I have a 1988 GMC S15 pick up. The idle is not stable and floating between 1600-1800. Is there anyone knows what this problem could be? Your answer will be very much appreciated.

Check that the gasket between the throttle body injection (TBI) unit and the intake manifold hasn’t failed. This was a very common problem that a section of the gasket would break away allowing un-metered air (vacuum leak) to enter the engine.

1988 GMC S15 4.3 4X4 Pickup - 109000 miles - will not shift into over drive. It seems to shift into lower gears at high rpms but after a couple miles at high speed it will not shift into OD and check engine light comes on.
Fulids all looks good.
Changed TPS and nothing changed.

That I don't know.
Local autoparts store can't read code on a model that old.

Of course not. It's OBD1. That doesn't mean it can't be done.

Here I was looking for suggestions to start troubleshooting without the code reader.

You can try it this way but it's pretty easy to read them wrong.



To extract a trouble from the computer for diagnostic purposes, the Assembly Line Communication Link (ALDL) connector is used.
Ground terminals A and B with the ignition "ON" and engine not running. The system will enter the diagnostic mode. In this mode, the computer will display a 12, three consecutive times, by flashing the "CHECK ENGINE", "SERVICE ENGINE SOON" or "MALFUNCTION INDICATOR LAMP" or light. A 12 consists of one flash, a short pause, then two flashes in rapid succession.
After 12 is displayed, any stored trouble s will be displayed by flashing the "CHECK ENGINE", "SERVICE ENGINE SOON" or "MALFUNCTION INDICATOR LAMP" light. All s are displayed 3 times each then a 12 will repeat. In the diagnostic mode, the computer will also energize all computer controlled relays and solenoids.

I have a 1990 GMC S-15 4.3 motor, When you start up the idle goes up and down to where sometimes it stalls out. have replaced tps, iss , and ecm. have checked for vacuum leaks. don't know what to look for next. any suggestions?

check for codes, clean TB esp the bleed hole for the IAC- double ck for Vac leaks- use spray trick- be sure EGR is seating sometimes carbon binds pintel.

EGR: Pintle as mentioned by DS could be not seating and to get a real clue take it out and look - carb cleaner thru it pushing pintle on block of wood or similar. Have a new gasket if removed as it will probably tear it up,

How are you checking for vacuum leaks? Un-metered air is going to confuse the thing especially at idle which is why it was mentioned early here. PCV system and all hoses. Right up to vacuum hose to brake booster - all possible places of throttle body, housing to manifold, manifold to heads etc.,

Also make sure your EGR valve isn't getting a vacuum signal at idle.

Just pull the hose off when it's idling and you will feel the vacuum. You will also hear the engine clear up if there was vacuum.

I had a 4.3 that idled up and down. Never stalled but does the problem clear out after running for a while? I suspected the alcohol --gas mix needed time to mix better. I changed gas stations for a while and stayed on premium gas, my problem when away.
