clanging blazer

Question From siarninerfan on clanging blazer

i have a 1993 chevrolet blazer and when i accelerate i hear a very loud clanging noise in the rear of the motor(sounds like ball bearings rolling around in a tin can)it caused a severe leak in the rear main oil seal. what could have caused this??

Response From brbettge Top Rated Answer

noises travel and don't sound right when you sit in the drivers seat. A loud clanging noise when you accelerate sounds to me like a bad motor mount. when you put your engine under load - as when accelerating - and you have a bad motor mount (usually on the drivers side) the motor will actually lift up and the fan blades will hit the fan "guard" on the front of the engine. this causes a loud clanging noise. It can also cause rear main leaks simply due to the stress put on the rear main seal when the engine "torques".

Vibration in Geo prizm

Question From chadjordan93 on Vibration in Geo prizm

Year of vehicle-1994
Make of vehicle (Chevrolet/Geo)
Model of vehicle (Prizm )
Engine size (2.0)
Mileage/Kilometers-207,000

Need help trying to figure out a problem. I did some research and they all say tires or broken engine mount but neither is the cause for the vibration at idle and high speeds. My car vibrates when im idling or going over 65, just put new tires on and Ive had the engine mount checked, the oil has always been changed when time and there is no exhaust or body damage that is known. So if any one has solved or had this problem and could lend a word that would be great
Thanks,

Response From Mr.scotty

So it shakes when the vehicle is in park or in gear sitting still?
If it only did it while moving or just sitting still it probably would be easier to figure out.
Did it do it before the new tires?

Response From chadjordan93

it shakes when its in park, neutral, and at any speeds really, but the higher in speed you get the worst it gets.
its done it since ive had it, before and after new tires.
no wrecks before and im only the 4th owner

Response From Mr.scotty

And all the mounts are good?
Transmission,engine, and suspension?
Are you sure the car just doesn't have a miss fire?
No check engine light rite?

Response From chadjordan93

And all the mounts are good? yes
Transmission, engine, and suspension? yes, yes and im sure since they didnt say they were bad when i got new tires, i asked them to check out that stuff
Are you sure the car just doesn't have a miss fire? pretty sure it doesn't, because if it did the vibration wouldn't be this consistent( from what i know, which isnt alot)
No check engine light rite?no lights on at all, this is the best running car for its age ive seen just the vibration

Response From Mr.scotty

only other thing I can think of off of my head rite now is the harmonic balancer pulley.
If this is bent or something it could cause the car to shake when moving or not moving.
If that is whats wrong with it, it can make alot of big problems. have it checked out rite away.

Response From Tom Greenleaf

That's a lot of miles on this pup. I'm with Mr. Scotty to check the harmonic balancer and other belt driven items. If no check engine light and might not maybe a cylinder balance and compression check is in order now if other things check out.

In that it can do this sitting still wheels and suspension item really can't be the cause. There are more than one mount to engine/trans to verify good. Sometimes exhaust may cause issues too with a big word - a resonance frequency from bad parts/hanger making the system whip around. My own car has balancers (counter weights) on exhaust to control that! Gotta check all of it IMO,

T

Response From Mr.scotty

Yeah.., At this point it would be anything that rotate when the engine is running or a mount.
Like you said theres no way it's a suspension bushing or mount.

The exhaust hangers are a good point.

Response From Tom Greenleaf

Mr. Scotty - anyone: Ever see that brand new bridge (forget where) that just went nuts (pics of it with cars on it then total collapse) as there was no control of vibrations which any engine takes into consideration too. If exhaust can wobble around just so it's possible it gets to shaking. It's not the highest thing on the list but something to rule out IMO,

T

(edit) Found the YouTube of that bridge and what can happen with resonance if not controlled - was 1940 - the Tacoma bridge.

Should show (short version) from this..............

Response From Mr.scotty

I know hard to believe it huh..

Response From speed Top Rated Answer

in my opinion id take it to an actual shop, not a tire place to get the mounts checked out. i work in the express lube, we do "visual" check on components but its not an actual check, i would not expect a person changing the tires to catch a faulty motor mount.

