air filter cleaned/car starts & quits

Question From Guest on air filter cleaned/car starts & quits

So I cleaned my K&N air filter in my Subaru Forester, oiled it up (maybe I oiled it too much?) and put it back in. The car starts but shuts off after 4 seconds. Battery and engine light come on Correct re-installation of air filter, or too much oil blocking the intake? Should I just buy a new one and put it on instead?

Response From Hammer Time Top Rated Answer

K&N filters are nothing but problems. There is no benefit to having one and they ruin more Mass Air Flow sensors than anything else. You have likely contaminated your sensor and you will have to get some special cleaner to get the oil off without further damaging it.

Question From mcikes on 97 Legacy Lagging

1997
Subaru
Legacy L

Car is idling perfectly and you can rev it up without any issues while its in park. But as soon as I put it in drive its like there is no gas getting into the engine, I can put the pedal all the way down and nothing happens, the car just lags, then after a few seconds the car will start to go. It will do this for five minutes or so then the car will run fine and not do the hesitation thing again until after a lengthy stop at a red light or it sits for a few hours turned off. Ive recently changed the plugs and wires, checked the fuel and air filter and mass air flow sensor. I cant get a diagnostic because there is a broken pin in my OBDII that I havent replaced yet. Most people are stumped by this problem and cant figure it out.

Response From Discretesignals Top Rated Answer

You really should fix the OBD2 connector, so you can see if there are any codes stored and to look at data stream information (if you have the capabilities).

95 Subaru Hesitant

Question From zmuttai on 95 Subaru Hesitant

This problem began about a week ago...i have always had the check engine light on and every time i was told its nothing tooo serious but mainly emissions problem with the catalytic converter. I stopped paying attention months ago. So recently, while driving the car would accelerate ok, drive ok but when you ease off on the gas or are accelerating gently under 2500 rpm, the car stutter's and becomes a bit hesitant. Even on the highway while doing 60-ish, when you let go off the gas lightly, it would stutter.
Now, i waited till my gas was below E and filled up with a higher octane, replaced filter (it was dirty) and used lucas fuel cleaner, nothing....BUT, the check engine light disappeared.
I drained the coolant and flushed it....nothing...
Done the oil change about 500 miles ago and air filter about 4000 miles ago.
Replaced the pcv valve a few days ago...nothing

I barely drive it...i work from home.

What could be the problem? It still stutters and hesitant...any suggestions?

Response From Sidom Top Rated Answer

It would be a good idea to get the codes pulled anyway to see if there is something else stored in memory.... I know there are some codes that aren't as serious as others. The problem with ignoring an SES is there is a problem going on that isn't getting addressed but also if another failure is to happen you are unaware of this. The SES doesn't get bigger or brighter, it just stores the additional code. Granted if it is a real serious failure the SES may flash.

The best thing to do would be to do all over dud maintenance. plugs, wires, etc. Clean the throttle body, mass air flow sensor. If the problem is still there, when letting off the gas, put in neutral and see if that makes the difference. But honestly if some of this basic stuff doesn't fix your problem and it's not coding, you may have to take it in to be checked out..........

Response From Sidom

Glad to hear you got it running good...... Thx 4 letting us know the outcome

do all over dud maintenance. plugs, wires, etc.

Over dud???????????

What the hell is over dud??????????? Are these mods drunk or on dope?????????

Response From Hammer Time

What the hell is over dud??????????? Are these mods drunk or on dope?????????

Isn't that a job requirement?

Response From chickenhouse

I'll drink to that!! Probly anything else ya got too!!

Response From zmuttai

I got it!!
I cant believe that after doing all that i did, the problem was just that i needed a set of spark plug wires....!!!

I cleaned the fuel using Lucas, replaced filter, clean ed the throttle body, new spark plugs, air filter, radiator flush....nothing!! Then finally i replaced the spark plug wires and bam! The car doesnt hesitate anymore....and yes the gas mileage improved....it had become reaaaal bad on gas! $10 would last me about 60 miles! Now i think its improved alot...the subaru power/accelaration is back....that thing hit 5000 rpm when i merging on the highway today and it took off like a horse!

Response From chickenhouse

Basic tune ups are very neglected. Should be a first line of defense.

Response From zmuttai

Thank you...i will do this next weekend and post a response!
