Question From kmlysek@juno.com on 1988 Plymouth Grand Voyager

1988 Plymouth grand voyager3.0 engine. The fuel pump is not functioning all the time. Only once in a while will it pump fuel. I am trying to locate the fuel pump relay which the haynes manuel refers to but can not locate it. The wiring diagram refers to it and the trouble shooting guide refers to it but only says "locate fuel pump relay and replace" I am lost. The only relays I can locate are the auto shut down, the ac fan, the ac clutch, the horn, the and one more I cannot remember. All of them are located on the fender and located in the wiring diagrams on the fender. The fuel pump relay is only located as cavity 25 and "see sheet 116" which does not exist in the haynes manuel. HELP

kmlysek@juno.com

Response From motorheadII

The ASD relay runs the fuel pump.

Response From kmlysek@juno.com

By the way. Thanks for the input. I am having a hard time with this haynes manual.
Ken

Response From Tom Greenleaf Top Rated Answer

The mauals at the McParts stores are limited. You get what you pay for! For locations of relays etc., try the silly owner's manual, you might be surprised what's in there, Good luck with the fix,

Response From motorheadII

DanD will be along after a while. He's a genius at posting diagrams and such.

Response From kmlysek@juno.com

I see that but the haynes also has wiring for a fuel control relay. The wiring appears to be seperate for the fuel pump. It looks like both have to be engages for the fuel pump to work. I think I need to locate the fuel pump relay. HELP

Response From motorheadII

Sorry, don't have a diagram or componet locater in front of me. My statement above is based on a diagram I looked at last week. Yours may be different.

Question From tomberray29 on replaced fuel pump and filter in plymouth breeze still wont start

i have a 96 pymouth breeze i just replaced a fuel pump and filter, but i still dont get no gas to the carburator. it starts and run when i pour gas in to the carburator.chrysler plymouth breeze engine size 2.0 5 speed

Response From Hammer Time Top Rated Answer

You don't have a carburetor. You have a throttle body.

Test for injector pulse using a small bulb called a noid light. If none found, check for power supply at one side of the injector with the key on.

Use a fuel pressure gauge to test for correct fuel pressure, also noticing if the pressure holds when key is shut off.

Question From zx6rf7 on 1995 plymouth acclaim Only starts when it wants to

I have a 1995 Plymouth Acclaim with a 4 cylinder 2.5l engine. It will run good for a couple of days and then it decides it doesn't want to start. It will turn over but it won't fire, it seems to be tripping the auto shut off relay. I changed the engine controller and the shut off relay figuring it was one or the other but they where not the problem. I have been told it might be the Hall Effect Pickup, and to jump a wire between the battery positive and the ignition coil positive to determine if thats the problem. Any Ideas??

Response From DanD

When the car doesn’t start have you checked for the lack of spark or fuel?
Running a jumper wire to the ignition coil is not how to check the pick-up coil. If your no start is from lack of spark and you want to test the pick-up coil, you have to jumper a cross two of the three terminals of the wiring harness at the distributor. By making and breaking this connection as quickly as possible you will fool the SMEC (computer) to think it’s receiving an ignition pulse from the Hall Effect pick-up coil.
I’m not a very good artist but have a look at this attempt of a drawing as to which two to jumper.
Here’s how to do the test.
Disconnect the distributor’s wiring harness at the base of the distributor, turn the ignition switch to the run position, with a jumper wire make and break the connection (I’ve shown in the diagram). Make sure it’s the wiring harness side of the terminal you are jumping not the distributors harness.
As you are doing this you should hear the ASD (auto shut down, relay) and fuel pump relay activate, along with the ignition coil arcing a spark, that’s if you have the ignition coil set up to test for spark.
The pick-up is easy to replace undo the distributor cap, remove the ignition rotor and the pick-up coil is sitting there to be lifted off. There is a locator on one of the pick-up coils attaching through holes, so be careful not to install the new one 180 degrees out of alignment from where it should be.
Dan.

Response From zx6rf7

Thanks Dan I tried the wire test I was getting the Autoshutoff relay to turn on and off and could also here some sounds from the distributor area. I haven't checked for spark lately since this is been and on going problem but I did have spark before and I have changed the igintion coil as well a cap rotor and wires. As for fuel I am not getting the priming cycle So that is why I was figuing it was the Hall effect pickup. But the only thing that is screwing me up is that I am not getting the code showing that there is no igntion signal from the pick up
What do you think???

