Outside Driver's Door mirror replacement info

Showing 4 out of 4 Posts
Question From martin1967 on Outside Driver's Door mirror replacement info

Can anyone tell me how difficult it is to replace the driver's side outdoor mirror. Mine was smacked off by a passing car while parked. Its on a Saturn 2001 S series. The mirror is not power anything, just manual remote from inside door. Will I have to remove the inside door cover to do this? And if anyone could tell me if this is a difficult job that really needs a garage to do it.
Thank you.

Response From DanD Top Rated Answer

Yes you have to remove the inner panel to get at the mirrors retaining bolts or the adjusting mechanism, at least on the one I did anyway (I don’t remember what year it was). Not a difficult job but it may be a bit of a stressful one when it comes to removing the door panel. They love to hide the screws and after that the “pop out clips" at times feel like you’re going to break before they “pops out”.
I don’t know your ability but you should be able to do it, just take your time and don’t get too aggressive when you want to rip the panel off and throw it across your yard. LOL
Dan.

Response From Tom Greenleaf

If it's just the glass you can replace just that cheap. Just broke one myself putting a full size plow truck back in the garage. Wicked tight with the plow on.

Would love to sell you something from this site but it isn't worth the shipping. Again if just glass check out www.rbinc.com for a $10 -$12 dollar replacement. If you need the housing you probably will need the dealer for parts. Hang on to your wallet if so! T

coolant leaking from saturn engine

Question From lucivanpelt on coolant leaking from saturn engine

i have a 1998 saturn sl2 i have a coolant leak i dont think it is from a hose. When i looked under the car it is coming from where the pulley is on the passenger side. what could it be? the leak is getting faster with time.

havent tried anything yet because i dont know where to start... im kinda new at this

Response From Hammer Time Top Rated Answer

Your going to have to examine it closer with the system under pressure, probably with a mirror to pinpoint the leak. Sounds like your in the water pump area.

Response From lucivanpelt

how would i go about doing that?

Response From Hammer Time

You have to use a cooling system pressure tester.

Response From alienshadow

If you arent sure better take it to a radiator shop.. You dont want to do more harm than good..Another note I wouldnt drive it until its fixed if that leak is getting worse then its only a matter of time before it pours out...

A/C and Heater on 2003 Saturn L200

Question From dmartin402 on A/C and Heater on 2003 Saturn L200

A?c and heater will not work.
The letters "OC" appear on display. What does this indicate?

Response From kev2

OC display, OK from memory I believe this is "Open Circuit"....on of the sensors is open, shorted etc- look at the ambient first I remember reading something.

Response From dmartin402

Thank you for your help. I have found the two wires that go to the outside temperature sensor on the driver's side front bumper to be unconnected. Do you think it matters which wire goes where on the sensor? There are two wires. One yellow and one black

Response From Tom Greenleaf

Automobile anything wiring usually CAN'T be put together wrong. Something like it doesn't fit, plug has a nub that doesn't allow it wrong. Look for that. If it was replaced with some generic connectors I hope the wires go to the same color.
This would explain the OC you are reading from anything I could find. No clue if putting that back wrong will cause harm or so default to don't until sure,

T

Response From dmartin402

Thank u T
I switched the wires and unhooked battery hoping to reset. It worked for about 30 seconds and then went back to OC

Response From Tom Greenleaf

I'm on a real guessing goose chase myself with this one. First - don't do TWO things at once then check as you don't know which did anything. Why erase memory by disconnecting the battery?
As long as I'm guessing try to get an OHM reading from the sensor itself unplugged - just the sensor.
Whatever temp it is note that. Your call to wait for another ambient temp or just easy with a blow dryer to warm it up some and see if it reads another # for an OHM reading.
That's just what temp sensing things usually do is change how much current can go thru it. If broken I don't think temp with change the sensor's OHM reading.
Still don't understand why you can hook this up two ways and may not matter but not sure of that. If located where you said it may be a replacement job now?

Any clues to help? Are connectors some hardware store stuff or look original? If NOT original I'd check if wires were smashed in some even minor accident and fixed or rubbing somewhere. Why do you think you found it disconnected to begin with?
Said out of the gate not real sure of this set up and how it has any control over heat and A/C but is listed.
OK - try this: Almost everything will work with a defrost request. I'm just groping for ideas.
You already disconnected battery once so I guess do that again and see if you get your 30 seconds grace period again if only for info on that.
Mostly I really don't know and if this was in front of my I'd be hunting down info about how it's supposed to work and why.
So far doesn't seem to make much sense it cares about the temp outside for the temp requested inside unless also info for another control at the same time?

T

Response From dmartin402

Tom
I did what you suggested. I checked the outside temperature sensor with a ohm meter. Using a hairdryer, I did get a different reading so I assume the sensor is working.
I put the sensor back on, unconnected the battery and got the same results. The display shows that everything is working. After about 30 seconds, the display reads -40 and then goes almost immediately to OC ext F Don't know if I have said this before, but the blower works .
Any further ideas are greatly appreciated.

