Question From OldManRiver on Hyundai Erratic

All,

My 1999 Hyundai Elantra is having problems. It has lost all acceleration and when cold, will not hardly get up and go at all. The "check engine" light starts flashing in the middle of trying to accelerate, and the engines misses and sputters.

I think it is one of the sensors, but have no idea what to look for.

Response From newmechanic

blinking engine light means your cat is burning up so maybe you have a plugged cat that would cause poor acc and fine idle and the engine light

Response From OldManRiver

All,

New coils and a tune up fixed it. Mostly the coils. Found out these dual coils are problematic.

OMR

Response From zmame

Easiest place to start would be to check fuel pressure.. you may have enough pressure to run at low rpm's but not enough at high rpm's under a load

engine light flashing due to the missfiring

Sorry dude,

Not the problem. A friend thinks it is the EGR valve/sensor or something like that. Actually I think you thought I loose at high speed when it is crawling, sputtering through intersections as 2-5 mph and missing signal lights that has me concerned. Problem is much worse when the engine or car is cold.

Car accelerates well above 40mph, unless I really tromp on it, so highway traffic is fine. Any accessive "foot" in the accelerator shuts it down. I have to rock the accelerator to get going and if I happen to be on a hill going up and get stopped I'm in trouble. Actually the break over in operation of the engine is between 35-40 mph based on whether I am accelerating on the level, downhill, or uphill, but once the break over point is reached the car lunges into action and starts working right.

I used to have all the manuals for the car, then it was stolen and the thieves took my manuals, so will need links to online manuals to locate anything under the hood. Course I've checked and replaced the plugs, wires, etc to no avail.

Thinking about locating all the sensors, one by one, by following the wiring pulling each and cleaning, as maybe that will help. What do you think?

Thanks!

OMR

Response From Loren Champlain Sr

As zmane stated, a blinking check engine light indicates a misfire condition. Of course, there are a multitude of reasons that can cause a misfire. From your symptoms, it sounds like it is overfueling. By feathering the throttle, you aren't giving it more fuel, you are giving it more air. Shouldn't be called a gas pedal. Should be called an air pedal. Pull the spark plugs and take a look for fouling.

Response From OldManRiver

I think everyone is reading too fast, because you missed the part where I said I replaced the plugs and wires.

Also I know it is a sensor/computer issue as symptoms are those of an older car with timing advance/retard issues.

Car idles and runs fine above 2K RPM, but misses like crazy below that, which means the sensor or computer ckt that retards spark, when at lower speeds is not functioning correctly, so the erratic firing, sputtering and bucking, and thus no power or acceleration.

On highway car is fine, so just need to fix this lower RPM issue.

Thanks!

OMR

Response From Loren Champlain Sr Top Rated Answer

Uh, there are other things that will cause a misfire besides spark plugs and wires. Retarded or advanced timing won't cause a misfire unless the timing is waaayyy off. When's the last time you had the injectors cleaned? (and I'm not talking about the snake oil one puts in the gas tank) Or, a fuel filter replaced? A lean condition can cause a miss, whether it be from a partially plugged or faulty injector, or a restricted fuel filter. Have you had it scanned for codes? A knock sensor can cause timing to retard, but wouldn't explain the misfire. Hyundai's have a problem with coils, also.

1998 Hyundai Accent Problems(fuel or engine??)

Question From truenovian on 1998 Hyundai Accent Problems(fuel or engine??)

Hello,
I am having some car issues:s

MAKE: Hyundai
MODEL: Accent
YEAR: 1998
ENGINE: 1.5
KILOMETERS: 142,000
A little more than a month ago I bought a 1998 Hyundai Accent,For the first couple weeks the car worked great...needs a few minor things but nothing major. The guy that I bought the car from mentioned that one of the tie rod ends were going and something about the filler neck
I drive every day up a dirt road and down a dirt road back home(about 25 mins each way)to work,i've been doing this for 5 weeks now(first 3 weeks were fine).
I am now finding that my car doesn't really want to move,it goes and then pulls back, almost sputters I guess you could say, doesn't pick up speed quick.
I have just replaced the filler neck tonight and I tried to change the fuel filter but its stuck on there,I was told by the guy who tried to change it that it looks as if it's never actually been changed before.
However,I was told that by the actions of what the car is doing that it may be engine problems, so what I need to know is it more likely to be the engine?or dirt in the gas tank with the fuel filter as an issue? or other?....any info would be great

Response From Loren Champlain Sr

truenovian; The first things that I'd recommend checking would be 1) Air filter. Driving on dirt/gravel roads will increase the need of replacing it more often than 'normal'. 2) Fuel filter. You may want to take it into a shop for this, just in case a line breaks during replacement. But, it's going to have to be done.
The description of your symptoms sounds, to me, as a fuel delivery problem.

Car wont start hyundai accent 1997

Question From charlieja on Car wont start hyundai accent 1997

Ok,

I have a 1997 accent 1.3, car was idle for couple of weeks while i had new keys cut, but cant start it now.

So far battery seems fine, charged it, and its fairly new anyway, the plugs are new (and sparking) had top of fuel filter off and petrol pumps through, even tried spraying eths through air intake to see if that would spark it, no luck there.

Any advice would be greatly appriciated!

Response From zmame Top Rated Answer

Well if you have spark.. take the cap off filler neck put you ear neer it get someone to turn on key listen for fuel pump.. if you hear it check compression with a tester.. if all that passes see if your fuel rail has a shrader valve(looks like a tire valve steam see pic)
(picture from ford mustang 5L)

turn key on push valve should release pressurized fuel (watch your face). or rent, borrow, buy a fuel pressure tester

so after all that you have fuel (up to injectors), compression and spark so could be electrical issue with injectors

No pressure, but you hear pump : pump, blockage

Don't here pump, no pressure: pump, electrical (try hitting tank with rubber mallet while somone cranks it.. good way to test faulty pump)

no or low compression: broken timing belt or jumped time, or other internal issues

hope this helps :)

this is first steps to take to point you in the right direction

Engine problems with Hyundai diesel 1.5 CRDi

Question From Brajko007 on Engine problems with Hyundai diesel 1.5 CRDi

2007
Hyundai
Getz
1.5 diesel, 65 kW
CRDi
135 000 km

Dear all I have some odd problems with my car so I would need your friendly advice what to do.

My car has problems when started and driven in cold weather.
Car starts normally but when driven looses power (gas) dies on me, when I stop on a stop light and Im trying to start when moving my foot from clutch car dies immediately because rpms drop from 1000 rpms to 500 rpms in a second and car dies. This problem occurs periodically it has days when it is driven all works fine but it has days in the morning or when it is cold (bellow zero temps.) that has this problem. :(

In the past few weeks we changed: oil, oil filter, fuel filter, one bad fuel hose that goes from fuel filter to the engine, we cleaned our fuel tank, conducted testings via computer diagnostics it does not shows any errors, we checked fuel pressure valve and the valve works ok, we changed 2 bad starting heater electrodes (bosch), battery is ok.

And after all this problem occurs periodically, car for a few days works fine but then the problems starts and the car has these described problems for the next few days. :(

Anyone with constructive advice please advise...