And do you think I should test for spark at the coil and How??

Response From Tom Greenleaf

Just my two cents. A totally flooded out car may not start without new plugs or burning them to a glow. Careful if you try that. Rare but distributer bearings and the "hall Effect" will screw up. Check dwell and no more that 5 degrees change is right with raised RPM. Good luck with the fix, T

Response From zx6rf7

I changed the pick up and still no luck it doesn't want to start it just turns over. I also unpluged the map sensor to see if that was the problem but it didn't work either. I am going to check for spark again tomorrow, Any other ideas to check??

Response From DanD

Well if you can hear the ASD when you’re jumping the pick-up harness you know that the SMEC can recognize an Ignition pulse and the noise you’re hearing from the distributor is likely spark jumping the ignition rotors air gap.
Now try (with a helper) to see whether you have spark during cranking, the way it sounds you know how to so I wont go into explaining, if not let me know.
With you saying you don’t hear the fuel pump prime cycle, I would be going back to the fuel pump connector at the tank and checking whether you have power to the fuel pump. If you do and you have ground at the connector the pump may be at fault for the no start.
I can’t remember what the wire color is off hand but there are only a few wires back there and one should have power to it during initial key on lasting couple of second (prime cycle), during cranking (constant power) and it should last a couple of seconds after cranking. It may be a blue or green wire?
Dan.

Response From zx6rf7

Got it running by wiggling the wires behind the batteryand taking a couple of connectors apart. but then I couldn't get it not to start to try to find where exactly the problem is so it is going to take the next time it quits to find the problem. Thanks for your help

Response From Tom Greenleaf

Intermittent problems are a major cause of hair loss! They are like fixing Christmas lights!!!! Touch somthing they work - touch something else they fail. Trash can !! and off to a store. Cars are too expensive for that. Keep at it and keep your hair! It's your car so you have a chance to catch it. Imagine the bazillion cars that go to a shop working perfectly. Got the T-Shirt! What the heck are you supposed to do?? There are some where you can make a good guess. This is where info from the customer is critical.

Be well all, enjoy fall if it is where you are, T

Response From zx6rf7

Well the car is running but it quits wiggle the wires and it runs again. I looked at the wiring today and i didn't find anything but I was looking at the wiring diagram in the Haynes manual there is a splice that comes off the ASR and then splices to the fuel pump and different ignition componets But I wasn't able to locate this splice to check it. I was wondering if anybody knew where this splice is located or have the actual wiring diagram of a 1995 2.5l acclaim.

Response From Tom Greenleaf

Seems like you found the spot!! You can take apart a connecter and just gentlty torque a tad on the male side spade of the connection - grease it all up (dielctic or silicone best) and give it a go. WD-40 works too but doesn't last as long as the greases. Good luck - let us know, T

Response From DanD

Your probably talking about the dark blue wire it’s been known to give problems, the splice they used for this is stamp welded and then just taped to insulate it.
In most newer car models wiring diagrams they will tell you where all the splices are but not back then, at least not on the diagrams I have, so posting the diagrams I have wont help you to find its location.
I think you’ll find it within 1 to 2 feet of the relays and all I can suggest is to carefully open up the harness until you find the corroded connection.
Don’t overlook the connectors at the relays, the actual connector may fit nice and tight but the individual terminals can corrode and make an intermittent connection.
I’m also just assuming it’s the dark blue wire so do not neglect any of the others leaving the ASD relay any one could cause the system to shut down.
It’s not hard work just very frustrating if you do not find it right away.
Dan.

Response From zx6rf7

I'll check those connectons. The wire I was thinking about is a green and red one that according to what i have should feed the fuel pump and injector parts

Response From zx6rf7

The car still isn't starting right we have been wiggling wires and it runs Ok and the next time you start it you have to wiggle them again. I haven't been able to find the bad wire. I was wondering if it is possible to change out the whole wiring harness on the car so that I can eliminate the bad wire all together???

Response From Tom Greenleaf

It's impractacle to replace the "whole" wiring harness since you know the area now. If this is that common they may sell a section with a new connector for the car. -T

I need to check out things a little more before I try to change the wire harness or part of. I was wondering if anybody had any wire diagraims for this year other than the haynes manual and if you know which relays are which on the front left fender???????
Thanks

Response From DanD

Here are the best diagrams I can come up with, I’m not sure what you’re looking for on them, you already know where or approximately where the problem is. A wiring diagram shows you how things are wired not how the harness is routed. Well not on these older diagrams anyway. Don't ask me why one part is in color and the other isn't, because I don't know. They are for the same car though.

