HELP! This belt came off my engine!! Which is it? Can I drive?

Question From XJR on HELP! This belt came off my engine!! Which is it? Can I drive?

Which belt is this that came off the engine? Can I drive without
it?

This shows the engine compartment where the belt should be:

Response From Tom Greenleaf

What kind of car would have helped but the pics work for now. This can't be used without the belt so now is the time to see which pulley caused this which is the likely problem. Second pic lower right looks a bit out of line and when you just spin and handle any of them they should be quiet and not wobble at all. Replace the one(s) that do AND a new belt.

Guess: If that one it looks like an idler or tensioner and if you bring it with you just match it up. Bet is the bolt is 13mm if that helps,

T

Thanks for the reply, its a Jaguar XJR 1997 and Ive been told its the supercharger belt and I should be able to drive a short distance without any trouble but will notice decreased power. I think I will have it taken on a tow truck just to be on the safe side.

Response From Tom Greenleaf

Yes - I'd choose the safe side. The belt in first pic looks old but it didn't just break and seems to show wear of a failed pulley or item which is the bigger concern. New belt alone probably isn't the fix but the part(s) that caused its failure then the new belt needed. Hey - you've got to know the Jag isn't going to have cheap problems and risking making it worse doesn't make any sense.

You may get lucks and find that a pulley with a replaceable bearing is the cause. Good luck,

T

Question From Guest on 2001 Jaguar

I've got a 2001 Jaguar XJR that I purchased with a salvage title approx 3 years ago. Have had little to no problems with the car but need to sell it now. Have had no interest from 2 ebay auctions and now autotrader. The car has 66000 miles on it and in great shape...I can only assume that I may be asking too much. What would you consider a fair asking price for this vehicle?

Response From carjunky

Have you checked the kelly blue book for a price?

Go here: http://www.kbb.com/ and select used cars on the right. This should help you get a fair market price for the car. It will also tell you trade in value.

Response From Tom Greenleaf Top Rated Answer

To add there is NADA.com and Edmunds.com for idea. Most people will deduduct for a a "salvage title"..... All of these are guessing and the value is always market and willing sellers and buyers. For a couple years now I've had better luck with side of the road and signs and info on a car and tell all to save the phone calls.

It helps if the car is clean and free of stickers and a glove box that has just what the car came with. The dealers all do this and it helps a lot. Good luck, T

Nothing operates on '98 Jaguar passenger door

Question From XJRdriver on Nothing operates on '98 Jaguar passenger door

I just purchased a '98 Jaguar XJR. Everything works fine except for the passenger door. The power window does not work from either the door or the driver's control panel; the power door lock does not operate on just that door (from either manually locking/unlocking the driver's door with key or the inside power lock switch), however, if you manually operate the door lock knob from the passenger door it will lock and unlock all the other door locks; and the power mirror does not work on just that door. I have inspected all of the fuses (that I could figure our anyway since I have alway sonly owned American cars up to now). Any hints as to what I am missing? I am hoping to fix this problem myself since labor on a Jaguar is so expensive. Thanks

Response From nickwarner Top Rated Answer

You need to see if you have power and ground working at the solenoid for the locks and the window motor. It also must have enough power to actuate it. One trick I use is to get a light bulb socket and light bulb for a taillight. It should have a pigtail you can add pins or spade ends on. Unplug the power window motor and hook your light bulb into the plug, then try working the switch in both directions. If the bulb lights up brightly when you hit the switch you know you have good power getting through and the command from the switch is occurring. The light bulb doesn't care about polarity so it works in both directions. Since both window and lock functions are missing from this door I would look into the black rubber accordian boot where the wires flex as you open and shut the door. Sometimes they wear from flexing and will only have a strand or two of the wire still intact if any.

Response From XJRdriver

I will give all that a try and let you know how it turns out. Thanks for all of your help.
