Question From rditzler on car stall when hot

1990 Pontiac 6000 V6. Stalls when hot. Am sure it is fuel related. New fuel filter, new fuel pump, cleaned out fuel tank. Restarts when cooled down.

Response From Sidom Top Rated Answer

How did you confirm that it was fuel related??

Question From e-armstrong60@live.com on Car wont start!

I had to replace the water pump on my 1992 Pontiac Sunbird LE and it wont run I can get it to start but it wont run.
Since then I have replaced Timing belt, Serpintine belt, Fuel pump, Fuel strianers, Fuel filter, Fuel Injectors, Cleaned Fuel tank, Altenator, and Battery.
I have also tripple checked the timming and it still wont run.

Response From Timthecarguy719

Seems like your saying fuel alot.
What about ignition?
Have you checked any of that?
Cap and rotor?
Ignition timing off?
Maybe theres a sensor bad.
So your saying the engine cranks over but will not start?

Response From Hammer Time

Monitor the fuel pressure while trying to start it.

Response From davidibrahim

I would like to recommend you to replace your old battery to the new one; It will be beneficial.

Question From troubledohc on 65 pontiac Startchief (young ricer owner needs help)

Besides from a lawn mower i don't mess with carburators to often. my grand pop bought this car in 65 he died in 1990. last time the car ran and was taged was in 96 . i got the car towed to me for my birthday .i slaped a battery in her tried to crank it (prolly a bad idea ) but i know im not getting gas .i can't find any information on this car where is the fuel pump located ? where is the filter located ? should the fuel pump buzz ? im going to throw fresh oil in her soon, but i need some kind of manual or a guru to help me out a bit. the car is a 65 pontiac starchief 389 2 jet rodchester carburator everything is original and im trying to avoid aftermarket (trying)

Response From Hammer Time Top Rated Answer

The fuel pump is mechanical and on the engine. You will likely have to replace the fuel lines from the tank as they get porous and the fuel pump will suck air. You may also have serious issues inside the fuel tank. You will have to remove it to find out.

Response From troubledohc

yikes i thought gas would keep everything clean .. what exactly is bad gas ? is it gas with moister ? or does it get gel like ? i was thinking seafoam but worried about seals ..

i wasn't getting anykind of gas going in the carburtator, so i dumped some fresh gas in the carburator seems like i was on the right track (wanted to fire up instead of just cranking over ).

tested for spark im getting spark from the distributor .is there like a .pdf or a manual anyone can pull for me ? i need some kind of mechanical map so i kno my way around this thing lol. and i can't find the fuel pump (unless it's under the car or in the tank)

and im not sure if it helps but i think they ran out the gas from the 90s it was stored in a garage sometimes under a tarp ..

im used to f/i 4 cylinders (it tells me what is wrong instead of goose hunting ) i need to just get it to start for now befor the restore (will be minor restore) and definitly having a fuel issue

Response From Hammer Time

The car hasn't run in 16 years. You can expect some serious deterioration to the fuel system

Response From re-tired

The price of GURU's has gone out of sight , so i found a source for manuals ....Pontiac Repair Manuals | Haynes, Chilton | The Motor Bookstore

I also ran across a freebee wiring diagram.....Pontiac wiring 1957-1965

Response From Discretesignals

You probably going to have to put a set of valve springs in it and make sure the valves aren't stuck in their guides.

Response From troubledohc

valves move good like i said it's in decent shape.. just bin sitting.. for the gas tank and fuel lines i should really look at.. it i guess i'll soak the carburator .new vaccumme lines, fuel pump, fuel filter, belts, what else u guys think ?

Response From Hammer Time

Soak the carburetor???????

Response From re-tired

"Soak the carb" You and the other "youngsters" havent heard of this procedure . You strip a carb down, removing all gaskets and soft parts. It is then placed in a tank of concentrated carb cleaner , about a hour it comes out spic and span . reassemble with new parts. And its ready to go.

Response From Hammer Time

Yeah, along with complete adjustment and setup during reassembly.

Response From re-tired

How hard could it be . you've seen one briggs&stratton ................Course this is a car so ya got to deal with tps and mixture control solenoid .

Response From Hammer Time

ya got to deal with tps and mixture control solenoid .

That wasn't more than a wet dream in '65

Response From Discretesignals

All it needs after you get it running is a sail. I wonder how many kids were conceived in the back of that car?

