Question From MADMIKE on torque converter fliud low on 2003 mercury mountaineer.

I have 2003 mercury mountaineer. I think my torque converter fliud is low? is there a way to bring it back up to level with out droping the trans? It does not have a fill tube?

Response From Hammer Time

The torque converter doesn't have it's own fluid. It shares the same trans fluid as the rest of the transmission.
It is not however easy to check that. It requires some special tools

Here is the procedure

Response From MADMIKE

THANKS FOR THE INFO. I TOOK A SECOND LOOK. THIS WHAT I SEE. THE TORQUE CONVERTER IS LOW OF FLUID. BUT WHEN I OPENED THE FLUID LEVEL PLUG THE FLUID POURED OUT. IS IT PASSITBLE THAT THE FILTER IS kLUGED SO ALL THE FLUID IS IN THE TRANNY.

Response From Hammer Time

I don't know where you are getting your ideas from but no, that's not likely. Why are you blaming fluid anyway? What is it doing.?

Response From MADMIKE Top Rated Answer

There is a metal nose between the block and tranny housing. Like a fan bade hitting the sides. But not all the time? When at idle it seems to go away. For the most part. There is also a leak there.

Response From Hammer Time

Forget the oil idea. That sounds more like loose converter bolts or a cracked flywheel.

Response From MADMIKE

I will check it in the morning. I will take off the cover between the block and tranny and take a look. But why did the fluid come out from the level check plug. When i open it. I did't add any. When it's at level it stop coming out rigth. ??

Response From Hammer Time

Don't be concerned with the oil. You were just checking it wrong.

You may not be able to see enough of the flywheel to see any cracks because it happens up near the center but you can at least check for loose bolts. If you find any, you can assume the flywheel holes have been elongated and it will have to be changed.

Response From MADMIKE

Thankyou for your help! I greatly appreciate it!!!!!! I just moved to florida and i have no cash. I hope it's just that the converter is loose. That would be to easy! Let you tomorrow the out come!!

Response From Hammer Time

Did you read what I just said?

If the converter bolts are found to be loose, the flywheel will have to be replaced because the bolt holes will be elongated.

What part of Florida are you in?

Response From MADMIKE

I checked the fluid level using the level plug. One more time, the trans fluid poured out. From my understanding if the level is right you should only get a drop or two. But it poured out. This tell me that the fluid is not circulating fluid going into trans put back in to the converter, Or not enough. To take a look at the fly wheel and converter. I have to remove the starter to take a look.

Response From Sidom

You did check the fluid with the truck on level ground, running & using the litte plug...... correct?

Response From MADMIKE

Yes the car was level. The center plug is the one i unscrewed. I used an allen key. Could it be a back flow problem or even the filter need to be changed. The whole trany is making noses know. I don't think it needs fluid. Just that all the fluid in the tranny and not in the converter.

Response From Sidom

You left out the most important part of the process..... Was the vehicle running when you checked it???????

I agree with HT about your original problem. Servicing tranny's isn't meant to fix problems, it's meant to prevent them.... When a transmission starts having problems it's usually way past the service stage.....

If your trans is now making noises it wasn't before and you didn't check the level correctly and let too much fluid out, don't drive it until you are positive it's full or you are going to be doing more damage............

Response From MADMIKE

Your right i did not turn the car on. I did not move it. I will refill it in the morning. And hope for the best. One more thing, when this started, it took a couple of seconds from drive to reverse. I hope its not bad, i have no work and no money. I was going to refreash my trucking skills. Payed by workfours. So i could start working at werner trucking.

Response From Hammer Time

You need to get off that theory. Your way out in left field. The front pump, pumps the oil through the converter and the rest of the tranny. If it wasn't doing it's job, the truck wouldn't be moving at all. You may have serious internal problems but I assure you the fluid level is not the cause.

Response From Hammer Time

Your problem is not oil level.......................

Response From Sidom

Agreed.....I'm just wondering if now he's also running with a low tranny............

Response From Hammer Time

I'm sure he probably didn't prep it right before checking the level but he's looking for a converter (possibly) noise so I doubt fluid level has anything to do with it.

Response From MADMIKE

I just moved to fernandina from boston. If i tigthen it would it keep for a couple week. I have drive to jacksonville for a week. I have a very small business. Like it's just me.
