1995 Dodge Ram Question

Question From CBMerl on 1995 Dodge Ram Question

Good evening, gentleman.

I've a 1995 Dodge Ram 1500 Pickup. Once I reach to around 70mph, I truck tends to shake. Anything under that, it runs very smoothly. It is not just the engine, but the whole thing. Someone mentioned to me that it was being the tread on my tires were wearing out. That is would end, once they were replaced. I've also heard the fuel filter needs to be replaced. But was told by a mechanic since the filter is attached to the fuel pump, than the whole pump needs to be changed out.

I was wondering if I could get a second opinion on this.

Thank you to all who respond to this topic.

Response From Hammer Time

The fuel filters in those are not supposed to ever require service.

Response From re-tired

The key word here is SUPPOSED . Wish I had a $100.00 for every one of those lifetime filters I changed . Come to think of it I do.

Response From Hammer Time Top Rated Answer

I have never seen that filter cause any kind of driveability problems and Chrysler doesn't recommend changing them for maintenance reasons.

Response From re-tired

I guess its just luck of the draw . To be honest ,the majority of the tme it wasnt the filters fault . Ive had 3or4 with unkown substance in tank, one of which was sugar , guess he made someone mad. A couple with pump failure , cutomers wanted everything in tank changed . And there was a few that were resticted , as i recall one guy drove on dirt roads with rag in tank . yea he had a check eng lite but did not care until power suffered. So in a nutshell I suppose your statement is correct.

Response From CBMerl

Thanks alot, gents.

I suppose I can get the tires changed and rotated/aligned and see how that goes. Since my filter is SUPPOSED never require service.

Appreciate the advice.

Response From Tom Greenleaf

Guess: Large tires and wheels need be tended to often! Make a habit of noting rotation of tires and with trucks and especially if a 4X4 like every 3,000 miles. Simple front to back and then crosed the next time. If tires or wheels are messed up the only answer I know of is new stuff. BTW - 70 MPH for a truck is enough!

Response From autojoe

what is the year?mechanical fuel pump problem possible if not getting fuel to carb or plugged fuel filter. If fuel injected fuel pressure would have to be checked.

1996

Response From autojoe

don't just pour fuel into intake.Best is to spray carb cleaner.Since it starts when fuel is added it is a fuel problem.Do you hear fuel pump run for 2 seconds when key is turned to the on position...not start position....on position? What size engine?

Response From autojoe

take gas cap off and have someone turn key to on position and listen.Pump should run for a few seconds to pressurize the rail.

Engine Dies when accelerating

Question From madmax85 on Engine Dies when accelerating

I have a 2007 Dodge Ram 6.7 Cummings (44K Miles), this morning it started hard, when I accelrate the engine shuts off. It starts up and seems to idle fine, but when you step on the gas it dies. It has never had a problem with the Diesal Gelling and the Truck is inside a Garage. I was thinking Fuel Filter or Fuel Pump.

Response From mdaniel

With 44k miles on the truck, have you serviced the fuel system?

Response From Tom Greenleaf

Fuel we get suks - replace fuel filter a lot,

Question From woitw on 83 dodge ram lacks power

'83 dodge ram, 225 slant six, one barrel holly carb. engine idles fine ,but when i hold the brake and
put the throttle all the way down in drive the truck just bogs down.
smells like its getting plenty of fuel,i've adjusted the air needle seat in and out and cant get any improvement.
slowly give it the gas while rolling down the road, and it will pick up speed eventully .
doesnt backfire the book says 16 btc, distrib wont turn that far, only 12 btc
carbs been rebuilt twice, once lately. new fuel filter ,clean fuel
i just dont know.

Response From Hammer Time

Is the accelerator pump giving a full steady stream when the throttle is opened slowly?

Response From Tom Greenleaf

woitw

Look for accel pump action at Hammer said. Most stuff was adjustable on that carb. You say you can't turn dist to get proper timing then it should be able to be removed and put back one tooth such that you have the right range.

Also: Even the slant six can eat timing chains when older! Check how many degress of lash it has no to exceed about 5 degrees.

Idle mix screw(s) should be happy at about 2.5 to 3 turns out from bottom and shouldn't be messing them if idle is ok now,

T

Response From woitw

accel pump delivers no fuel if moved slowly, or very little at end of movement
good stream if moved quickly with engine off

Response From Hammer Time Top Rated Answer

Sounds like some carb problems. The accelerator pump at the least is not working properly.

Response From Tom Greenleaf

Hard to add to Hammer but it hasn't stopped me yet :-)

Have you checked for exhaust restriction? An easy way is to watch intake manifold vacuum at idle and again at no load ~2,000 RPM and it should be the same roughly.

If way off loosen a pipe (pre-converter) and drive it - it all improves just for the test a restriction can cause a ton of issues - carbs get confused!!

T

Response From woitw

bad gas dirty tank
dropped and cleaned tank used fresh gas and chemtool b12 ,new filter
cleaned and rebuilt carb
thanks for the help

Response From Tom Greenleaf

Thanks for follow up on the fix,
