1995 Buick Park Avenue fuel guage issues

Showing 4 out of 4 Posts
Question From Hillbilly910 on 1995 Buick Park Avenue fuel guage issues

had the fuel tank replaced awhile back, car goes from full tank to empty(according to guage) in 200-225 miles.
18 gallon tank, and runs flawlessly. Tank was installed by mechanic.
Im certain the tank is no-where near empty when guage says it is empty, but would rather not leave it to the driver to find out the hard way, anything i can check or do to see whats up, and anything i can do to correct the guage?

Thanks

HB

Response From Hammer Time

That's pretty easy. Fill it up and see how much it takes.

Response From Hillbilly910

poorly worded on my part...
any way to re-calibrate the fuel guage without removing the fuel tank?

HB

Response From Hammer Time Top Rated Answer

No, you can't even do it with the tank removed unless you find the float al bent annd even then it would have to be replaced.

Question From PyroDragon89 on 1998 Buick humming noise

1998 Buick Century Custom, V.6 3.1 liters, 132000 miles

My 1998 Buick Century Custom has a weird humming noise almost as if air was leaking out of the tires along with a electrical sound. Its not the tires it stops when car is turned off. Also its coming from under the rear part of the car. Anyone know what this could be? It just recently started to make this noise as well.

Response From Hammer Time Top Rated Answer

If you can hear it with the car running but not moving, then it's probably the fuel pump getting noisy. It's inside the fuel tank.

Response From PyroDragon89

Does that mean it has to be replaced?

Response From Hammer Time

It's usually a warning that failure is imminent but i had one do that for 2 years before failing. That doesn't mean yours will though.

Response From Tom Greenleaf

What the ever loving hell do people think cars will last? 132K it's done so throw UPS cars out and cut your losses. Your call,

Tom

Response From Hammer Time

132K is half it's life these days. I regularly see cars pushing 300K and still running good.

Response From Tom Greenleaf

Bullshit - everything is crap out there not like American Iron of yesteryear. One head gasket job with an old or rusted car exceeedds it's value. Drive an '89 (last decent year) Lincoln. Why the heck when something was done right is there some new rule to change it?!

Can get 26 MPG with six dead engineers in the trunk no problem!

What happened out there?

Tom

Response From Hammer Time

Let me know when your 89 hits 300K.

Response From Tom Greenleaf

They can do that like nothing but here rust out first if you use them

Tom

Response From Discretesignals

Why the heck when something was done right is there some new rule to change it?!

You can blame the government for that. Stricter emissions and higher fuel mileage requirements. The evolution of the automobile to survive in it's pre-planned environment.

Response From Tom Greenleaf

Congress and Regress are close in spelling!

Tom

Response From zmame

Yeh my old 97 chev truck as 420,000 km (260975 miles).. im convinced it gets better and better on fuel because all the sheet metal i've lost.

No more rockers, cab corner, rear bumper, some of the tailgate and I lost the spare tire about 4 years ago lol..

Response From Tom Greenleaf

Never mind this thead - great to see you here!

Tom

Response From zmame

fair enough lol.. good to hear from you again Tom hope all is well on your side.

Response From Tom Greenleaf

Still kicking so means I'm alive or something?

Things are well in Massatwoshits but didn't watch local news for a couple days so no telling who raped someone or what??

Don't you just love evening news that says "Good Evening" then proceeds to tell you why it isn't??!!

We got to deal with this somehow??

Question From Guest on 1996 buick regal

i have a 1996 buick regal how do change fuel pump and does it have a rest

Response From Tom Greenleaf Top Rated Answer

Most fuel pumps (electric) are in the fuel tank which almost always needs to be taken out to replace it. Best to empty the gas tank as it would be heavy and spill gas for removal.

WARNING! This can be dangerous as you are dealing with fuel. Strange but an empty tank can explode and a full one just makes a monster fire. Use all caution not to make sparks of any kind, T

PS: What did you mean "Does it have a rest?"

Response From Guest

thank you for the reply

my ford thunderbird has a reset on it but i could not find one on the buick for the fuel pump

Response From Tom Greenleaf

Some Fords put it in the trunk. They are there to shut off the fuel in case of a collision and I haven't found many to be wrong but it's worth a check if that's all it is, T

Question From connor on transmission

i changed my fuel pump in my 1997 buick leasbre with 16000 miles on and i started it then moved it off the ramps and now its stuck in high gear now i hook up battery and the hood lite blinkd twice and goes out

Response From Discretesignals

Wow, only 16K miles on a 97?

