I need to replace a fuel tank sending unit in my 2001 Honda Passport. Any idea where to find the sending unit? I heard under the passenger seat or the back cargo area but I would like to know for sure before I start tearing apart areas I dont need to. Thanks.

1997 Honda CRV blue exhaust smoke

Question From Enoch Mutti on 1997 Honda CRV blue exhaust smoke

My Honda CRV engine number B20B - 1046827 has started letting out plumes of blue smoke particularly when reversing. In the morning when starting both water and smoke come out. I have had varying opinions from replace oil rings to cleaning the fuel tank and changing valve seals. The problem started a couple of months ago after a changing oil and spark plugs.

Response From Hammer Time Top Rated Answer

Pull one of the valve covers off and see if the engine is sludged up inside.
Did anyone recently do one of those "engine flushes"?

1989 Honda Civic engine start problem (very strange)

Showing 2 out of 9 Posts | Show 7 Hidden Posts
Question From Zaras on 1989 Honda Civic engine start problem (very strange)

Hey guys!

I have an 1989 Honda Civic with 1.5l dual point injection engine.

I noticed that my mileage per gallon is low, but i did nothing about it, because the engine was running REALLY good!
After a couple of weeks, i poured in some fuel in a gas station (the fuel tank was almost empty). I drove just half of a mile from the gas station and it suddenly lost all power and died after a few minutes of rough working. Now it won't start.

If i spray some fuel with a syringe directly into the intake manifol, the engine starts and works for a few seconds untill the sprayed-in fuel is over. The strange thing is that the fuel pressure is good and the fuel injector is spraying fuel. (injector is new)

Can it be bad fuel or maybe one of the engine sensors? (the ECU light doesn't show any engine problems) I think that the poor gas mileage is a different problem.

Maybe you guys have any idea what the problem is?

The car is old, but i LOVE it so i'm gonna do anything to get it started!

Thanks in advance

P.S. excuse me for my poor English, hope you'll understand what i mean

Response From steve01832

When you said the fuel pressure was good, did you check it with a guage or are you assuming because you saw fuel coming out of the injector? Your engine needs about 35 psi of fuel at the injector to run. Hook up a fuel pressure guage and let us know. Check it Key On Engine Off, then Engine Running.

Steve

Response From Zaras

Actually i just saw the injector spraying fuel, that's why i assumed the pressure was good.
I made one test - make the fuel pump work for 10 seconds non stop and measure the amount of fuel coming out of the return hose.
There supposed to be ~230 cubic centimeters, but i got just around 50-60.
So i'll just replace the fuel filter and then the fuel pump if necessary.
It's harder to find time for that because i just bought 1996 Civic S4 VTi. It's AWESOME

Thanks for your help guys!

Response From steve01832

When you go to replace the fuel pump, pull out the rear seats. There should be an access plate that you unbolt and the fuel pump module is just below that. I'm pretty sure that applies to your car. Check for that first, it sure beats dropping the tank.

Steve

Response From sUpermaRioX

i've had that problem befor, check the fuel injectors, when i had my car, i took it into the shop and when they checked the fuel injectors they were reading really low. trying checking them.

Response From Zaras

I already replaced the injectors earlier

Response From Tom Greenleaf

It's pretty rare but that sounds exactly like bad gas. Tough to tell but if you put in a new fuel filter and it behave for a while that would about prove it.

A suggestions for readers: Don't buy gas while the station is getting gas. There is crud at the bottom of their tanks that is normal and when all stirred up you can get that. The owner of the gas station was deliquent at checking the stations tanks and it showed up with cars that didn't make it far from getting gas - I worked there and trust me we don't and I know of none who purposely add water but it does occur by condensation and it simply gets pumped out periodically, T

Response From Zaras Top Rated Answer

That's what i thought later too!
I emptied the fuel tank and poured a couple of gallons on new gas.
Still won't start...

Response From Tom Greenleaf

It can take a few tries after the engine thinks it's out of fuel to purge out air. You still need to try a new fuel filter which makes more air. Just go easy on the starter motor or you could add that to the problem, T

1998 Accord Rusted fuel tank/sitting for 7 mos.

Question From Tim932 on 1998 Accord Rusted fuel tank/sitting for 7 mos.