Response From Discretesignals

If you unplug the outside temperature sensor with the ignition on, what is the voltage on the yellow wire terminal in the connector? Don't shove your meter lead down into the terminal or it will spread it open causing a poor connection.

Response From dmartin402

I discovered today that the heater does work. I can even adjust the temperature even though the display still reads OC.
As far as I can tell, the a/c will not come on.
The voltage reading on the yellow wire is 5.11 with the ignition switch on.
Any more ideas would be greatly appreciated.

Response From Discretesignals

That is good you have 5 volts on that circuit. That means the climate control panel 5 volt regulator is working. Have you tried resetting the panel by disconnecting the battery for several minutes since you got the outside temperature sensor functional again? OC might actually be 0c or zero degrees Celsius since the sensor was unplugged.

There are a couple of preliminary checks you should do such as making sure the ac system has enough static pressure to trigger the low pressure switch. You will also need to see if there are any codes stored in the HVAC module. That requires the use of the factory or enhanced scan tool. You may need to take it to a repair shop that has the equipment and knowledge to diagnose it.

Response From Tom Greenleaf Top Rated Answer

Kinda wish it hadn't done anything as now that suggests sensor works but signal doesn't make it or the receiving end has the fault.

At this juncture I'd be lost to get a specific this exact vehicle only subscription to AllDataDIY.com for the most detailed diagrams you'll get, send it out to an A/C specialty shop or try to chase the two wires to a plug checking for continuity along any and each plug.
Is this sensor on inside mirror or outside by chance? Did mirror get broken or fall off that you know of? If so that would be an area to look first.
Maybe someone here has some more info or tests you could do and info. I don't. Know that this is a volunteer FREE site and I'm done with biz so not buying info if I don't already have it to do this.

Wait a bit and keep trying or pick plan "B" for the fix. Best I can do from here,

Tom

Response From Tom Greenleaf

Can't give you tons of help with that one but think if climate controlled it can't read what the sensor says probably on side or rear view mirror. Thinks it's -40F or C. about the same doesn't deal with that for either.

Any recent work or events that might have disturbed anything?

Best I can offer for now,

Question From james.garrett12 on 97 Saturn sl1 will crank but wont start

The car has sit in the same spot for about a year without being touched. I replaced the battery, spark pugs, and air filter. Checked all the fluids and added fuel and engine oil cleaner, havent gotten to the oil change yet. Vehicle has power and starter will crank but will not move the engine at all. Could it be an ignition switch, or coil? Not too sure what to look for now please help.

Response From Discretesignals

The starter spins, but the crank doesn't move?

Response From james.garrett12

yes the start sounds fine but wont crank the engine

Response From Discretesignals

Then there is problem with the starter's bendix one way clutch or the drive isn't being thrown out. Need to remove starter and have tested. Inspect the flywheel/flexplate teeth too.

Response From james.garrett12

Ok thanks, will check back in afterwards

Response From Discretesignals

We'll keep the lights on.

Response From james.garrett12

So the old starter was bad i replaced it, did an oil change, and checked the teeth on the flywheel and im still having the same problem. What can i do now

This isn't making any sense at all. You replaced the starter, you say your ring gear teeth are not damaged, the starter motor is indeed spinning and your engine is not? Impossible. The only two things that I can imagine are happening are either you actually do have stripped teeth in the ring gear or your motor is locked up and that means the starter motor isn't spinning. Which one is happening?

Response From james.garrett12

and yes the starter is spinning

and yes the starter is spinning

Is the belt moving when the starter spins?

Response From james.garrett12

no belts are moving its just the starter thats spinning.

Response From Sidom

Get a breaker bar/1/2 ratchet & socket that fits the bolt on the crankshaft and then rotate the crankshaft 180° to see if the starter will "catch" when you try to start it.....

Response From james.garrett12

Is there a way to know if it catches?

Response From Sidom

lol.....well this has been a very confusing post to whether this is a cranks/no start (meaning the engine turns over but won't start/run) or a no crank/no start.

Since no pulleys are moving when the starter is engaged......This is a no crank/no start.

It's pretty simple, if this is just a case of a bad spot on the ring gear, you rotate the ring gear (via the crankshaft) to a different spot with good teeth. Have a helper turn the key and watch the pulleys, if they now move when the engine is cranked, you have a bad spot on the ring gear....

If they don't move then you have crazy bad luck of have a starter with a bad bendix and getting a replacement with a bad bendix

a sidenote on a bad spot on the ring gear....usually rotating the ring gear will get the engine to start because once the engine starts spinning, it has enough momentum to get past the "bad spot" and continue to crank the engine until it starts....
The backyard parking lot method of starting these cars is trying to move the ringgear past the bad spot by using the serp belt or another pulley to rotae the crankpulley

Response From james.garrett12

So i attempted to start the car by rotating the ring gear through the crank shaft pully and it was visable that the flywheel was rotating. Once i tried to start the car it gave what sounded like the engine a half second of life but attempt failed. I started over and tried again a couple more times and again no engine sound. Looks like Im back where i started although havent had a helper to look at the flywheel yet to see if it rotates while turning the key. Could it be the new starter i got is bad?