Response From zmame

could be a number of things
tune up
timing
vacume leak
motor mounts
or a combination of these things

63 Impala - Surges when entering new gear

Question From a1handy on 63 Impala - Surges when entering new gear

I am restoring a 1963 Chevrolet Impala SS. The car has a 327 engine and a four speed manual transmission. The engine seems to run fine but when I first disengage the clutch in any new gear (1-4) the car surges or lurches until it seems to gain momentum in that particular gear. Once it passes this it runs or drives fine until I have to shift gears again. I suspect the problem is somehow related to the clutch but would appreciate any feedback.

Response From Discretesignals

Do you mean when you engage the clutch after shifting into the next gear the vehicle surges under acceleration?

Response From Tom Greenleaf Top Rated Answer

Guess: Are motor mounts good? Do you have enough free-play at top of clutch pedal? Those two on my mind. FYI, not enough "freeplay" and it will slip with some load or real bad with a lot of load,

99 chevy priszm, engine light blinking on & off while car running

Question From faye on 99 chevy priszm, engine light blinking on & off while car running

My engine light has been on for a year, I had it checked and replaced one of the coils at that time. 3 days ago I started it up and the engine light started to blink and it was running rough. My mechanic checked the codes and it said misfire on 1 & 4. He said my spark plugs were bad (2 of them) but we replaced all 4. car still running rough & engine light still blinking, he said I needed to replace the other coil pack. Replaced it and he checked the wires it is still running rough with engine light blinking. He said there was oil on the plugs and he used some kind of cleaner to get the oil off the engine. I left my top off when i put oil in it. for one day. The engine shakes when you put in in gear, in neutral and park it doesn't. It's burning gasoline like crazy and its slow to pick up...takes a while to get it to get the speed up. The person behind me is blowing his horn it takes so long! Now he says I need motor mounts also. And that I can drive it. I read somewhere that it could be my converter and that I shouldn't be driving it. Help I drive my car all day long from house to house and on the freeway. I need it.

Sounds like this guy has done enough guessing and throwing parts at it.

It's time to do some testing for sure. With that kind of mileage you need to start with a complete compression test.

1984 Pontiac J2000 Sunbird- High idle after engine swap

Question From JesseLD on 1984 Pontiac J2000 Sunbird- High idle after engine swap

Recently I swapped the engine out of my 1984 chevrolet cavalier into my 1984 Pontiac J2000 Sunbird. The Sunbird originally came with a 1.8L FI 4 cyl. turbo enginewhere as the cavalier had a 2.0L FI 4 cyl. engine. Swapped them out, changed out the ECM computer, disconnected the turbo gauge, changed out the wiring harness with the exception of the wiring underneath the dash as it it only seemed to have a couple differences that I had taken care of. It fired right up... everything was working, the only problem being the idle. In park the idle would hover around 3000 drop it into any other gear it would drop to 2500. I determined that the IAC valve was the problem for the most part after swapping it out with one that I had pulled from a parts car and it dropped to around 2000 in park and 1200 in any other gear. Though better I would like to find a way to drop the idle lower as it is still way higher than it used to be in the cavalier. One thought I had was that the IAC valve I threw in was not in the best condition, another possibility I came up with was the wiring may be off some where and I had over looked it... which may explain why the original IAC valve went out in the first place. If anyone has any ideas feel free to post them.

Solved the idle problem. Frayed cable going to the throttle was holding it open a bit. Anyways, the idle on that particular engine has no way to manually adjust without modifying some of the parts. Now I get to have fun trying to figure out why it is over heating! The engine swap itself was painless, motor mounts lined up perfectly, all of the components not mounted to the engine were identical. Only parts I had to swap aside from the engine were the CV joints, wiring harness and ecm computer. I suspect the heating issue is caused by the lack of power going to the fan for some reason or another so that should be a straight forward fix. Thanks for the assist, if for some reason this over heating issue becomes a pain to solve I may be back soon.

Jesse; Make sure that you don't have manifold vacuum going to the EGR. Just a thought.

Response From autojoe

some of the old throttle bodys had a plug that could be removed with a awl or pick and then under that was a throttle stop screw that could be adjusted. That may be a option.Have you checked for any vacuum leaks.some thoughts.I know you should not have to do that.

This is trouble from the get go IMO. Two different vehicles and engines - egad! You may have a throttle motor type thing that you can adjust - not sure - this is a creation - meaning not standard by any book now,
