My bmw 320d

Question From Markyk40 on My bmw 320d

Hi I have a bmw 320d keeps getting oil in the rad not over heating no smoke out of back no water in the engine at all . my mate thinks it is the oil cooler can any one help thanks

Response From Tom Greenleaf

If either engine or transmission oil is cooled in an end tank of the radiator that would be most likely. Oil in with coolant doesn't take much to make a mess of the coolant. Worse the rubber hoses or any cooling system rubber parts are not going to do well with oil.

Clean out entire cooling system starting with even automatic dishwashing or laundry soap, Simple Green said to help or others and flush all that out before getting it back together.

Some chance engine gaskets like head gasket could mix there so if radiator isn't used for cooling an oil keep checking. Some dirtiness in a recovery tank can be normal with some time. Real oil invasion would be making it like a milk shake all throughout,

Hi thanks for getting back to me my car is a manual it is like a gray think oil I have ask a round and was told if the head gasket had gone it would not run and it smoke white smoke out the back. and over heat is that right my car dose not do any of that , bit worried
As to close to Xmas thanks for all your help

Response From Hammer Time

Head damage can expose itself in many different ways. If you don't have an engine oil cooler on the car, then you are likely looking at a head gasket or cracked head.

Response From Markyk40

Hi thanks think it dose as I buy a oil cooler on eBay , the car is a 2001 bmw e46 320 d estate . I hope you can help thanks for your time

Response From Tom Greenleaf

If you have added an ENGINE oil cooler I doubt it is using the radiator itself. Any engine parts involved that are keeping fluids or gasses apart from each other could fail any which way. Using radiator for cooling automatic transmission fluid is common to me alone or with and extra possible.

I couldn't guess what you bought off of Ebay for what. If an oil is getting into coolant it isn't normal for any reason it could and needs to be tended to/fixed at once,

T

Response From Markyk40

Hi I have not put any parts on it yet I only had the car 2 weeks. runs ok and not over heating or smoking, I've been told it won't be the head gasket and if it was it would cost me around £550! I've driven it 60 miles and its drives fine so the oil cooler would not push oil in to the rad I can not find any cream in the engine or the dip stick and the oil cap , just gray stuff in the rad or and the heater still getting hot I some thing about cars but I never seen this before thanks mark

Response From Tom Greenleaf

? Mark - You've been told this and that and just owned this vehicle a couple weeks. If there's a problem or issue that "someone told you" would be this or that or cost what that isn't dependable anything.

If it did need a head gasket job I don't know who could give you such a fast price like"£550" = British Pounds me me and that wouldn't be enough if that's all it needed. You wouldn't know the extent of just that type job until parts were sent out or inspected carefully for more than just a gasket.

The time to check out a car is BEFORE you acquire it not after. If you own this now get it checked out by a qualified shop. I don't think any version of this vehicle is sold where most regular techs are from at this site, mostly USA and Canada. The model saying 320'd' suggests it's diesel to me and BMW nameplate can mean that only certain shops would be equipped to service these and others that are more specialty cars as well.

I really think you should have this inspected by a pro,

T

Response From Hammer Time

Somebody ripped you off. They must have known it had the problem and it could mean a new engine.

1997 bmw 318 IS coupe over heating

Question From rlm on 1997 bmw 318 IS coupe over heating

1997 BMW 318 IS engine over heating. Machined head, new head gasket kit, new water pump, new radiator. Stop engine leak was found in radiator. Any reasons why car is still over heating? (besides get rid of car). Could engine block be plugged?

Response From Tom Greenleaf Top Rated Answer

There are several types of stop leak. Some make a gel and some the saw dust idea. Some cars have some as factory fill. People tend to go nuts and if first one doesn't work try another and that can really plug things up.

I think an aggressive flush could get most of it out. You may need to get a flushing product to help. I would do all of it and backwards and forwards till clear. If stop leak was used for a head gasket it usually doesn't work. It can fix a very small leak in some cases but if anyone wants to try this just use half the amount and if that doesn't work fix the leak. I don't suggest using these things unless a car is a bit of a junker and you want to squeeze out some more time with it.

Certainly you must be sure the fan is working properly??

T

Response From rlm

Thanks, the fan is working properly, we're flushing the system right now. Some material is coming out, hopefully this will fix the problem.

