Jeep headlights

Question From Jeeper dave on Jeep headlights

I have a '92 Jeep XJ Larado with a 4.0 HO & 171,000 miles. All was good but it was left parked for 3 wks. and now it has no headlights. All other lights (and other electrical) seam to work just fine and headlights will come on if I hold back the multi function switch. High beam light on dash comes on at that time but always goes out when switch is released. All fuses are good and there is power to them however there is no power to the headlight plugs at the soccet. ????????????? I am not a mechanic so please explain in simple terms. Changed out the headlight switch. No luck.

Response From Tom Greenleaf Top Rated Answer

Is there ground the headlight sockets?

Headlights dim on 94 Jeep

Question From rdub on Headlights dim on 94 Jeep

Just bought a 94 Jeep Grand Cherokee. The headlights are very, very dim. I disconnected the battery while the engine was running but the engine kept running. Alternator must not be out. What should I check?

Response From Hammer Time Top Rated Answer

First off, don't ever disconnect the battery with the engine running on a computer car.

You'll have to check all your power connections and grounds.

"I disconnected the battery while the engine was running but the engine kept running. Alternator must not be out."

FOLKS, THAT TEST WAS FOR BRAINLESS TESTING DURING THE EISENHOWER ADMINISTRATION! For this thread, now there's probably lots more to worry about that blew than dim headlight problem which was probably just a weak ground common to both.

Arggh!

Question From nearly stoopid on Headlight R&R

'02 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo; can't figure out how to R & R headlights.

Response From Loren Champlain Sr

Love your name! LOL. Most headlamp bulbs are accessable once you open the hood and look directly behind the headlamp. There will be a large (about 3" diameter) ring that you'll turn counter-clockwise to remove the bulb. The bulb, ring, and wiring connector will come out by pulling backward. Might be easier to disconnect the wiring first, just depends on the application. When installing the new bulb, be careful not to touch the new bulb with your fingers.
Sometimes, the boneheads that design these cars, will make you remove a battery or a coolant recovery bottle to gain access, but not much we can do about that.

Response From nearly stoopid

Thanks Loren, I should have been more specific.. was replacing the headlight assembly... Took the Jeep to a couple of friends at work. One had some experience with this application... removed the obvious screws plus the grille, then lifted up on the bottom edge until the ass'y 'popped' loose, then pulled forward for some more 'popping loose' which freed the ass'y from the 3 plastic grabbers/grommets. Thanks again for your help.

Response From DanD

Hey stoopid
I concur; love the user name. LOL

Thanks for coming back and posting your findings; it will likely help someone else out.
Not stoopid at all.

Dan.

Response From dmac0923

i changed the headlights on my ex girlfriends 2004 Grand Cherokee a few years back. like you said it was a royal pain in the Arse. For some reason i somewhat remember having to totally remove the grille

Response From Loren Champlain Sr

dmac; You changed the headlights on your ex-girlfriend? And you wonder why she's your "ex"?

Question From mikol.daniel on 2009 Jeep grand cherokee overland headlights wont turn on

Hi,

When i try turning on my regular lights it does not work, only the long lights work. how can i fix this?

thanks

Response From Hammer Time

What are you calling "long lights"?

Response From mikol.daniel Top Rated Answer

sry i mean high beams

Response From Hammer Time

If your high beams work but the low beams do not, that is generally a sign of a bad dimmer switch but your truck also has a control module for the lights. It is under warranty so let them worry about diagnosing it.

Question From cac7070 on jeep cherokee headlights

i have a 1995 jeep cherokee sport. its v6 4.o with 170,000 miles. the headlights work fine on it for about 10 minutes then they start to blink on and off. if you turn the switch off then back on they will work for a few more minutes then start blinking again. they will blink for about a minute and then just go off completely

Response From elffarms

I ahd a simular problem in an older Ford Big Rig. I replaced the switch and the problem seemed to go away. The issue like the other post says is that too much current is flowing thru and this causes some switches to act like a heat breaker, heats up = off, then cools down = on, after a few cycles, either the switch locks open until reset or perhaps you have a circuit breaker that resets when you turn off the lights and let the system cool down

Response From Tom Greenleaf Top Rated Answer

Guess: One of them or wires to them is drawing too much current. Take a look at sockets for troubles and perhaps try unplugging one and bet one will stay working and the other will still cause this problem but after a longer time which would point to which to chase down. Any aftermarket lights wired into this should have all connections and wires carefully checked for troubles,