I have a 1998 Honda Accord EX (2.3 L). Last June it started leaking gas and the mechanic told me the gas tank is rusted and needs to be replaced. I could not afford to get it fixed so it has been sitting in the driveway since July and has not been started.

I didn't know I needed to start it periodically to prevent other problems. Now the battery is dead as well. I'm trying to find out what I can/should do before taking it in to have the gas tank repaired in order to minimize how much I'll have to spend on the repairs.

Advice will be greatly appreciated!

Response From Sidom

I'm not real sure of the answer you are looking for here but you are correct....If a car is sitting it's best to start it & run it periodically & if possible, drive it.

Since your tank is leaking, it would be dangerous to have gas in it to run it so your 1st step would be to replace the tank and going off your post, if that is all that is wrong with it, then after that repair you would be back on the road and following a normal maintence schedule again...

I guess the only thing I would recommend would be to tow it to the shop....

If it's still going to be sitting for a while, you could put it on blocks and cover the car but I wouldn't recommend running it with a fuel leak....

Response From Tim932

That's really what I was looking for. I was wondering if I could save money by doing some of the work to get it running again myself (replace the battery, change oil, etc.) but if the fuel tank should be repaired before any of those other things are addressed, I'll just have it towed and hope for the best on the bill.

Thank you!

Response From Sidom Top Rated Answer

No problem....

You definitely want to address all those maintenance issues since it's been sitting.....and you can do all that yourself, just make sure the tank is going to get fix within a short amount of time of doing all these maintenance things or you'll be doing them all over again if for some reason something happens and the car sits for months again....

Response From Tim932

I'll be getting the tank replaced very soon.

But let's say I get the battery recharged or replaced. Can I do further damage to the car if I try to start it? Would it be dangerous to try to start it?

Response From Sidom

Well....like I said earlier....The 1st step is to repair the tank....If it's rusty & leaking then even if it had fuel in it you wouldn't want to start it because of the leak, that could start a fire. Also you don't want to suck all that rust through the fuel line.....

Change the oil, coolant, filters, battery but don't try to start it until it's safe....

Now if you haven't been doing maintenance routinely on this car where you familar with doing it.....It might be better to just have the shop do this along with the tank.....If you do something wrong, this might cause a problem on start up at the shop & wind up costing you more...

I'll let you be the judge of that.....If this is the 1st time you've done any of this.......Let the shop do the maintenance items and then you can do them later on as needed....

Response From Tim932

Gotcha. I will let the shop handle it, then. Thank you again!

1999 Honda shadow ace 750 dies when driving over 55mph

Question From Buglermatthew on 1999 Honda shadow ace 750 dies when driving over 55mph

I have a 1999 Honda shadow ace 750. It has 16000 miles and is in great condition, it drove it home in march over an hour on the freeway. I have not risen it much since then but every time I do it runs great around the neighborhood. Whenever I go on the highway, or over 55 mph it loses power and then dies.

Response From zmame

I vote partially plugged tank inlet screen, fuel filter or failing fuel pump. or possible electrical issues. You need to see what it missing when it wont start fuel or spark.. I know these carbs have very fine jets and if you let them get gummed up your screwed. You have to get it rebuilt with someone that has a ultrasonic cleaner.

Next time it stalls out try applying the choke slowly and see if it fires up if it does that indicates a lean condition (not enough fuel).

Response From Mr.scotty

Yeah, bikes with carbs dont like to sit with fuel in them for long.
Dirty carbs are probably the most common thing i have to fix on bikes, atv's,lawn mowers, ect... cause people never drain the gas out on them before storage.

Response From Mr.scotty Top Rated Answer

If my memory serves me right, this has twin carburetors right?
If the bike has been sitting a long time I would pull both carbs and clean and rebuild them, might want to remove the fuel tank and clean it out and replace the strainer in the petcock.
After that carb adjustments may be necessary.

PS: A valve adjustment would not hurt either while the tank is removed.