This is a schematic of the left shock tower showing the relays.

Thanks dan for the diagrams. The hanes manual did not show the Fuel pump relay at all so I was getting confussed on the wiring but your diagram helped and it lead me in the right direction. to the fuel pump relay which seem to have the bad connection.

Response From DanD

Glad you found the problem.
Dan.

Just to add: If you find a corroded connector - check others. Rust buster then grease them up. I use a flux brush in a cap of silicone grease.

If you find a splice as Dan suggested I would cut that whole area out and solder in new wire. I really like the product called "liquid elecrical tape" -- way better than real tape and comes brush in cap. dries quick so put the cap back on. Napa sells it and so does Home Depot and no doubt others. Get rid of that problem! - T

93 Plymouth Acclaim Fuel Pump Relay/Wiring?

Question From pouq on 93 Plymouth Acclaim Fuel Pump Relay/Wiring?

ok, So heres the deal, i replaced the strut on my acclaim and when i dropped the car to drive it out of th garage, no start, turned over key, fuel pump did not kick in, so ok, fuel pump is gone, no biggy, got a new one, put it in, went to start car, new fuel pump didnt kick in either, so we bench tested it, and the new one ran just as good as the old one did, to find out, the fuel pump isnt getting any electricity, So we have done lots of reading on here and got wireing diagrams, we have searched the wires, we DID find a few corroded wires, but we fixed those(solder then shrink tubeing). The relay is only clicking once and a while, not everytime we turn the key, On this diagram ( ), there is the wire that goes to the fuel pump, there is a connecter in that wire somewheres, we think it might be here, but we cannot find the connector at all, does anyone have any ideas or know where this connector can be found?

Response From DanD Top Rated Answer

I know it’s hard to see in that diagram but the only other connector desides the relay and the pump shown; is B/H conn 24; which stands for bulk head connector, terminal 24. That’s one of the large connectors on the firewall, going through the firewall. I’m not saying there isn’t anymore but that’s all that’s showing. I wish these older diagrams would also give locations of splices and connectors like a lot of the newer vehicle diagrams do; but that would make things too easy. LOL
You probably already know this but the fuel pump will only cycle on for a few seconds when the ignition is turned on, for what is called a prime cycle. The prime cycle only lasts as long as the check engine or power loss light is on before you start cranking the engine. That’s another question does the check engine light come on when you first turn the ignition to the run position?
The PCM will only command the pump, fuel injectors and primary ignition coil back on via the ASD (auto shut down) relay after it sees an RPM signal. So do you have a consistent spark during cranking?
Dan.

Question From richfrog on map sensor 93 plymouth acclaim

the fuel pump isn't pumping to the injector and i have no spark. was told it might be my map sensor. Need to know where it is locatedand any other suggestions asap this is my main tranportation to and fro work. no car no work can't walk 100 miles round trip a day.

thanks for listening
Rich

Response From DanD

The map is usually found on the right shock tower, it will have a three-wire connector and a vacuum line attached.
I don’t think a map would cause the fuel pump not to run or prevent spark but it’s electronics and anything is possible. Try unplugging it electrically the computer will use fixed values in its program, the car will run like crap but should run if the sensor has actually shorted.
When you turn the ignition switch to the run position, do you hear the fuel pump run its prime cycle? You may need to get under the car near the tank to actually hear it while someone turns the ignition on for you. Or you could disconnect the rubber fuel feed line that leaves the shock tower close to the TBI unit and see if it will spray fuel into a container during the prime cycle. The prime cycle will only last 2 to 3 seconds.
Is there an injector pulse at the injectors wiring harness to test that you should use a powered test light or a noide light so you do not cause damage the injector driver that is in the computer. These tools are a low ampage lights to check the circuit.
Does the check engine light come on for a couple of seconds when the key is first turned to the run position?
You say you don’t have spark if that is right you won’t have fuel other then the prime cycle. The computer needs to see spark or I should say a RPM signal before it will authorize the fuel pump to run again. It’s a safety feature no spark no fuel.
These years of Chryslers had a problem with a feed wire corroding inside the wiring loom and not feeding the ignition and or fuel systems, but we won’t go there until you can answer the above questions. I don’t want to take you in the wrong direction.
Dan.