Any suggestions are welcome

Response From Sidom

If turning the flywheel got the engine to crank for a second and then stop, that isn't a good sign. It sounds like you may have a bad spot on your ring gear. Try moving it a little less and see what that does....

Pull the starter out and get a flashlight and a piece of chalk. Mark the flywheel (So you'll know when you have gone all the way around) and have your helper slowly turn the crank while you look at the teeth on the ring gear.

Now the teeth don't have to be totally gone. If there is big spots where you can see that they worn 1/2 way back or more. That would be more than enough to cause this problem...

It's possible you got a bad starter. Since you have it out, you could warranty it. Now the chances of getting 3 starters having the exact same problem is getting into to the same range as winning the lotto....very unlikely

Just a footnote to keep things clear since there was a term issue......Manual trannys use flywheels Auto trannys use flexplates. Both have ring gears on them and the terms are interchangable until you go to the parts store to order parts...

Response From james.garrett12

So I checked the flexplate and the teeth are not in perfect shape but still are in good enough condition. I rotated the crankshaft pully again and finally starter caught. Was able to crank but no start. Tried some ether and the engine came to life for 3 seconds and when out. Checked under the hood and found that smell of bad fuel so i guess the next step is purge and fuel filter change? Is there anything else i should do?

Response From Sidom

Well since we're working with a marginal at best flexplate it would problably be best to nail this down as quick as possible with the least amount of cranking....

It runs on ether so the ign should be good.
Next best thing to do would be to get a fuel pressure gauge and see if you are getting fuel pressure & its within specs....You can check the pressure by just cycling the key from the off to on position. Everytime you turn it to the on position, the pump with run for 2 seconds & then power down if it doesn't sense rpms.

If you don't have a gauge, call around to different parts stores, some of them have loaner programs...

Response From james.garrett12

So long story short checked the fuel lines and found that the fuel pump was bad and the tank needed a cleaning. So i replaced the fuel pump and cleaned the tank out and when that was done i added some fuel and, I cranked the car to hear the car roar back to life. So thanks for all yalls help.

Thanks for the follow up and glad its running for you. Going to lock this thread to stop spam and hijacking. If you want to reopen it later just send a PM to any mod.

Response From Hammer Time

the teeth are not in perfect shape but still are in good enough condition.

And what are you basing that opinion on? Any damage is too much.

Response From james.garrett12

Pictures, teeth depth so forth. Theres no damage the plate just doesnt look brand new. Trying to stay within budget and get the car running first.

Response From Hammer Time

If there are any pieces of the teeth missing at all, it will just continue to ruin starters.

Response From Hammer Time

Sure, it could but with an accurate description of what is actually happening, we can't have any idea.

Response From james.garrett12

Ok then will give it a try.
Thanks again.

Response From james.garrett12

couldnt get the best view of the teeth due to the starter being mounted partly in the trans axle i felt the teeth and they seemed fine. I might have been feeling the wrong thing but the teeth on the bottom portion of the fly wheel look fine.

Response From nickwarner Top Rated Answer

Feeling it with your fingers leaves too much to chance. A flashlight and a small mirror would've gone a long way. Your teeth don't need to be completely sheared off to not engage the starter well enough to turn the engine over. If its one bad spot that you're on then the other areas would look fine. This isn't a stick shift by chance, is it? That would make life much easier to find out whats happening if it is.

Response From james.garrett12

sadly no its an automatic and if its the teeth that will be a hugh problem. i would have to drop the trans axle just to get to them.

Response From Sidom

Hmmm....I think we better be clear on our terms here....something doesn't sound right

Crank...means spins the engine over, the crankshaft is moving all the pulleys are spinning
Start...means fires up, engine starts running on it's own.......some use the term "crank" as start....

so you turn the key to the start position....The engine begins to "crank" via the starter and then if all is good...it "starts"

In you early post, you said the start spins but the engine wouldn't "crank"....This would mean you could "hear" the starter motor but the crankshaft wouldn't be moving, no belts would be spinning, the engine would be sitting there with absolutely no movement other than the starter making a "spinning noise"

Question From texaskreek06 on 01 Saturn L200 Multiple Electrical Problems

My 2001 Saturn L200 has the following problems-4cyl, Automatic trans, power locks/windows/mirrors, factory cd player.

1. Check engine light is on but nobody's computer can get any codes from the car. I checked all the fuses under the hood and on the panels by both the driver & passenger doors and they all are good.

2. Front head lights will not turn on, but the daytime running, parking, and brights work just fine. Bulbs are good.

3. Only the speedometer and the fuel gauge light up when the lights are on, the tach and everything else don't

4. All the power options on the vehicle work except the power locks on the drivers rear side, however the power windows work just fine on that side.

5. The a/c clutch will not engage, not sure if this is related or not. But I can stick a long screwdriver on the clutch and turn it just fine. Any help would be greatly appreciated. I am at a loss on these problems and don't even know where to begin.
