Question From Guest on code for jeep liberty

2006 jeep liberty, 3.7engine, 87,000miles

check engine light went but now is off.

just pulled code p2098 can anyone tell me what this is.

thanks john

Response From Hammer Time

I had a Chrysler vehicle not long ago with that code that drove me crazy. The first think to look at is the downstream O/2 sensor itself. If the sensor is not the problem, then the exhaust system has to be examined very closely. Chrysler has an internal memo about cracks in the catalytic converter that causes this code. They tend to split right along the seam weld but you have to look very closely and possible pressurize the exhaust system to find it.

Response From Guest

thanks for the replies, where would the downstream o2 sensor be located. also now that the check engine light went off could this have been just a hiccup, or is there a problem.

thanks again guys

Response From Hammer Time

There are no such things as hiccups in computer systems. The problem occurred at one time and will likely occur again.

The sensor in question here is marked #4 in the pic.

Response From Guest Top Rated Answer

thanks for the very detailed responses
greatly appreciated.....john

Response From Sidom

In a nutshell that is a rear fuel trim lean code.......

That is a 2 trip fault code (meaning the vehicle has to be driven twice under the corrrect conditions to set)

Three passing trips will turn the light off by itself but code will be stored........

2006 Jeep Liberty won't start

Question From cme92 on 2006 Jeep Liberty won't start

2006 Jeep Liberty won't start/ crank. First time I tried starting it since issue, it would start no problem then cut off after 2-3 seconds (this happened 3 times). Now it will not start or crank at all. There are no noises made either.

Response From Hammer Time Top Rated Answer

Are there any security indicators on or flashing when you try to start it?

Response From cme92

Yes, the security light on the dash is on when key is on.

Response From Hammer Time

It's possible that the security system is locking you out. If you have another key I would try that first but you're probably going to need a high end scan tool to look into the security system.

Response From Discretesignals

Start by making sure the battery is fully charged and tests good. Also make sure your battery connections are clean and tight. Let us know what you find.

Response From cme92

I'll take it to auto zone soon just to be sure.

2005 Jeep Liberty Exhaust

Question From 1998_Sebring on 2005 Jeep Liberty Exhaust

I am looking to purchase a 2005 Jeep Liberty, and the particular one I like has a black buildup or burnt oil or something like that all inside the tailpipe. Is this normal?

Thanks!!

Response From Tom Greenleaf

That's a neat reminder of some older ways to tell about an engine!

Yes and No??

It's not really expected to be sparkling clean but I wouldn't think or say sooty is right. Kinda would need to see that in person and would still wonder some.

Perhaps make your deal contingent upon an exhaust gas analysis but before that if all else seems fine make an arrangement to check the vehicle again when stone cold like an overnite. Check underhood for evidence of it having been run before you start it first for the day and you'll know how well it really starts and runs cold AND have a chance to see if there's visable black or blue smoke out tailpipe at start up. In cold weather there is some steam which is normal in certain conditions as you should have seen before - I'm talking BLACK (too much fuel) or BLUE (oil does that) smoke puffs or any rough running. Hate to start off with any problems - enough happens anyway.

If dealer or private sale then insist on an independant check at a place of your choice. That's a good idea anyway for used car buying,

Question From AlyseA on 2003 Jeep Liberty Problems

So my Radiator is cracked and the fan behind it needs to be replaced in my '03 Jeep Liberty. The mechanic is saying that is going to cost me $800 but I feel like I am possibly getting ripped off. Any Help??

Response From Discretesignals

Are they using dealer parts?

Aftermarket parts at an independent shop should be somewhere around $500. You should call around some of the other shops in your area and do some price comparisons.

Response From AlyseA

So I did some calling around and I was told that for everything I need and service it would only be $490 (at the most) and I was told that for 2 different shops. But one thing that worries me is if its cheaper does that mean they are using used or cheap parts or are they giving me a more honest price than the $800.

Response From Discretesignals Top Rated Answer

You should ask what brand of parts they are using. Our shop has had decent luck with aftermarket parts. Ask the shop what their warranty is.

If you want factory oem parts, an independent can always install them for you.

Response From Tom Greenleaf

Just a thought or two: Do those quotes include itemization of everything they intended? The cheaper prices may be just a radiator and the fans. The higher price may include all new antifreeze, perhaps radiator hoses as they would be removed at radiator already and now 10ish years old. IDK, flushing out cooling system.

Dealer parts do near always cost more. Some aftermarket parts are just as good - a few better. Some dealers will use aftermarket parts too. There may be no mal intent with what either would do or consider as part of the job. This isn't instantly a rip off till you know what was included,
