1976 Ford E-350 Cube Van w/DUAL FUEL TANKS Not Getting Fuel To The Fuel Pump - Brand New Fuel Pump and Filter / Removed Fuel Line At Carb Inlet Redirected into "Catch Can" Primed Carb w/Gas Truck Fires-Up And Runs Until The Primer is Gone But NO FUEL Pumping Into Catch Can. Don't Use Truck Very Often But Try To Start it Regularly / Ran Most Recently 2 Weeks Ago 5/23/09 - Have Had To Prime it For Years To Get it To Fire Up - Now Won't Stay Running AT ALL / WHAT'S THE PROBLEM? Suspect Dual Fuel Tank Selector Valve More So Than A Plugged Line? - Where Do I Get a 34 Year Old Fuel Tank Selector Valve if That's The Problem? - Please Advise Leon

Response From Tom Greenleaf Top Rated Answer

Basics on this: Mechanical fuel pumps have little suction power and if the line to the fuel has a leak it could be sucking air. You need to know that/those are good. A bit odd that it also doesn't leak but possible as I suspect a bad stretch of fuel line metal or rubber??

1990 Ford f-150 Gas Gauge malfunction?

Showing 2 out of 3 Posts | Show 1 Hidden Posts
Question From Robertak on 1990 Ford f-150 Gas Gauge malfunction?

Ford F-150 1990.
The gas gauge will be at empty, then when i step on the gas it goes all the way up passed the full mark and stays there. Then when i hit the gas again it will go all the way back to empty. never giving me the correct reading. Also when i switch fuel tanks it says my rear tank is passed full and stays there when i know its empty. Any Ideas and if so thank you for your help.
Robert

Response From re-tired Top Rated Answer

The problem has to be related to the fuel tank selector switch. This unit does all the work. When you're in "front tank mode" the selector switch sends 12 volts to power the electric fuel pump in the front tank. At the same time it connects the fuel gauge sending unit in the front tank to the fuel gauge in the instrument cluster. When you select the rear tank it does the opposite, and hooks up the pump and sending unit in the rear tank.

It sounds like there may be bad contacts within the fuel tank selector switch causing you grief. Most shops can usally can confirm and fix in a short amount of time.

Response From Robertak

What would I be looking at in prices for that? Is it something I can do myself or should i just take it in? And thanks for your help.

Strange electric wires near fuel cap Ford Focus??

Question From rawness on Strange electric wires near fuel cap Ford Focus??

Hi,

I'm about to buy a second hand car from a dealer. The car is a 2011 1.6 Ford Focus Saloon. I seen the attached electric wires exposed where the fuel goes in. The dealer said he didn't know what it was but said it would be fixed if I bought the car. Am interested to find out what it is though.

Any ideas? Thanks,
Raw

Response From rawness

No, am not a spy!
It looks bad to me and am suspicious that there was some repair done here. I'll speak to the dealer today and see what he says....
Thanks.

Response From Sidom

Yea, that's weird.....definitely doesn't look factory........Almost looks like some type of switch...

Response From Hammer Time Top Rated Answer

I think it's an igniter designed explode the fuel tank during fill up. Are you a spy?

Response From Discretesignals

That vehicle is not sold here in the states, so really don't know what that is. It does look like someone at one time has had the filler neck or inside paneling apart.

1995 Ford F350 not getting fuel

Question From Twistedsteel92 on 1995 Ford F350 not getting fuel

Hello, I am having a fuel issue with a 1995 Ford F350 that has the 460 engine. The odometer shows 250,000 miles but the engine looks like it was replaced somewhere along the way. The truck was running at an idle and then stopped. When I turn the key to the start position I do not hear the pump cycle. The front fuel pump is about a year old and I replaced the fuel filter at the time I replaced the pump. The rear pump was also working at the time the truck stopped and now neither one will cycle. I have not found information online specific to this problem. There are postings about the fuel relay and the fuel tank selector switch on the dash. Any help would be appreciated.

Response From Discretesignals

You need to locate the fuel pump relay. Then have someone turn the ignition on while you feel or hear the relay to see if it clicks on and then off. If it clicks, that means the PCM is commanding the relay. From there you check the relay itself to make sure it doesn't have bad contacts. If the relay is good, check for power in the relay cavity on pin 30 with the ignition on. If you have power, put the relay back in and check for power down at the pump connector on which ever tank you have selected.

Let us know what you find out. If you get to the pump and have power or not after checking up at the relay or the relay doesn't click, we'll give you further info.

