86 honda crx wont start(help)

Question From arizonapatrol on 86 honda crx wont start(help)

i have an 86 honda crx that will not start. took it out and let some guys mess with it and it wont fire up now. ok so here is what it does. and it does have a carb. when i crank it over it will not fire but it will burn the gas in the exhaust. back fireing. the timing marks on the cam shaft are not of any others i can find. it is a d15. all the manuals i have say that there is the word up on it but not on mine. and im frustirated. i have tried it both ways with the two marks at 3 and 9. both ways level with the head nothing. i am getting fuel and spark. still nothing. if anyone has any ideas please let me know

Response From Tom Greenleaf

Is this to suggest somebody did something to the car and now you have poor to no spark?

By any freaking chance does this have points? Some vehicles for export were different set ups and can't speak for which ones got what if so. It should indicate it meets or exceeds emissions for USA and or Calif underhood would be a good clue if you can read it and say certain specs,

T

Response From arizonapatrol Top Rated Answer

it does not have points. it is a hornet race car and i was going to let one of the top hornet drivers drive it. i started it up and drove it onto the trailer and started it up and drove it off the trailer. i went over right before the race cause i was running a higher class and they wad the timing belt off and they put it back on and nothing. they said the adjusted the timing and the carb to make it go faster. but even then i cant find any adjustments on the carb. so i know they did something just dont know what. neither do they. im a chevy or ford guy i know nothing about hondas.

Response From Tom Greenleaf

Timing belt if found off in many cars called "interference engines" is the demise of the valves at least if not more. Don't have a listing for this engine but most HP engines will near self destruct if belt slips or breaks,

Sorry,

T

Response From arizonapatrol

so on these can the head just be replaced or do you think it would be more? i do appritiate the help

Response From Tom Greenleaf

A compression test would help to diagnose this,

T

Response From Sidom

Like Tom said, you may want to run a quick compressiong test. Sure seems like if it ran before the t belt, then that would be the problem area. Strange you don't have "up" at least you have the 2 side marks. You could always go old school, pull the v/c cover and look at the valves to make sure you up on #1.

You may wanna just cover your bases on the basics. Look for unplugged connectors, disconnected grounds & check all the fuses.............

question about buying a honda crx with a salvaged title

Question From bluestrayer on question about buying a honda crx with a salvaged title

hey everyone im looking at buying a 1991 honda crx with 160,000 miles at an used car dealership. i got a carfax report for it and it says it was in an accident in 1998 and was given a salvaged title. i figured that since it was 9 years ago and since its in good condition and im only paying 1000 for it, i should go ahead and buy it. is this a good decision?

Response From Tom Greenleaf Top Rated Answer

At that age unless you are a collector of this vehicle it doesn't matter much more. An accident from 1998 must have been fixed well or it probably wouldn't be around now. At some point and at some price range you have to just consider the condition of the vehicle in front of you. Heck you could drop 1,000 bucks on a repair or two in no time.

For newer cars the salvage title is a death sentence to its value. I would verify that this car is legal to operate where you live. They are here but it excuses the manu from recalls and in an insurance claim you would get docked points in value but not at that age,

Question From Guest on 1990 Honda CRX SI A/C

Last week when i turned the a/c on, it would blow slightly cool air for about 5 minutes and then the clutch would stop and never come back on until it cooled off. I checked and serviced the freon R-12 and the same thing happened. Today i evac'd the system and put R-12A in it. Now the clutch engages but it only blows hot air. The pressure is reading good, no bubbles in the sight glass, but only hot air comes out. I felt the tubes coming out of the compressor and both are hot. Can I assume the compressor is bad or would something else cause this?

Response From dave284 Top Rated Answer

Did you flush the system out ?

Response From Tom Greenleaf

I think R-12A is a semi flammable name brand is Freeze-12 and reports have it you only add about 55-60% of the original charge or it will choke. Lines shouldn't get way too hot which indicates problems with charge amount - guess. What's the high side pressure?

T

IMO - Alternatives are not easy or dependable. 134a stinks but is predictable....

89 Honda CRX Style Coupe Dual overhead Cam pressure test failed part of smog test

Showing 2 out of 2 Posts
Question From lmuela on 89 Honda CRX Style Coupe Dual overhead Cam pressure test failed part of smog test

Hi My Son has a 89 Honda CRX. Just had an Arizona smog and failed the pressure test.
Please help in anyway.

On the back of the page it says PRESSURE REPAIR INFORMATION , Check appropriate boxes for those repairs performed on vehicle.
It says TANK/FILLER with a little white box to check, CHECK VALVES with a box to check, HOSE/FITTINGS with a box to check next to it also. There is another box to check which say OTHER.
And then PRESSURE REPAIR COST ____.00

I guess that is what they will check but we have no idea what all that is.

Can someone help us with this? Help us try to fix it ourselves. Please give us some pointers. Or what can it be?

Passed the Gas Cap Test
Passed the Evap components test
Failed the pressure test.

We'd appreciate any help possible.
Thanks

Response From tut2261 Top Rated Answer

If the E-tests in Arizona are similar to Colorado. The test that failed would be the fuel tank and filler hose. It is possible that the car has a rubber section in the fuel filler neck that is dry rotted or cracked, or if there is a leak some where in the system. You should probible take the vehicle to a "Regestered" Emissions repair shop and have them look it over. The test only requires the system to hold 6 psi. Thats a pretty small leak. The part on the back is for the shop that repairs the concern to fill out. Each technition has their own state I.D.# that has to be on the back. However if you repair it your self, you do not have to fill out the back.
