, fresh out of the computer world. I acquired a 1975 Scamp and would like to learn how to work on cars, but nobody around has been able to help me. I have plans for its and know a little bit about cars, but i have a lot of questions including converting a few things for a "new" engine to put in. If anybody could at least answer some questions, i would be grateful.

Response From CAM80Z28

FIRST ONCE YOU DESIDE WAT ENGINE YOU ARE GOING TO USE ..YOU HAVE TO CHANGE THE K MEMBER (REMBER ITS A CHRYSLER )

FIRST ONCE YOU DESIDE WAT ENGINE YOU ARE GOING TO USE ..YOU HAVE TO CHANGE THE K MEMBER (REMBER ITS A CHRYSLER )

Why don't you use spell check before posting so you look like you have a little intelligence.

Response From deviantbeast

Well we wanted to put a 318 in it but its an electric start, i also wanted to know if the transmission would be ok with this or if i am going to need to get a new one for this engine. The car itself has less than 60k miles so everything is still "good" in a sense. Another question would be how would the frame "feel" about this bigger engine.

Response From nickwarner Top Rated Answer

Less than 60k? Don't mess with the thing or kill the original value. Put a 318 in it with electronic controls and you need a pro to install it with a stand alone programmer tuned on a dyno.

Cars have used electric start for about 90 years. You haven't got a reason there.

If you do a motor swap to a non-original motor that has more power than the original and is a significant amount of year difference you will likely need a trans to go with it. Also note that the motor mounts, trans mount, crossmember, driveshaft, shift linkage, suspension and about 50 other unforseen things will likely need to be changed in order to accomodate the swap.

This could be a neat project but it needs a pro touch to be safe and that costs money. You could be out over a grand in exhaust alone to do a swap. If a novice at best I would leave this alone and enjoy that it is original and worth more that way. If you want to modify it I think you need to hire someone who has a true understanding of what this will take and know that upfront that a project car is a hole in your garage to throw all your money into.

Response From Tom Greenleaf

deviantbeast : If you think cars were manual start in even the 1940s or 50s go back to computer programming. This car would almost certainly be either a 225 (slant six) or the 318 (V8) from new and no Chrysler cars had frames - not even the Imperial! Same unit body IMO for this for either engine, mounts would be different, wiring, cooling system and not much else. Torsion bar front springs if you will can be adjusted with a pair of pliers. Rear leafs you can add a leaf if it sags.

If not rusted the "frame" which is like all just strong parts welded to the floor pan is strong enough but by 1975 both engines were pigs and a bit lame so leave it alone. Frame as you call it where torsion bars twist to suspend front would snap off if rusty - a deadly problem. Engines could take a hand grenade and still run.

A few common but easy problems on the whole era of these that were around like litter.

Straight forward practical simple cars with almost no difficult ordinary maintenance. Leave it original as Nick says,