Does the engine crank?

Need more information.

Response From connor

runs like new i put new fuel pump in it and went to move it off ramps and its like it is stuck in high gear when i un hook battery and hook it up the hood lite blinks twice and goes out but there was no engine lite on before tank removal no it has 160 000 and i have it half way up ramps in 3 2 1 i cant push it back if i put it in od i can

Response From Discretesignals

So the engine is running now, but when you take off the transmission is in another gear other than 1st?

Why did you replace the fuel pump?

Response From connor

it went bad

Response From Discretesignals Top Rated Answer

If the engine is running now, the transmission may have defaulted into 3rd gear. When the transmission solenoids lose power or ground, the transmission will only have 3rd and reverse.

Did you do anything else besides drop the fuel tank and change the fuel pump? Do you have a code reader?

Response From connor

reverse works well as it should my friend came down and did the obd and got codes

Response From Discretesignals

What are the code numbers?

Response From connor

p0740 po753 po758 p1655 p1675 po135 po140 po740 p0753 po758 p1655

Response From Discretesignals

You have a bunch of solenoid electrical codes. Pull the electrical connector off the front of the transmission. There will be a pink wire. If you have a meter or test lamp check for battery voltage on the pink wire with the ignition turned on.

The connector will be above the vacuum modulator in the picture below.

Response From connor

i will try rite now

Response From connor

no power at all to pink wire

Response From connor

will computer do that

Response From Discretesignals

There is a fuse in the fuse panel in the engine bay. The fuse is labeled MISC ENG fuse 5 20 amp. Check the fuse. Is the fuse good?

Response From connor

its good

Response From Discretesignals

With the fuse plugged in check for power at the fuse with the ignition turned on. You should have power on both sides of the fuse.

Response From connor

there is

Response From Discretesignals

If you have power at the fuse but no power at the pink wire at the connector for the transmission with the ignition turned on, you have an open circuit pink wire in the harness somewhere. Inspect the harness and wiring really good that goes from the transmission to the main harness for the engine. Make sure the harness isn't rubbing on anything or has damage.

Response From connor

i will and ty vm

Response From connor

i traced the wires from plug in off trans and they go to that big box on drivers side fender and there is two connctors that bolt on top with all the wires

Response From connor

thats it just fuel pump

Response From connor

i dont

Response From connor

yes in second i believe but when i park it half way on ramps in over drive i can push it back but any of 3 2 1 i cant feels like brake is on

Response From connor

when its running

Rough idle 1999 Buick Century

Question From azronin on Rough idle 1999 Buick Century

My first attempt:

1999
Buick
Century
3.1 Liter
Roughly 165,000 miles

Problem:

Starts okay but idles rough. It will rev up about every 10 seconds then goes back to idling roughly. If I hold the throttle slightly, it seems to idle a little smoother.

Codes:
P0440 Evaporative Emission control system malfunction.

What I've tried:
1) New gas cap - problem remains.
2) Clear code with rented scanner - problem remains.

I purchased a replacement "Purge Valve" and a Haynes manual but I cannot find the part.

Any suggestions?

Response From Hammer Time Top Rated Answer

The PO440 has nothing to do with the way the engine is running. That is a fuel tank vapor code.

For the engine problem.

You may have a bad IAC ( idle air control) but try eliminating any vacuum leaks and cleaning the throttle body first. Remove the intake snorkel, have someone hold the throttle wide open for you and scrub the back side of the throttle plate and surrounding bore with an old tooth brush and some carb cleaner. Be sure to spray some into the small holes next to the throttle plate. That should help stabilize the idle. If it still has a problem, replace the IAC.

Response From azronin

Okay, I replaced the Idle Air Control and IT SEEMS TO HAVE CORRECTED THE PROBLEM!
I thank you for getting me on track.

I have one other question:
I didn't clean the throttle body per your instructions. I just replaced the IAC. Is that still required?

I'll do it if you think it's best. I took the short cut because I live in Phoenix and it's about 800 degrees F. Today we've got high humidity so it feels hotter.

Response From Hammer Time

I wouldn't have told you to do it if it wasn't important

Response From azronin

Problem solved. Thank you again.

Response From Hammer Time

You're welcome

Response From azronin

Thanks, I'll take care of it now.

Response From azronin

I'll try it. Thank you.
