1995 honda passport clutch problems

Question From sundayeveryday13 on 1995 honda passport clutch problems

we have replaced our clutch on our 1995 honda passport and it keeps pulling the wedge collar which clicks on to the throw out bearing out of the pressure plate. is this common?2wd 6cyld

Response From Sidom

Strange...I guess my reply disappeared........we'll try again.

No that's not normal.....I'm assuming you are talking about the collar that is pressed in the the T/O bearing.....

Is it coming apart when you are trying to reinstall the trans or after the trans is in and you are using the clutch...........

Response From sundayeveryday13 Top Rated Answer

after transmission is in and we are using clutch the ring comes off of the wedge collar therefor the throw out bearing comes unlocked from the pressure plate.

Response From Sidom

I'm having a hard time picturing this. Once the trans is installed there really isn't (or shouldn't be) enough play for the bearing assembly to come apart. If the bearing is coming off the fork, is may be bent or cracked. I would be taking a close look and that and also double check the parts installed to make sure you got the right ones....

This isn't your exact assembly but the fork is the "Y" piece that holds the T/O bearing....

Response From sundayeveryday13

I really appreciate your help but that is not the part that is coming apart it is on the other side where the t/o bearing attaches to the clutch pressure plate. The clutch is not a push type clutch it pulls on the pressure plate. The t/o bearing locks into a wedge collar which is in the pressure plate that is what keeps pulling out. I hope that makes sense.

Just so we're on the same page. This is an exploded view of a 95 Honda Passport 2wd 3.2 6 cyl.

If the t/o bearing is somehow coming off the fork then there is probably a problem with the fork and it should be inspected very closely, also the mounting & pivot points of the fork....

The slave cyl pushes on the fork to disengage the clutch, I'm not sure what you are referring to when you say "it pulls on the pressure plate"

Response From ClimberBill

Loren Champlain SR posted a good photo but it doesn't show details. His photo shows the wedge collar assembly already in the pressure plate. The throw-out brg pushes into the wedge collar assembly that is already centered in the pressure plate. The T-O brg should not be able to pull out once it is in place. This has nothing to do with the T-O brg coming off the release fork. Keep in mind the fork pulls on the T-O brg in this installation.

If someone will tell me how, I'll place a couple photos I took showing it in detail.

After installing a new clutch set, a friend of mine had the throw-out brg pull out of the pressure plate twice and sold his Passport to me, rather than attempt it a 3rd time. I took his new clutch kit off and exchanged it at the same parts store. I'll post my results & findings when I'm done.

The top pic is the pressure plate. Throw-out bearing just to the right, alignment tool, pilot bearing directly below the pressure plate, the clutch disc at the bottom.
Which part are you having an issue with?

Question From Guest on Serpentine Belt Replacement Honda Passport 2000

I have a Honda Passport 2000. The serpentine belt broke. I manhandled my car into the parking lot of NAPA auto parts and bought another belt. But the one I bought seems to be too big? What gives? Is there a diagram anywhere about how to install this thing? The diagram is not located on the hood of my car as it should be. It's 11 pm and I am about to scream. Please help!

Question From Guest on 99 Honda Passport Coolant Leak

1999 Honda Passport
3.2L V6
135,000 miles

Had puddle of coolant under car after it sat for 3 days. Filled reservoir and it ran fine until the next weekend when it sat for a couple days, another puddle. If I run it every day there is no loss.

It is not running hot and the engine performance feels the same. I checked the hoses and looked for a source but couldn't fine anything.

Thanks in advance.

If coolant is puddling under the vehicle, you should have the system pressure tested to verify source of leak...
Autozone does rent a cooling system pressure tester but it doesn't come with all the adapters needed to fit all vehicles...it will fit the normal radiator top and it has one adapter...depends on your style....
if not ,it will be to your advantage to take it in to have it checked....since your getting a warning now, don't wait until it gets worse and possibly leaves you stranded somewhere....

just my opinion....

I'll do it.

To add: Nick - this type of elusive leak is frequently the shaft seal of the waterpump. It may seal at certain temps and pressures. It also must seal slight vacuum where is could open up and have a leak time an quit leaking again. Try to find the water pump, have a mirror or whatever to look right at the seal and vent when you pressure up the system with a tester. If it still won't leak right inn front of you look for dried traces of anti-freeze from that area,

Thanks guys. I never could find the source of the leak, just coolant all over the bottom of the front protion of the engine. I took it in and had the system pressurized, it held 15psi for a little over 30 minutes and finally a little coolant appeared where I had noticed it previously, it continued to hold the pressure so apparently it is a small leak? They could not confirm the exact source of the leak but suspect it is the water pump and recommend replacement. I am debating about changing it myself, but I have not really done much repair, only minor tune ups. It looks like I will have to take the front end apart and remove the timing belt just to access the water pump. My Dad lives across the state who would be a huge help but he won't be able to get down for a few more months.

In your expert opinion, am I biting off more than I can chew.

Another problem has creeped up. The gas gauge does not work properly. It reads empty after about a half a tank is consumed. It will jump back up to normal periodically but then it will go all the way down and begin flashing. Could the float be getting stuck? I also read that soemtimes the sending unit goes bad on these models.

Thanks again!

Product Part No. Price Duralast new / Water Pump
Warranty - LLT BWP-9204 $57.99 Note: Pump is timing belt driven. It is recommended to replace the timing belt with the replacement of the water pump.

It says water pump (likely problem with this car) is timing belt driven so as it says above it is a good time to do the belt also and would probably do the pump with a belt it tough enough to get at everything which it probably is.

"Are you biting off more than you can chew?" Your call. Most of These are better for high end DIYers and may involve more tools than are at your side,

Point taken, I will leave it to the pros. Thanks for the help!

YES........

I agree that this is one you may not want to get involved with.
There is a special tool needed just to hold the pulley in order to remove the crankshaft bolt..
And that bolt is a son of a gun to remove...it has thread locker on it from the factory and takes a powerful impact to break it loose or a good bar with room needed for leverage..something you wont have by doing in the driveway.Believe me...Smart choice, leave this one to the pros...

Here is a pic of the tool...

You will also need a pulley puller or gear puller to coax the center pulley off of the crankshaft, if you are lucky enough to get the bolt off (mentioned in previous post)
