  • Engineered and tested to match or exceed OE for spark energy output, impedance, and durability. Tested at extreme engine performance condition at 7200 RPM. Advanced thermoplastic coil connector ensures proper connection and resists fractures caused by heat and thermal cycling. High-impact housing material ensures superior bond to epoxy for longer life in all operating conditions. Internal core surrounded by grain-oriented, magnetic-laminated steel maximizes high-voltage output at all speeds. Primary (24 gauge) and Secondary (43 gauge) copper wire ensure high-voltage availability for peak performance while reinforced bobbins prevent voltage flashover for extended service life. Copper wires using higher insulation grade ensure heat resistance and prevent high voltage breakdown. Optimum wire distribution developed by extensive testing ensures superior functional parameters and durability.

99 Jeep no spark

Question From Willybill on 99 Jeep no spark

1999,Jeep Cherokee, 4.0,101,556 miles. This jeep quit while driving down the road. It has no spark. The motor turns over, the fuel pump works as well as everything else. I have changed the Pickup coil, distributor cap, rotor, and crankshaft position sensor. I have the ignition coil off to test, but the book I have says the primary terminals that one is + and the other is -, and the book shows that they are marked. They are not!! I turned the ignition to the run position to see if there was power to tell which was + and -, but no power there. Should there be power at the primary feed wire to the coil?? Reading some of the old Posts, could it be the Ignition control module ??

Response From Willybill

Well, I have a Electro-Tek digital multimeter. It has 6 settings for resistance, 200, 2K,20K,200K, 2M, & 20M. For low resistance I used 2K and for high resistance I used 200K or 20M. When I spoke of high voltage terminal I guess I was talking about the secondary resistance coil tower. I hope that explains things. From the specs you posted It looks like I need a new coil. Thanks, I'll let you know if that takes care of my problem.

Response From Hammer Time

You would read the primary on the 200 scale and the secondary on the 20K scale.
If the coil doesn't read within those ranges, the coil would be bad anyway.

Response From Willybill Top Rated Answer

Thanks for the help Hammer Time, I replaced the ignition coil and as soon as I added some new gas it started right up. I figured the gas would be bad as it had sat for a couple of months.

Response From Hammer Time

The power only lasts for 2 seconds or until it sees a cranking signal so you need two people to test it.

Response From Willybill

Thanks, Hammer Time, I finally had time to work on the Jeep, today. There is power to the wire that goes to the coil. I had my wife crank the Jeep also and the test light stayed on while cranking. I had the coil off and it tested with a Resistance meter: + lead to + primary terminal and - lead to - primary terminal @ 200M showed 00.0 / same test but @ 2K showed .004. Then + test lead + primary terminal and - lead to high voltage terminal @ 200K showed 12.5. I assume it is the same as an ohmmeter. Does that mean the coil is bad? My book says if the high voltage terminal test indicates infinite resistance to replace it. 200K it indicates 12.5 and at 20M setting indicates 0.01.

Response From Hammer Time

I can't make heads or tails of what your saying there.

The primary resistance is measured between the + and the - terminals
The secondary resistance is measures from either the + or the - to the coil wire tower.

Also, there are 2 different coil types with different specs

Here they are

Coil Manufacturer

Diamond
Primary Resistance
0.97 - 1.18 ohms at 21 - 27 deg C
Secondary Resistance 11300 - 15300 ohms at 21 - 27 deg C

Toyodenso
Primary Resistance 0.95 - 1.20 ohms at 21-27 deg C
Secondary Resistance 11300 - 13300 ohms at 21 - 27 deg C

Jeep Mystery Starting Problem

Question From mdelay on Jeep Mystery Starting Problem

1993 Jeep Grand Cherokee 4.0L Unsure on mileage.

Jeep is at the mechanic shop because it would not start. It had a split wire in the wiring harness. It has a new header, ignition coil, cps, distributor, fuel injectors, computer, and many other parts. Timing was off, but is now set. The mechanic is able to get it started only with the #1 spark plug out. Any ideas?

Response From nickwarner

Doesn't make much sense. Has he done a compression test yet?

Response From Hammer Time

I'd also look for something that may be causing crossfires like the firing order or cracked distributor cap.

Response From Discretesignals

Check for plugged exhaust system or cat? Maybe taking the plug out allows the exhaust gasses to pass through #1 exhaust valve. (WAG)

We bought it not running, the previous owner said he thought that it was a fuel problem. After having someone take a look at it, they discovered the ECU was not communicating to the car. Took it to the dealership to have it "flashed", since previous owner said he replaced it. They said it was not able to be flashed because it was bad. They replaced the Crank Sensor, and Distributor, and new ECU. It was running, but had a terrible exhaust leak. Didn't drive it because the leak was horrible. Got the header replaced, now it won't start again. Found wiring harness to have some wires melted together. Replaced wiring harness. Replaced the fuel injectors, new plugs, wires, ignition coil, new battery, and another Crank Sensor. Still nothing. Someone suggested the timing may have been thrown off. Had a new timing chain/belt put on it. Still nothing. Took it into the mechanic shop and found a wire in the wiring harness was not connected, but still nothing, ran a new ground (which he said helped).

Response From Hammer Time

Most likely that melted wiring is what ruined the first computer and may have done it again. Computers don't just die of old age, they are killed by something.

Response From mdelay

Final report is a clogged catalytic converter. Unplugged o2 sensor and it starts with # 1 plug in.

Response From Hammer Time

0/2 sensor Unplugged or removed?

Response From mdelay

88 Jeep Wrangler

Question From Ski on 88 Jeep Wrangler

My Buddy is working on an 88 Jeep Wrangler, It has the straight 6 Carbureted engine in it with Manual Transmission. The issue he is having is the engine will stay running when you turn the ignition switch all the way over but the second you release the pressure off the key the engine will die. He has replaced the ignition switch with no results. He has also replaced the computer and still nothing. He jumped over the key switch and still has not solved the problem... Does anyone have any other thoughts on this problem so he can get this resolved?

Thanks in advance for any Help..

Response From Discretesignals Top Rated Answer

With the ignition on, do you have battery voltage at the ignition coil?

Response From maddness13

Yes there is power at the coil.

Response From re-tired

just to be sure . there is 12v at the + side of coil with the key in the run position?

Response From Discretesignals

This doesn't make an sense. Has your friend removed the ignition switch from the column with the wiring still attached and manually used a pocket screwdriver or equivalent to slide the contact bar in the switch to start the engine? Maybe there is a problem with the linkage in the steering column?

Response From maddness13

The positive side of the coil had no power. I Think I have found the problem. The ignition control module. Found in the bottom of left fender under washer bottle. It looks like old ford brain box.I am installing a new one today. Cost about $120.00. I will let you know if this does fix the problem.thanks for the help.

Response From Hammer Time

That's a good way to throw away $120

Response From maddness13

Good news ! ignition control module fix it thanks guys

Response From Discretesignals

The positive side of the coil had no power.

So, the coil had power and then it didn't have power.

Just curious. What made you replace the ignition module? How did you determine it was bad? Just to let you know the ignition module doesn't supply power to coil. The power for the coil comes from the ignition switch. The module controls the coil's ground to charge and fire the coil.

Response From Hammer Time

Sounds like your testing was faulty because you said you had no power at the coil and that doesn't come from the Ignition module.
