I have a 2003 Kia Rio with about 170,000 miles on it 1.6 liter Automatic transmission.
My acceleration is slow to build up to 2000rpm and on the way upthe needle on the rpm bounces as if I am pressing the accelerator intermittently. However, this happens as I have constant pressure on the pedal.
My engine light comes and goes. I got it diagnosed and 3 trouble codes came up. Mass air flow circuit range/performance problem, gear four incorrect ratio, check TCM.
the tech told me that the mass airflow may be the issue but to clean it first and it works fine for two days then back to the same thing.
The thing that has me skeptical is the fact that this problem comes and goes

If you getting a MAF code, you need to fix that problem first before going after the transmission. The MAF sensor is a critical sensor and is used in calculating what the transmission's line pressure should be depending on engine load. If the MAF is messing up and causing the PCM to miscalculate engine load, it could damage the transmission.

The MAF sensor can be tested with a volt meter or scope. A scope is preferable because the problem the MAF might be having is a glitch a multimeter can't catch. Inspect the MAF sensor connector, wiring, and terminal tension. Wiggle the harness around while your watching the MAF's output to see if you have some sort of connection issue. Also make sure the intake ducting isn't ripped or has hoses disconnected from it.

My 1999 Kia Sephia 1.8L won't go past 30mph going uphill or when accelerating at all. I have replaced the fuel pump, timing belt, catalyc converter, mass air flow sensor and have had a complete tune up done to it. I am completely stumped at this point , does anyone have any suggestions on what else it could be that I should be looking for? Please help, it's an old car but it's my only means of transportation at the moment. Thank You!

Hey guys, I drive a 1999 Kia Sportage with 84,000 miles on it and recently the engine has been running rather odd. When I start the car, sometimes the engine will rev really high up to like 3000 rpm until I put it in reverse or drive. Also, lately when I am in drive and I stop, or slow down so it drops below 1000 rpm the engine will kind of rev down to 500 and then back to 1000. This causes the engine to kind of shake and has once caused it to shut off. Now I put it in neutral when I stop. Does anyone know what it could be?

You may have a bad IAC ( idle air control) but try eliminating any vacuum leaks and cleaning the throttle body first. Remove the intake snorkel, have someone hold the throttle wide open for you and scrub the back side of the throttle plate and surrounding bore with an old tooth brush and some carb cleaner. Be sure to spray some into the small holes next to the throttle plate. That should help stabilize the idle. If it still has a problem, replace the IAC.

I haven't had a chance to do this yet, but a couple of days ago the check engine light came on, so I went to O'Reilly and the code was p0101 which is mass or volume air flow circuit range/performance. The employee told me the mass air flow sensor was most likely dirty so he told me to buy a can of cleaner and clean the sensor. I did that and still had problems, and today the light came on again, so I went back in and it was the same code. I reset the computer so it would clear the code, but could this issue be related to the idle issues?

The one thing it likely wouldn't be is dirty. It could be a bad sensor, wiring, bad computer, plugged exhaust or intake snorkel leaking. It requires some testing.