Response From Twistedsteel92

Can you tell me which one of the relays is the fuel relay? There are three in the fuse box under the hood. I swapped the three relays and did not hear the pump cycle. I am going to drop the front tank and check the pump. As I mentioned I do not hear either pump cycle when I move the ignition to the run position. Can you tell me what the PCM is?

Response From Twistedsteel92

I put the key in the run position and moved the fuses in the box under the hood to the closest position to the driver fender. Each of them makes a clicking sound when in the first position. There is also one that was added by someone that is also clicking when moved to the first position in the fuse box. Is ther a way to check the fuel selector switch or jump it?

Response From Sidom

What are you using to test for power? Test light, Voltmeter, etc???

Response From Twistedsteel92

I used the fuse box under the hood. The 1st plug is hot when the key is in the run position. I pulled the pump and the filter that attaches to the pump decomposed and might have been drawn into the pump. I connected a battery charger to the pump and it does not cycle. I tried reversing the = & - and it tried to cycle but did not. I am going to try to replacing the pump.

Response From Sidom

I'm not to sure how you would use a fuse box to check for voltage.

But if you already have the pump out then it sounds like you're gonna change it.

Just becareful jumping those, they have fuel in them and they really aren't designed to run dry. You could damage the pump or even hurt yourself...

Good luck

Response From Twistedsteel92

The first responder said to check the relay by listening for the "click" when it opens when power is applied. They all make the clicking noise when power is applied to them. I don't know which one of the three is the fuel pump relay and can not find a diagram online. I will get the pump tomorrow and let you know if that corrects the problem. I am not sure if the rear pump is also out but it does not cycle on when I select that tank. The truck was running fine and then just stopped. Like I said the strainer looks like it decomposed and maybe that was drawn into the pump.

Response From Sidom

Well since you have it out and it's marginal it might be best to just change it out.
You can listen & feel relays and that will let you know something is active.
If for some reason the new pump doesn't work then you are probably going to want to get a hold of a voltmeter or 12v test light so you can chase the problem down....

I'm assuming you have already check the inertia switch to make sure it didn't get tripped. It's in one of kick panels or on the floor board under the dash.....

Response From Discretesignals Top Rated Answer

I imagine if the pump ate pieces of the sock that would trash the pump. Make sure that there isn't anything laying down in the bottom of the fuel tank before installing your new pump. The sock doesn't filter out small pieces of metal or other small contaminants.

Response From Hammer Time

I hope you checked the Inertia switch

94 ford f150 pops/sputters

Question From Guest on 94 ford f150 pops/sputters

my 94 ford f150 5.0 will occasionally pop or sputter (misfire)and loses power for no reason? And then it will suddenly"catch" and accelerate. I have tried to recall the circumstance at each occurance, and I think it happens more when fuel tank is 1/4 or less. (could be coincidence)I filled it tonigt and took a drive, no problems. veh. has 80,000 + miles.

Response From way2old

From your description and from the description only, I would venture a guess that maybe the fuel sending unit is faulty and giving a bad reading to the gauge. So, without having it to check, I would just be sure it has over 1/4 tank. When it starts sputtering and you fill it up, how many gallons does it take?

Response From Guest

This truck has 2 tanks, when I fill the tank or tanks they seem to take the amount of fuel they should. I should have mentioned that the last occurence was a heavy rain day, I dont recall if the other times were. I switched to the rear tank which was 3/4 full and the problem continued. I am guessing at wires or water in the tank(s) I did add a bottle of "Heet" as well as a bottle of concentrated injector cleaner to both tanks. I will be changing plugs, wires, cap and fuel filter on saturday.

Response From Guest

Well, went through whole tuneup procedure, changed plugs, cap, wires, plugs, fuel filter, timing etc. the problem persists. Not really sure how to check the fuel for water? Thinking of syphoning some out of tank into clear bottle and see if it seperates? Does water float on top of gasoline?

Response From Tom Greenleaf

Does water float on top of gasoline? .......................

No - the other way, water on the bottom. Tanks, filters, even carbs used to come with drains on the bottom,

fuel and water. The upper (lighter) colored liquid is fuel (oil floats on water). The water is in the bottom, and it's rusty brown.

This may help,

Response From Guest

This is the second engine in this vehicle,(long before I purchased it) I wired it from specs on a 1994 5.0 litre, is there a way to find out what year my engine actually is? where would I find a serial number or code on the engine? Has the firing sequence changed model year to model year?

Response From dave284

The vehicle has a OBI system computer it might have stored some trouble codes, but it will need to be read with a OBI scanner tool.

Response From way2old Top Rated Answer

Go to this site for a way to read codes without a scanner. Also check the TPS to be sure it is not having a fault.

Response From dave284

W20 , good thinking, and water in the fuel another possibilty