Response From richfrog

well I'm back to ask about the feed wire you were talking about. I have a mechanic from my shop at work and he used to work on cars. he's as stumped as i am. he has checked the computer and has determined it has power. he only has a hand held reader and can't get into it.If you could tell me the which wire or the name i told him i would let him know and maybe he;ll know which one your talking about. I really appreciate this help.

The feed wires I am referring to are the ones going to and leaving the auto shut down relay.
You haven’t answered my questions about the fuel pump, the injector pulse or whether the power loss light comes on for a couple of seconds when you turn the key to the run position so it’s kind of hard to help from this end.
But here’s a wiring diagram for what I’m assuming is your engine, a 2.5 liter 4 cylinder. There is more then one feed to the computer so finding one may not be enough.
Start at the auto shut down relay and make sure the red/white wire has constant power to it and that the dark blue wire has power on it with the keys in the run position.
The dark green/orange wire is what feeds the ignition coil, injector and a number of other items and will only have power on it for a few seconds with the key turned to the run position. (Prime cycle)
After the computer receives and ignition pulse from the pick-up coil in the distributor the computer will turn the auto shut down relay back on to run the system.
If you have the power feeds as I tried to explain then check the pick-up coil.
To test the pick-up coil unplug it at the distributor, turn the ignition to the run position set up a way to test for spark at the ignition coil. Now jumper the two connections I’ve tried to draw in my diagram. Making and breaking the connection very quickly will make the computer think that there is an ignition pulse and fire the coil, turn on the fuel pump and probably fire the injector. Make sure you are jumpering the cars side of the harness not the pick-up coils.
If it does that then replace the pick-up coil after you have checked that the ignition rotor is actually turning.
Hope I didn’t loose you if so post back.
Dan.

Hey Dan, I'm having similar problems with my '92, 6 cylinder Acclaim. It just died one day. I don't hear the fuel pump and there's no spark. Could you possibly furnish me with the wiring for this vehicle. I'd SO appreciate it. One auto parts store told me it could be the coil and/or the control module under the distributor and that the module should lift right out. Well, it didn't. Who knows what he was looking at as all this took place over the phone.

I'm kinda stranded here with no help. I did notice that right in front of the air cleaner, there's a little box that kinda looks like a relay. A couple of the wires are bare as they lead into this box. I have no idea what that "box" is. There's several wires leading into the end that I could see from the driver's side of the car.

I don't know that much about cars, but I'm not afraid to get in there to check things out. Help if you can. Thanks.
Snow

Response From DanD

Here’s the diagram for ya hope it helps.
Dan.

Response From Snowblind

Dan, Thank you for the diagram. Don't worry, I'm not going to attempt to fix this myself. I just like to know what I'm looking at. Especially since I'm being talked thru some of this over the phone. It'll most likely end up in the shop... again... sigh. What I might do is check the error codes and put them on the other forum. Thanks again.

Response From DanD

I’m not at the shop right now but when I get back there I’ll try and post something for you.
A wiring diagram is a great tool and can be very useful, as long as you have a working understanding of how the system is intended to work. If you don’t have this understanding then this tool is as useless as handing a plumber’s pipe wrench to a gynecologist. LOL
After saying that if you have any other questions don’t be afraid to ask, we’ll all try and help.
Dan.

Response From Tom Greenleaf

I'm not strong with Chryster products but will say that happened to a similar older one. Two faults at once and it turned out to be the computer which was located on passenger's kick panel and was getting soaked and salted by a rust hole.

Just a stab - Try disconnecting neg battery cable for a couple minutes which resets computer if it works.

Also - check owner's manual if the car has a resetable device that shuts the systems down in case of an accident to help prevent fires.

Hope some others will jump in quick for you that may know more. I don't think the map sensor controls both, spark and fuel but I'm not sure,

Response From richfrog

THANKS A MILLION THE WIRE YOU SAID WAS BROKE!!!!!! IT WAS REPAIRED ONCE BEFORE BUT BROKE IN A DIFFERENT SPOT ..ALL FIXED AND RUNNING THANX AGAIN

Response From DanD

I tried to post earlier but got busy and didn’t finish so I’ll try and post more tomorrow when I’m back at the shop and hopefully post a wiring diagram for you.
Dan.
