2000 Hyundai Sonata - Hesitation on Hills

Question From WillCA4 on 2000 Hyundai Sonata - Hesitation on Hills

2000 Hyundai Sonata GLS, V6, Auto, 76K miles. Having problems with hesitation-stumble/power loss primarily when on hills - at any speed. If I downshift to raise rpm's problem goes away - put back into drive and it comes right back. Tried so far: changed the air filter, cleaned the mass air flow sensor, cleaned the throttle body, replaced the pcv valve and it's hose, added fuel injector cleaner to gas tank. Other info - an oxygen sensor was replaced at 71K, speed sensors were replaced at 50K. Thanks for any help you can offer.

Response From WillCA4 Top Rated Answer

Thanks for the info. I checked the plug wires (all 6 lead to a single coil) and coil and did not see any damage or burt issues. The plugs were replaced about 25K ago with Bosh Platinum. I started the car and it was now running rough, and after driving about 1 mile gave check engine message. Went back and checked the code: PO305 - Cylinder 5 Misfire detected. Pulled the plug (not sure of the firing order on this car, but assumed 5th was center plug closest to front of car) and it did not look bad - neither white nor black and oily. If you think this is still ignition problem then I will likely replace all the plugs, then wires, then the coil to try and solve this. If you think something else please let me know, thanks again.

Response From way2old

Sorta looks like you are checking the wrong plug. Look below.

Response From paulklux

It sounds like you have an ignition problem
There is three main problems the sonata has with ignition.

1) Spark plugs - generally if worn or if just recently replaced make sure they are Hyundai original plugs as some non genuine experience the fault you have experienced
2) Coils - remove and look for burn marks around coil
3) Ignition leads if it is type with just two ignition coils - again you will see burn track marks on them - insulate the stems of coils and leads wth insulating tape

grinding scraping and knocking noise Hyundai

Question From sasv83 on grinding scraping and knocking noise Hyundai

Hi I have a 2008 Hyundai Accent GLS car with about 97k miles. I am having a lot of trouble with my car...a week ago I noticed that my car made a pinging sound when I accelerated. I switched to a higher octane of gas thinking that it would be a temporary fix for a leaky fuel injector. Then today the car started to knock and ping, there was a loud scraping noise, and the brakes seem like they were harder to operate. Do you have any ideas of what this could be? Any advice would be very helpful. Thanks! Also, I recently had my timing belt and water pump replaced.

Response From Tom Greenleaf

I think something failed with the timing belt job and you should have that checked asap. Brakes more difficult is probably a side effect of low vacuum assist power due to low intake manifold vacuum. When that's wrong the engine just doesn't know what to do.
Hurry and have the belt/pump work checked out,

T

Response From sasv83

Thanks for your advice. It turns out that it was the control arm. I'm glad that I didn't drive it further than around the corner to the auto mechanic or else my wheels might have come completely off!

Response From Tom Greenleaf Top Rated Answer

Glad it's fixed. The moral of this story is that noises are difficult to describe vs on-sight inspection by tech. Words used naturally differ as well.

When a tech hears of complaint of "knock" or "ping" at least speaking for myself it leads me to engine knocks and pings as in fuel firing all wrong at the wrong time not a suspension component!

Noises are warnings never to be ignored as it's chiefly unknown if just an annoyance or a serious safety issue as this seems to have been and would have suggested not to drive this at all!

Did you get an explanation as to what the problem was with this control arm? Worn out, left loose or broken in some way?

If that was plain wear over time and use I am surprised there wasn't more warning or that it was noticed a lot sooner,

T

Response From sasv83

Yeah I do not know a lot about cars but thought it was the engine too. I am glad it isn't and will be a lot cheaper to fix (our mechanic is charging us $250). I don't know why the control arm went bad, but I live in New York State and there has been a lot of snow and salt this year. It's been making a bell like sound when accelerating and then last week all of a sudden it turned to a crunching, squeaking and knocking noise and also sounded like something was dragging. I also saw that Kia/Hyundai recalled the control arms on the Tiburon minivan. Maybe the other models are having the same problem, I don't know. Thanks so much for giving suggestions. I like sites like this so that I can figure out what might be wrong with stuff since I do not know much about it.

Response From Tom Greenleaf

From inland Mass. so no stranger to rust issues usually first noticed as we know as ugly body metal rust showing but definitely causes real harm to structural metals as well and can quickly.

Now I suggest if one side did this how carefully was the other side checked out? Guess this should be on your list of things to check or have checked to be ahead of such problems. Brands don't seem to matter all the time just some seem to fare better than others up to generating recalls as losing wheels and total control of a vehicle is wildly dangerous made worse as it can happen by total surprise!

Do learn and enjoy learning from sites such as this. This particular site is free to use and a volunteer site from regulars likely to reply to you.

All the suggestions and even pics are inadequate compared to plain looking at and inspecting something in person, extent of rust and how important will vary.

If it moves you have to pay attention. Good luck,

Tom

Hyundai Coupe wont start

Question From byrne493 on Hyundai Coupe wont start

2003 Hyundai Coupe 1.6 petrol 49000 miles.
Left lights on , battery went totally dead after a few days. Got out jump leads and did something very stupid, connected leads to wrong poles and tried to start. Then realised my error and connected the correct way, engine turned over but would not start. Bought new battery and installed but no joy, now engine would not even turn over. Then discovered that main battery fuse (120 amp) had blown, replaced fuse but still no success. I have checked the relays and fuses and all seem O.K. Lights, wipers, electric windows all working. Horn, heater blower and radio not working ( could this be a clue to problem). When I turn ignition nothing happens, I can hear a buzzing from area of fuel injectors. I think Hyundai coupe is same as tuberon in U.S. Two of the relays , main and start, I put into a friends car and they worked fine. The other relays I checked by switching around and checking that lights continued to work. One more thing, my fob will unlock the doors but will not lock them.Car had been running fine before this stupid jump lead connection Any advice would be much appreciated.Byrne493

You've probably fried some modules so you probably will have to tow it to a competent shop.

Question From roadhabib on Trouble starting.

I have a 2004 Hyundai Sonata about 50,000 miles and when my car sits for a while and I go to star it, It takes a while to start. 3-5 seconds it turns over fine but just takes a while. cranks alot before starting. After the car is started I go to start it again then it starts just fine afterwards. but if it sits for a long period of time then it does it again. I just put in a new battery and that made no difference. I'm kind of leaning to a fuel filter issue. What do you think it can be?

Response From roseygirl

Can you please tell me if you ever resolved this problem? I have the same exact problem with my 2004 sonata. My mechanic changed the fuel pump and filter but it didn't solve the problem. I have checked the battery, alternator and starter and their all good as well.

Response From Hammer Time

This question is nearly a year old and belongs to someone else. If you need help, then start a new question of your own.

Response From Natasha Top Rated Answer

Definetly sounds like fuel problem, injectors maybe, try running fuel injector cleaner on a regular basis.

Response From Hammer Time

Forget the3 fuel injector and tank additives. You need to use a fuel pressure gauge on it in the morning before starting and watch what the fuel pressure does. Both how long it takes to come to full pressure and whether it holds rest pressure when shut off. You could have a bad check valve in the fuel pump causing the fuel to siphon back into the tank overnight.