Response From re-tired

Tps ,mixture control , all mentioned in jest. Cutting edge technology in '65 was the 8 track and 16 channel CB. IF you were a wiz kid you had a linear amp and could skip all the way to NY.

Response From Hammer Time

IF you were a wiz kid you had a linear amp and could skip all the way to NY.

115 ft tower with Moonraker 4 beam on rotary and 20w kicker.

Response From re-tired

HT , your a CB'er .Nice base unit .We ,my dad and I had a moonbraker 8 . The main problem with such a system was its size ,its huge . And the fact it was directional which a 40ft crank up tower and a rotory head solved both problems . We also ran a BIG STICK I think it was about 10-15 ft.

Response From Hammer Time

Yes, I had a Big Stick on top of the beam also.

Response From chickenhouse

Response From re-tired

Response From Discretesignals

How did this thread go from a Poncho sitting around in some barn somewhere to rednecks on CB radios? For some reason I can picture a 120 ft radio tower sitting on top of HT's house.

Redneck hedge trimmer...lol

Response From Hammer Time

Is that guy in the picture cutting the hedge? Now, that's imagination!

Yes, and the best part is we stood it up by hand all in one piece. The antenna itself was 40 feet across. We had about 10 guys and some guy wire and walked it upright from the roof of my house and set it into it's base. When I think about it now, we were crazy. There were poles and electric wires in front of my house.

2003 Pontiac Grand Prix

Question From jimh74 on 2003 Pontiac Grand Prix

I have a 2003 Pontiac Grand Prix. In November of 2012, the fuel pump went out and I replaced it. The car started right up and ran fine until this week. It was running fine. I shut it off and it would not start again. It acted just as it had before when the fuel pump went out in November. Thinking this was the problem, I replaced the pump again and it did not work. I thought maybe I had got a faulty pump so I took it back and got another one and I got the same result as before. The car acts like it wants to start but it is not getting any fuel. I am out of ideas of what it could be.

Response From Discretesignals

Which engine?

What is the fuel pressure when it doesn't want to start? You'll need to connect a fuel pressure test gauge to the fuel rail test port.

Response From jimh74

It has a 3.1 liter engine. I do not have a pressure tester, but removing the flow line and holding my finger over the port while attempting to start the car resulted in no pressure being produced at all. Am about to replace the relay switch undr the hood. I had overlooked this before because I could hear and feel it click when the key was turned. However, I am only getting around four volts before and after the body block and at the module plug. Is it possible for a relay to allow a pump to come on but not pump fuel?

Response From Discretesignals Top Rated Answer

If the relay energizes and the pump turns on but no fuel comes out, then it isn't the relays fault. It would have to be a pump issue or empty fuel tank.

If you have only 4 volts at the pump module when the relay is energized, you have excessive resistance somewhere in the pump's power circuit. Did you try swapping relays in the box to see if you get the full 12 volts?

Response From millz387

Check your crankshaft and camshaft sensors. they both work with each other when it come to starting. My crankshaft sensor went out and the car died. Sounded like it wanted to start but not getting enough gas. Pressure test it on the fuel line rail , if ok it has to be your crankshaft sensor, has to do with car timing. Located on most behind Harmonic Balancer. Some vehicles have two camshaft sensors. Good Luck!

Response From Hammer Time

Milz387, Please refrain from giving advice on subjects that you are not versed in.

OP, please disregard the previous advice and continue testing.

Question From shannon1919 on 2004 Pontiac Grand Am

Please help, car wouldn't start today. When i turn the key everything sounds the same but won't start. Two days ago it started kind of hard, thought it was because I was almost out of gas, filled up tank and everything was fine until today. Any ideas appreciated..

Response From jollyroger359 Top Rated Answer

if the vehicle was started and ran extremely low on gas there is a chance ( a small chance) that it sucked up the trash that rests on the bottom of the fuel tank and clogged the fuel filter, and the engine isnt getting fuel. a new fuel filter runs about $20 and is easily replaced in about 15 minutes, so its worth the time and money.
try this: remove your air filter and spray a quick shot of starting fluid (ether) into the intake, then imediately try to start the car. if it fires for a split second off the starting fluid, then you know its not getting any fuel. if it doesnt, then you're problem may be more complicated, and unfortunately, more costly
