If you're running a K&N filter, get a can of MAF sensor cleaner & hope you didn't kill you MAF.

They may have it & not realize it.

It will be in the carb cleaner, throttle body cleaner section. I believe Gumout (sp) makes it. The one I use is in a gray can. It's designed specifically for MAF sensors, not as harsh as carb clean & does a good job. The main area to clean is the little sensing wire inside the housing

That indicates a problem with the data coming from Mass air flow sensor or it's circuit.

The vehicle is having trouble starting and tends to stall on accelleration from a complete stop. This only seems to happen during hot (95+) weather. When starting, the engine fires immediately but simply will not run. I've been told by a friend that my problem is the distributor module. Is this the same as the ignition control module, and if so, does that sound correct? Also, where is it located on the engine (diagram would be very helpful).

No, that doesn't sound correct at all. There are 2 things that come to mind. The most likely is the fuel pump but the Mass Air Flow sensor is a possibility.
What you need to do here is rig up a fuel pressure gauge so you can drive it and monitor the gauge so you can see if the pressure drops when the problem occurs. It does no good to test it at any other time. This engine is very, very pressure sensitive. The spec for this is 60 to 66PSI and it HAS to be within those specs at all times. If this drops to even 55, it won't run.

Is it common for automotive stores to loan that gauge or is it something I need to buy and/or find a friend with one?
Also, if I do get one, where do I hook in to the fuel system?

Some of the larger chain auto parts stores will rent or loan the gauges.

If you reach way in the back of the engine, you will feel the fuel lines coming into the engine. One of them has a little plastic cap and a service port under it that you thread the gauge on to.. Try to get a long enough hose to run it under the back of the hood and tape the gauge to the windshield. Try not to pinch the hose with the hood.

I can't stress enough that you have to observe this pressure during the failure.

Beyond that you will have to look at either the Mass air Flow sensor or a restricted catalytic converter.

Funny you should mention the catalytic convertor, seeing as how it is busted loose from it's housing and simply rattling around inside there. I've saving to fix that because I did not see it as an urgent problem. I'm guessing it's probably going to be the best place to start, and then move on to the pressure gauge if that doesn't work. Sorry I didn't mention this sooner but I didn't think that it could cause enough restriction to actually stall the engine.

They can get plugged so bad the truck won't even move. Yes, that's a good place to start. They don't always get restricted when they break up but they do sometimes. I have a 98 Blazer with 85K and I just had to do mine. The exhaust shop should be able to replace that for around $200.

Now is it possible that the loose parts could be restricted sometimes but not others. Recently it started and ran just fine, yet a few hours later, would not run?

Converter restriction always gets worse the longer the engine is running.
If it's a sharp, crisp shut down, the coil can act that way. The converter will be a smooth loss of power.

I recently bought a 1988 GMC S-15, 4wd, 2.8L, TBI, A/T. The engine is out of a 1992 model and is in good condition. The engine will run with new plugs for a short period of time before fouling the plugs. The injectors spray too much fuel at idle. I have changed the computer, ignition module, idle air control valve, Throtle position senor and rebuilt the throtle body and replaced the spark plug wires. I work in an auto parts store so I know that the '88 and '92 models use the same computer and TBI parts. Any help will be appreciated. Thanks.

Do you have access to a scan tool that can read ECM datastream information? Do you see any fuel dripping out of the injectors when you cycle the pump on and off? Have you checked for vacuum leaks? A vacuum leak on a speed density system will cause the engine to run rich. Another possibility is faulty injectors. What is MAP sensor voltage reading at idle? Have you inspected the coolant temperature sensor resistance/voltage to see if it corresponds to the actual coolant temperature?

Thanks for your reply. Ihave checked voltage to the TPS and Idle air control valve. This model does not have a Mass Air Flow Sensor. However, the instrument cluster does not In fact I put one new one in and it sprays the same as the old ones do. All help is apprecieated.

i have a 2002 gmc 2500 sierra light duty 4 wd extended cab pick up with approx 125000 miles. the problem started when my garage replaced the fuel pump & inline filter. the trucks milage dropped from approx 13 -14 mile per gal to approx 7-8 miles per gal after the install of the new pump. the truck was running veryy poorly prior to the old pump being replaced (like it was running out of gas) after the pump was installed the truck has been running great, except for the milage. the mach. tested the fuel pressure of the old pump and it was very low so it was replaced and the fuel filter was also replaced. the garage has looked at the truck 2 times since to try and determine why the mileage is so poor. theres no smell of gas and no leaks have been found around the fuel tank.

