You might want to take a vacuum reading @ idle & high rpms. If the reading drops to almost nothing at high rpms, you may have a restricted exhaust system.....

On those old Jags....Isn't there a kit where some guys were dropping small block 350s in them?

i pulled the plugs and they were white so that would mean that it is not getting enough fuel so i just went and bought some mass air sensor cleaner i am hoping that doe the ticket

The test I suggested literally takes minutes to do and can confirm or rule out an plugged cat fairly quickly so you can move on to other test, plus it doesn't cost any thing to run, unless you don't have a vacuum gauge. But a cheap one is very inexpensive....


Cleaning the MAF isn't a bad idea, especially since you are using a K&N filter. Those are very hard on MAFs

I am about to buy this Jag, and the current owner has tried to repair wipers that weren't working, and has then caused the other instruments to stop working.

Also the car won't start. It has been in storage for 2 years, it turns over ok and wants to fire but won't.

Could someone give me an idea if these are easy fixes or not.

Brenda; Just some personal advice; Run, very fast. Jags are very expensive to work on, the parts are outragious, and Lucas instruments are, well, how do I say this? NOT GREAT. On the other hand, if you've got lots of money and really love this vehicle and are wanting to restore it, your choice.

I have a 1998 Jaguar XJ8 with 115k miles. When I go into it to drive today i notice the shifter was stuck in park. I've tried pressing the brake and taken it out of park like normal but it still wouldn't get out of park. I read the manual and three hours later I read that there is a J level thing thats holding it in park. The manual said to simply turn the car on, hold the brake, and put it in gear and if it didn't work that way it told me how to manually take it out of Park which was by taken out a screw by the shifter, stick the key (or a screw driver type tool) in the hole and some how it released the J level to make it where it can move it out of park but in order to drive it or crank it I had to put it in neutral, then once it was crank then shift it to drive or reverse, but once I put it back in park it gets stuck again by the J level thing. So now the only way I can drive my car is by sticking the key or a screw driver of some sort in the hold to manually take it out of gear. So what is the problem? and how can I fix this to make it where I don't have to manually take it in and out of gear with a screw driver? Thanks,

Guess - If brake lights/switch is working properly then you need to trace to and check the actuator that releases it from park when foot is on brake,

Well it's been happening recently. I put my key in, give it a turn and the engine starts, though with a CLICKITY CLACK sound. Literally, a clickity clack, as though there might be some kind of gremlin sitting beneath my engine drumming a wooden spoon against his plastic bucket.

I don't know what to make of it. I'm worried. I have reluctantly driven quite a bit already with the sound present.

Does anyone know what may be wrong with it?

Well I've actually just noticed recently that it has developed from a clickity clack sound to a somewhat grinding sound. I've determined it might be from like a pulley scratching on something or something with the belt?

In nutral, the more I rev the engine, the faster it sounds :S

Ok: I was trying to rule out the starter which doesn't sound like this now.

First - make sure all fluids are to proper level - gauges read ok?

This probably is a belt or any pulley with it. You might see something wrong with engine running just looking at it. Idler and tensioner pulleys seem to have more problems and alternators are close in there too.

Whatever it is do find it and fix it. If a belt cuts loose or parts fly off with bad bearing who knows what can be damaged when it might be fairly simple right now.

Sometimes just the belt itself can be noisy and if you sprayed some WD-40 on the friction side (engine off please) and it shuts right up when started a new belt would probably be the only thing needed.
