How to id #1 cylinder on 2001 Hyundai Sonata

Question From rball on How to id #1 cylinder on 2001 Hyundai Sonata

2001 Hyundai Sonata 4 cyl failed emissions test with "#1 cylinder misfiring". In standing in front of car, looking at engine, which is the #1 cylinder?

Also, check engine light is on, which I assume is connected to the above.

I plan to start by replacing plugs and maybe plug wires. Any other suggestions?

Thanks.

Response From jasontyms

Bit of advice when you pull the number one plug wire look at the boot real good and I bet you will see carbon tracks on it, and make sure that your timming belt is good it needs to be replaced every 60k miles if it breaks you will bend valves mostly the exhaust ones. I know this because I worked at a Hyundai dealership for almost 10 years as a mechanic.

2006 Hyundai Sonata GLS V6 3.3L/204 question

Question From blueduke on 2006 Hyundai Sonata GLS V6 3.3L/204 question

Wonder if anyone knows if this engine is problematic. bought a Chrysler Sebring but found out about all the engine problems it has no took the car back. thinking of getting a 2006 Hyundai Sonata. If any has experience with or knowledge of these vehicles your input would be appreciated.

Response From Hammer Time

What is the "204" in your title?
If this is the mileage? If it is, that would be high mileage for any make vehicle and I would probably advise against that.

I agree with Sidom though. There is no problem with Hyundai or kia as brands.

204 is not the mileage (73,000 miles), it's just the number of the car the dealer had on their website. I cut and pasted. Incidently I ended up buying it. I'm pleased. Car is for my son who is in college. Should be all the car he needs until he graduates and start's making his own money

Response From Hammer Time Top Rated Answer

Your right. That will make a good "first car"

Response From Sidom

Ditto

Response From Sidom

Wow I didn't mean for you to turn your car in but I guess if the option was available and you didn't "trust" it, that might be for the best..

There really isn't too many cars I would advise against other than a Intrepid or anything with a Chrysler 2.7.

Hyundia are good quality car. 25 years ago they were a joke but now, quality wise are right up there with Honda & Toyota. The Domestics have some decent cars as well, everyone is really close now.

I would have to say Hyundia probably has the best warranty in the market with their 10 year 100k mile powertrain warranty, of course this is for original owners only and doesn't transfer to a 2nd party.

If you could afford new that would be the best option. If you do go new keep in mind that you would have to provide maintenance records if you ever had a warranty issue. I.e oil change receipts for an engine problems and trans fluid changes for any tranny issues.

No records, no warranty

Response From Elise Car Tech

Don't buy a Hyundai or a kia. Take advantage of the countless year end deals that are going on this time of year. Dealers are hungry to sell cars, and move old inventory. If you want to save money, and still want to get an excellent reliable car, buy a preowned "Certified Honda or Toyota".

Question From Guest on 2001 Hyundai Sonata Hood Latch

Can someone tell me how to open the hood latch that's broken?

Response From DanD Top Rated Answer

Get a BIG HAMMER

Sorry just joking. LOL
But these kinds of jobs are like a search & rescue mission. Start taking things apart until you can get to the latch or the latch’s release cable and pop the hood open?

1993 Hyundai Sonata

Question From RWmG on 1993 Hyundai Sonata

I have a 93 Hyundai Sonata when i was changing the front brakes i noticed that the rotor on the driver side kinda wobbled the one on the passenger side is tight. It makes like a low pitch woo woo woo woo noise that speeds up the faster i go when i drive and the front end vibrates some.Is this from a bad bearing,cv joint???Anybody have any ideas?

Response From Tom Greenleaf

Did this just happen with brake work? If so it could be corrosion between rotor and hub that needs to be cleaned out,

T

Response From RWmG

I noticed the rotor was moving when i was taking the tire off.The noise started about 2 weeks ago.A friend told me change the brakes to see if it would stop it.I haven't driven it yet because i don't want to take a chance of something breaking.

Response From Tom Greenleaf

Ok: Just take the wheel off and see if rotor can move top and bottom in and out. Most of these rotors are not loose to the hub but if it is it should be removed for inspection and if rusty they should be replaced -- both of them. Check out if the whole hub wobbles or just the rotor. Whole hub would be a bearing problem,

T

Response From RWmG

Ok.Thank you I'm gonna go do that now.I'll be back.

Response From RWmG

I think the hub is built onto the rotor. The top bottom and sides move in and out.The middle part doesn't move up or down or in and out. When it moves the cv joint moves with it.

Response From Tom Greenleaf

Ok: When I said "rotor" I meant just the rotor and "hub" I mean the part that the CV shaft goes thru, has the bearing, the studs for the wheel and lug nuts. The rotor fits over that hub and on Asian style brakes the rotor is so snug to that hub that it may have threaded holes to pull the rotor off. They can appear to be one unit....rotor and hub but I can't think of an exception to this type of car.

It would be ok if the rotor could wobble when the wheel is off on some cars but I really doubt it with this one. You said the passenger's side didn't do that. I am still confused as to how it came free from the hub unless you had just moved that wheel and if loose enough it didn't center itself back on the hub when tightening up the wheel. If it did that it could be bent or rendered unusable again. To take those rotors off the car you have to remove the bracket that holds the brake caliper which you may have noticed when you did the brakes.

At any rate if we are confusing each other about what is wrong you need real hands on help to pin point the problem. THIS IS A REAL SAFETY CONCERN and you should be afraid of driving it as you mentioned as something could fall off!

Be careful. I'll try to help as I understand what is happening. So far I advise that this car is grounded till fixed,

T

Response From RWmG Top Rated Answer

It is the bearings.

Response From Tom Greenleaf

Great that you found out! Air tools help and most are not that hard to do,

T
