'02 Pontiac Grand Prix 3.1 belt tensioner not lining up

Question From ASG5911 on '02 Pontiac Grand Prix 3.1 belt tensioner not lining up

serpentine belt broke, replaced. noticed that original tensioner didn't match up, thought it was bad, replaced. same problem with new one. all pulleys line up, tensioner is the odd man out. am I missing a spacer?

Response From Hammer Time Top Rated Answer

Looks to me like your harmonic balancer may be migrating out.

Response From Discretesignals

It sure does....good catch HT

Response From Tom Greenleaf

Top post said the failed one and new one were the same is a strong clue! As DS said - good catch HT,

T

Response From ASG5911

thanks for the info guys! is this a situation of tightening it or is it more serious?

Response From Tom Greenleaf

NO! You replace those not fix them! There's vulanized rubber between metal that can fail. Know that if that falls off there's no telling what damage could happen too,

T

Response From ASG5911

gotcha, that's why I asked the question. thanks for the help!

Response From Tom Greenleaf

By your pics for the exact car looks like you have room - it requires a puller rent-able if you want to do it yourself. Some (can't know all) you can get at thru a wheel well if too tight - dunno for sure on this exact one. Good luck - bet if you take a hard look you can verify that is in fact the problem,

T

Response From ASG5911

yeah that is definitely the problem.

Response From Discretesignals

Strange. There is an AC Delco tensioner and a Gates tensioner for a 4 door that looks like it is thicker.

Gates p/n 38353:

Compare your new tensioner to your old one, might not be the right one.

Click Clack noise toward front of car

Question From SanBrinkl on Click Clack noise toward front of car

I own a 1994 Bonneville, Pontiac. It has 172,000 miles on it. It has really been running good for the last 2 years, accept replacing the battery twice. I tis making a click clack sound towards the front of the car. I notice when I put my foot on the gas peddle, it stops. When it is idle, it makes noises. A mechanic at a dealership thinks it is the harmonic balancer. I plan on having it fixed this week. My question isit any danger in driving it in this condition. Also my air conditioner is on the blink. It comes out of the vents belowthe steering wheel, but does not come out of the vents on the dash panel. Thanks for any advice you may give me. I appreciate it.

Response From Tom Greenleaf Top Rated Answer

The vents are probably the control head or a stuck diverter door in heater box. You won't like the cost of either of those repairs.

The harmonic balancer is engine critical and if in fact it is bad it can destroy the engine with a failure. The problem is rare but if so must be fixed at once. Your call on whether you should even run the engine again till that's fixed. It's a gamble to run it at all if bad,

Im trying to get the timing chian cover off to see if i can see the problem , but need to make sure im turning the crank bolt the right way before itry removing it. Can anyone tell me what way to turn it.

Response From crocodilebobbie Top Rated Answer

Probably the noise is the harmonic balancer, rubber is broken or missing

Response From Loren Champlain Sr

Counter clockwise to remove.

99 grand am-replacing crankshaft pulley

Question From giorgio66613 on 99 grand am-replacing crankshaft pulley

99 Pontiac Grand Am not sure mileage....gonna be replacing crankshaft pulley on a 99 grand am...the pulley came off the inner ring which mounts to the crank itself...was wondering what i needa know...any special tools i should have and the steps. thanks.

Response From Hammer Time

Yes, you're going to need a puller and something really strong to get the center bolt out.

Response From giorgio66613

ive got an air impact....so should i worry about the crank rotating? do i need to keep it from doing that? do u have a quick list of procedure? i pulled tire off and took splash guard off and i can access it pretty well. should i drop the engine a bit?

Response From Tom Greenleaf

If you have a nice straight line shot thru the wheel well and a STRONG impact wrench that is a good start. With impact wrench engine should not just turn engine but just brute force would.

Try to make sure as best you can if there's room for the remainder of that damper to come off without any tricks like moving the engine. Wish I could say if that exact car will or wont but no software to help me help you so if no other knowns from the crew here use your judgement,

T

Response From Discretesignals Top Rated Answer

Not only do you need the harmonic balancer puller, but you need the installer also. Don't try beating the balancer on or using the bolt to pull the balancer on.

  4. Install the engine drive belt.

2.4L & 3.1L Engines

A crankshaft balancer holder is required along with a puller to remove and install the damper.
NOTE On the 2.4L and 3.1L engines after the balancer has been removed perform the CKP Learn Procedure.
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2. Remove the drive belt.
  3. Raise and safely support the front of the vehicle securely on jackstands.
  4. If necessary, remove the front wheel, right splash shield and transaxle converter cover.
  5. Retain the crankshaft while loosening the crankshaft damper bolt and washer.
  6. Remove the damper (balancer) and key using a puller.