Response From Tom Greenleaf

Cool Beans! Flush away. You'd be surprised, it doesn't always take much junk to mess it up,

BMW temp is sky high

Question From Basem1975 on BMW temp is sky high

Hi. I have BMW 316i 1.9 petrol (W reg 2000). Today the temp went on red. I took it to the garage, they changed the thermostat and the water pump. The temperature is still going up to red few minutes after start and the blow heater brings cold air. There is no water leak, radiator fan is working, the new water pump and thermostat are working properly and the mechanic doesn’t know what to do anymore. Please help! Any ideas?? Thank you.

Response From Sidom Top Rated Answer

I would check the radiator for a restiction as well as checking the cooling system for exhaust gases due to a bad head gasket...

Question From afgballer4life on NEED HELP CHOOSING A CAR

hi i am looking to buy a car for about 4-5k that will last me... I don't know if i should go for a BMW 3-Series or A 01-05 Civic
Im 19 and Ive been through 3 cars which have cost me alot of repairs
first car was a 1999 civic which had blown head gasket and transmission problems
2001 acura TL which transmission had to be replaced
and what i am driving now a 2000 civic si which i pay $450 monthly for insurance and which had its head gasket replaced twice and clutch which cost me about 2k in less than a year
i am a student so i don't have a huge budget so i need some advice on a car that will last me and be reliable and and ive been through many japanese cars
What do you guys think i should go
I am thinking about a 3 series BMW but i am scared of the parts and maintenaince expenses.... usually ive had a problem every 3 months with my car thats cost me atleast 300 dollars
Are BMW's that much more expensive to repair..and are the parts much more to expensive....
I found a 2002 BMW 320i 5 speed with 230 000 kms for 5k should i go for it
please helpppppp is really appreciated

Response From Discretesignals

Don't think you should buy the BMW. Parts are more expensive and so is the cost of repair.

What is wrong with the vehicle your driving now? If you looking for an investment, cars aren't the place for that unless you own something rare and desirable. No car, no matter what it is, isn't prone to having problems. Your better off sticking to the Honda you have. If you maintain and respect it, it will go for a long long time. Besides you'll need to money to pay off your college loan if you have one.

Response From afgballer4life

the car i have is a mess and i have some money and i wanna move up to another car
but i wanna know if E46 BMW 3 series models are reliable and are they much much more expensive for parts and repairs than hondas
i really wanna buy a BMW but i just want it to last and not break my wallet
thanks for the reply

OH GAWD!!!!! HERE WE GO AGAIN

Response From nickwarner

At 19 you've already blasted apart head gaskets, transmissions and clutches of everything you've touched and with the rate you're talking about insurance you've definately rcked up your share of tickets and maybe accidents. To put it in perspective, my insurance is $70 a month with 4 OWI, 3 driving after revocation AND taking 5 sheriff deputies on a high speed chase 5 years ago resulting in a high speed wreck of my truck. You beat the living hell out of everything you own and while you may be footing the bill on this next car at least in part the only way you got the other ones was from the Bank of Mom and Dad. Wish my parents were so giving. Now in your quest for the next car to drag race down the street trying to reenact The Fast and the Furious you are thinking of a sport exotic that costs a damn nice chunk of change new and will fall apart under your driving. It'll be a great lawn ornament.

Civics have a very solid track record of being reliable and trouble free but with you behind the wheel I can think of no vehicle at any price that will stand up to your abuse. If you want your transportation to be reliable, become amish and get a horse. At least it will have the good sense to ignore you when you get the next dumb idea. Might even buck you off and knock that silver spoon loose.

Treat your vehicle like you treat a good woman. If you treat it well and respect it it'll be a great ride for years to come without too much drama. Beat the crap out of it and you won't have it anymore.

Response From Tom Greenleaf Top Rated Answer

i really wanna buy a BMW but i just want it to last and not break my wallet

Do you think it's a coincidence that B.M.W. could be a cute acronym for Break My Wallet? Stay with mainstream cars and have it checked out pre-purchase. Forget sport packages and toys that aren't there to get from point A to point B with the least hassles. You are paying more for just insurance than it costs me for all expenses on two vehicles for EVERY expense to own them. What gives with that? Ask now what that insurance cost alone will be for a BMW vs a Honda. BMW IMO is for people who have the budget and don't have to worry about that for a whimsical car. Leave those for later when price is not object, T

Response From Discretesignals

Ok...I'll give you an estimate on clutch replacement for a 3 series.

Here in the states it's over a $1000. With the mileage on the one your looking at clutch replacement could be soon if it hasn't been done already. The plastic coolant system parts and hose couplers are prone to cracking. They also tend to leak oil from the oil pan and they have problems with the crankcase ventilation systems along with vacuum leak issues when they get up in age. If you are absolutely bent on getting one, have your mechanic check it over before you consider buying it to see what your getting into.
