Question From Guest on 1978 jeep cj5 transfer case shifter frozen

I have a 1978 Jeep CJ5 Manual 4WD - The transfer case does not want to shift - there are 2 plungers and a bar all of which are somewhat rusty - is there a product that can be sprayed on it to free it up?
Any other advice??

Question From Guest on 1978 Jeep cj5 dies at adle rough running smoke

My cj5 has been sitting for a few years - started right up after replacing motor mounts and putting some new body parts on - was running fone for the last few weeks short trips around the block - today suddenly started to run rough, and die at idle. Will start right up if I punp the gas pedal but will not idel and smokes alot when revving- any advice??

Response From Guest

Thanks Guys! - Took the carb back off finished the rebuild including the accellerator pump and cleaned it all out again - checked and adjusted the float level and drop etc - took care of it - running great now - on to the next thing! Appreciate your insight

Response From Tom Greenleaf

Great to hear the good news! Thanks for the feedback on how it worked out,

Response From Guest

OK Guys - Took the carb apart and replaced the needle and seat and generally cleaned her up - reinstalled- still running the same - but noticed that if I take off the large vacuum hose that goes from the base of the carb to the valve cover the engin will idle and run smoothly but still smokes. Any advice??

Response From Tom Greenleaf

Needle valve doesn't dictate level of fuel - floats do and must me measured,

Response From Hammer Time

What color is the smoke? Blue/gray, black, white?
Any odor to the smoke?
Is the check engine light coming on?

Response From Guest

Smoke is gray/black fills garage and stings the eyes - there is no check engine light or really any electronics on this thing other than the electronic ignition.

Response From Hammer Time Top Rated Answer

Sorry, didn't notice the year at first.

It sounds like the engine is running way too rich. That would have to be caused by something in the carburetor. You may have gotten a piece of dirt caught in the needle and seat causing it to flood over. You really need some carb knowledge to take that apart though.

Response From Guest

Thanks-

That makes sense- When I took the air cleaner off when it first died there was part of an acorn inside the air filter - not sure how it could have gotten in there there - maybe a squirrel -

Any way to clean it without taking it apart??

Response From Hammer Time

No, the control valve that controls the fuel level is internal and would most likely have to be disassembled to access it.
You can try removing the fuel inlet line and see if the is a removable fitting after it but most aren't designed that way.

Response From Tom Greenleaf

To add: 258 six - right? Wild problems with intake manifold and at the age now think sunken floats in carb. Just my 2 cents which lateley has only been worth that

More: Once fouled up plugs must be made to work and eventually replaced or screws up diagnosing it...........

Response From Guest

Yes 258 Six - so rebuilding the carb and replacing the plus is a good place to start??

Response From DanD

Here’s my 2 cents; not worth as much as Tom’s; I’m talking Canadian funds EH. LOL
I agree with Hammer, Tom and your thoughts of having the carb rebuilt; kind of a dead give away with you saying “Smoke is gray/black fills garage and stings the eyes”; there’s nothing like air saturated with hydrocarbons and carbon monoxide. LOL
Hope you get the jeep running properly; there’s nothing like the bottom end torque of those old 258’s.
I had one in a Gremlin back in the seventies; that thing would have the tires still just a smoken coming out of second gear; but then ran out of steam at 70mph. LOL

Dan.