?? You say it's running great right now and the MPGs seem to drop in half! There's almost no exception to a vehicle running poorly would get worse mileage than when running well - no codes or other problems noted - yet?

With the history I would seriously be looking for some kind of leak that may only do it underway while it's not noticed, or perhaps some other unrelated factors: Any chance of cheating where you buy gas? Gas getting stolen? Anything different in the before and after driving habits?

I can only guess: Could brakes be dragging and you don't notice it or something weird that escapes notice right now. Try a different place to buy gas if in any doubt,

Thanks Tom for the advice. the garage is going to check for gas leaks while the truck is being driven and also the to make sure the brakes are working properly. at this point everything else is checking out good. i did read that a falty mass air flow sensor could cause a drop in gas mpg or at least hide the reason for it. when i went to and auto parts store to look into the cost for a fuel pump i was told that there are at least 5 different pumps for my truck, im wondering if the proper pump was installed and if not could that cause the mpg to drop.

I would be looking at injector balance & volume tests as well as making sure that the O2(s) were functioning properly.
What I’m thinking is that the old fuel pump with its low pressure wasn’t able to feed the engine the same amount of fuel that the new pump can.
Which may have been covering up a potential injector issue or an O2 sensor that is constantly sending a lean signal to the computer?
With a lean signal, the computer will start to dump fuel in an attempt to make the O2(s) toggle to rich.
Yes most times there would be codes set but not if the O2(s) were still toggling enough to not meet the threshold to set a code?
Just thinking out loud and may be completely off track.

The trick is that you said it's running great?? If the fuel pump was wrong or MAF sensor I wouldn't think it would run so well or could it be that it's just running so much better that you aren't noticing that it still isn't running its best?

Did tank come out for the fuel pump job - probably. There's plenty there that could leak - perhaps just splashing when driven or something that's just not making a smell while it's driven. Just gotta look around and if fuel pressure reads normal now and no codes it points to leak or the other possibilities of not getting the gallons stated at purchase or stolen fuel with some regularity is that's even possible,

Hey folks need a little help in figuring out what to do here. I have a 99 GMC Sierra, K1500 4x4 truck, its the old 99 body style, 5.7 liter motor. This thing has been running rough for about a month. When I pull out into traffic and really get on the accelerator the engine spits / sputters / misses, loses power and will not get above 35-40 miles as it continues to spits / sputter / miss. Now I can pull out and ease up to speed, taking about twice as long, and it will run ok. Once up to speed and going up incline I can feel it wanting sputter / miss or a slight slip feel almost like the transmission slipped. I can be in neutral and rev up the rpm's and it will never miss a beat. It only does the spit / sputter /miss thing when it under a load so to speak. I have also noticed in this time that on occasion, 1 out of 12-15 times, it appears that the engine is not getting any fire. I turn the ignition and it just turns over but no real fire. I have to try 3-5 times before it will crank and it will run rough for just a few seconds and then its ok. The check engine light is on and I am getting a 0174 code or a lean / rich bank 2. Here's what I have done so far. Fuel pump / pressure checked, new fuel filter, new air filter, mass air-flow sensor cleaned, new plugs / wires. Still having the problems. What do I try next? I did not change out the distributor or rotor button with the plugs, should I try that next? What about fuel pressure switch or crank sensor?

Any suggestions would be much appreciated.

Jim; I'm more concerned with the misfire than the P0174, although, they could be one in the same. But, the very first thing I'd look at would be the distributor cap. These type caps are very prone to cross-firing. Many times, you won't even be able to see it with the naked eye. If it's old, or you see moisture, replace it and the rotor. Now, back to the P0174.... This could be a result of the misfire, or the cause. If this is an actual misfire, you should be getting P 300series codes. i.e..
Cyl. 1= P0301, Cyl. 2= P0302, ect... What fuel pressure are you seeing? Should be 60-66psi. Have an exhaust analyzer test. High HC? Low, to none HC?
Have you had the injection system cleaned? (this is done with a machine....not the stuff you pour in the tank) Could be a dirty, plugged, or bad injector.