To install:
NOTE An automatic transaxle damper must not be used on an manual equipped engine.
  1. Lubricate the front seal and sealing surface of the damper with chassis grease.
  2. Place the balancer onto the crankshaft indexing keyway. Tap into place using a rubber or sand filled mallet.
  3. Install the bolt and washer. Use a retailing tool to keep the crankshaft from turning. Tighten the damper bolt to proper torque specifications.
NOTE Do not use a torque angle meter to rotate the retaining bolt the additional 90°. The torque capacity of the tool will be exceeded and damage to the tool will result.
  4. On the 2.4L engine, tighten the bolt to specification while using the holding tool to prevent the crankshaft from turning. Place marks on the socket next to one to four marks on the tool. This mark will represent the zero point. Tighten the bolt by rotating the socket clockwise 90°. At the 90°, the socket indexes with the next mark on the tool.
  5. Install all remaining components.
  6. Perform the CKP Learn Procedure, using an OBD-II compliant scan tool.

3.4L Engine

NOTE This procedure requires the use of Special Tools J 24420-C Crankshaft Balancer Puller, and J 29113 Crankshaft Balancer Installer, or their equivalents.
  1. Remove the drive belt.
  2. Raise and support the vehicle.
  3. Remove the right front tire and wheel.
  4. Remove the right engine splash shield.
  5. Install a utility stand beneath the frame right side rail in order to support the frame/powertrain.
  6. Remove the two frame RIGHT side bolts.
  7. Use the utility stand to lower the frame in order to provide access to the crankshaft balancer.
NOTE The inertial weight section of the crankshaft balancer is assembled to the hub with a rubber type material. The correct installation procedures (with the proper tool) must be followed or movement of the inertial weight section of the hub will destroy the tuning of the crankshaft balancer.
  8. Remove the crankshaft balancer retaining bolt and washer.
  9. Remove the crankshaft balancer using the Crankshaft Balancer Puller, Special Tool No. J 24420-C, or equivalent.

  10. Clean and inspect the crankshaft balancer.

To install:
  1. Apply sealer GM P/N United States 12345739, Canadian P/N 10953541 or the equivalent to the keyway of the crankshaft balancer.
  2. Place the crankshaft balancer into position over the key in the crankshaft. Install Crankshaft Balancer Installer Special Tool No. J 29113, or equivalent onto the crankshaft.

Fig. Place the crankshaft balancer into position over the key in the crankshaft. Install Crankshaft Balancer Installer Special Tool No. J 29113, or equivalent onto the crankshaft
  3. Pull the crankshaft balancer into position.
  4. Remove the installer tool from the crankshaft balancer.
  5. Install the crankshaft balancer washer and bolt. Tighten as follows:
    1. Step 1: Tighten to 52 ft. lbs. (70 Nm)
    2. Step 2: Tighten an additional 72 degrees

  6. Use the utility stand in order to raise the frame/powertrain.
  7. Install new frame right side bolts.
  8. Install the right engine splash shield.
  9. Install the right front tire and wheel.
  10. Lower the vehicle.
  11. Install the drive belt.

Question From whitewolf on 1997 Pontiac Transport waterpump/crankshaft sensor thermastat

Hi guys, so my van started to overheat a bit and i popped the hood. the water pump was sprayen coolent everywhere. Also a bit of back story my 24x crankshaft sensor is not working right as my cooling fans are not working....yea just bought it too. So anyway im going to do the sensor water pump and thermastat. Anyone got some some advice on these jobs? havent done any of them bofore. its a 3.4l yea....thanks

Response From Hammer Time Top Rated Answer

There isn't an easier water pump anywhere than the 3.1/3.4. It's about 5 minutes with a blindfold on. Diagnosing your fans could be a lot more tricky since this is a 2 speed system using 3 relays together.

For the Crank sensor, you're going to need a puller to get the harmonic Balancer off.

Response From whitewolf

well while i am doing the rest of the work on the water pump and sensor i will replace the rad cap as well. i will change out the relays, and i guess i should test the fan motors as well.

Response From Hammer Time

What makes you think that changing the relays is going to help anything?

Response From whitewolf

Well at this point, pulling the temp sensor plug does kick the fans on. Does that point to the coolent temp sensor needing replaced?

Response From Hammer Time

No, it doesn't. It's supposed to do that. It merely indicates that the computer has control of high speed on the fans.

I have my doubts that there is any problem with the fans. There fans aren't supposed to come on until around 226 degrees.

Response From whitewolf

Well the temp guage depending on if i am at a stand still will go up to the 2nd line before the red, so its reading high for sure, i can also hear the overflow bubbling. so i would think that would make them turn on, no?

Response From Hammer Time

As long as it doesn't go into the red, you do not have a problem. Just let it idle and watch what it does. Don't shut it off unless it goes into the red. See if the fans come on and cycle back off. Like i told you, it is designed to run hotter at idle.
