Question From CamminSSmaro on 1997 Chevrolet 1500, 305 V-8, fuel problems

I have a 1997 Chevrolet 1500 Silverado, Sometimes it runs great, then all of a sudden it try's to stall and don't want to take gas, anymore. Then the next time i drive it, it might run fine again. It does it all the time, Its very annoying. The truck has 140, 000 miles, Spark plugs, re-placed fuel filter, air filter good. The throttle body is smut-ed up pretty bad, when i look down into it. Any ideas would be appreciated. Can you please help me.

Response From Hammer Time

I have deleted all your duplicates. Please stay with one thread.

Response From CamminSSmaro

OK, Sorry.

Response From Loren Champlain Sr Top Rated Answer

Cammin; Agree with RT. Two important things to check: Fuel pressure (should be 60psi) and fuel filter. Do you have a check engine light illuminated when the engine is running?

Response From re-tired

When have you last done the basics; air and fuel filter, plugs wires , cap and wires, inspection of vac hoses?

1989 Chevrolet Silverado 5.0 ltr 191,000 miles

Question From br1en on 1989 Chevrolet Silverado 5.0 ltr 191,000 miles

I own a 1989 Silverado with a 5.0 ltr engine that was handed down to me.
Great looking little truck, but the engine spits and sputters when any load is put on it--especially if it has not been warmed up for 5 minutes.
When in park, it runs smoothly. When put in gear, the fun starts. The service engine light comes on and off intermittently.
The best way to describe it is that it acts as if something is clogging the exhaust and the engine is choking--but only when it is in being driven, not while in park.
I have changed the fuel filter and the exhaust system is only a couple of years old.
If anyone has any ideas of what it can be, I would greatly appreciate your thoughts.

Response From re-tired

First see if a parts house can read the codes . Maybe maybe not at that age. When was the last full tuneup? plugs ,filters(air & fuel), cap ,rotor and wires. Timing checked . The egr should be tested. You say the exhuast is fairly new , was the converter(s) changed also?

Response From br1en

Thanks Re-tired. I had a full tune-up done about a year ago. Not sure about the converter(s). I will try and get it to a parts house to read the codes and check the egr valve. Thanks for the advice.

Response From Hammer Time

The parts house can't read that one with a code reader but you can get flash codes very easily.

To extract a trouble from the computer for diagnostic purposes, the Assembly Line Communication Link (ALDL) connector is used.
Ground terminals A and B with the ignition "ON" and engine not running. The system will enter the diagnostic mode. In this mode, the computer will display a 12, three consecutive times, by flashing the "CHECK ENGINE", "SERVICE ENGINE SOON" or "MALFUNCTION INDICATOR LAMP" or light. A 12 consists of one flash, a short pause, then two flashes in rapid succession.
After 12 is displayed, any stored trouble s will be displayed by flashing the "CHECK ENGINE", "SERVICE ENGINE SOON" or "MALFUNCTION INDICATOR LAMP" light. All s are displayed 3 times each then a 12 will repeat. In the diagnostic mode, the computer will also energize all computer controlled relays and solenoids.
ALDL Connector (Located Underdash)
The ALDL diagnostic connector is located in the passenger compartment.

Hammer Time,
Thanks for the direction. I did what you suggested and ended up getting a code 44. Looked it up and it was O2, fuel filter, fuel pump, etc.
So today I cleaned the EGR valve, changed the O2 sensor, dropped the tank and changed the fuel pump and the fuel filter.
Running like a top now! It was the fuel filter. My best guess is that the rubber sleeve over the valve had a crack in it and was probably sending fuel back into the tank rather than through the fuel line. Again, thanks for your direction!

Response From Hammer Time

No, it wasn't the fuel filter. The pump maybe but the filter can't be the cause.
Code 44 means "lean exhaust" which could be caused by any of those things except the fuel filter. This is a high flow, circulating system. The fuel filter can lead to a fuel pump failure but can't be the sole cause of the problem. I suspect the fuel pump was probably the actual problem but changing the filter will help extend the life of the new one.

Response From br1en

Late night typing error--I meant to say fuel pump, not filter.

Response From Hammer Time

That would make more sense.

Response From br1en

94 chevrolet, need help!

Question From (:ksk:) on 94 chevrolet, need help!

Ok, I have a 94 chevrolet 1500 4,3L vort. I just recently changed the temp sensor(posted the old problem on here before) and it has ran fine for about a month, now its acting up again. I drove it home a few days ago and parked it, got up the next morning for work and when i tried cranking it, it cranked, idled for abt 15 seconds then died. i did this 8 times, giving it gas made it die quicker. I gave up, hitched a ride and when I got home it wouldnt even crank, for 2 days now it just turns over. pleeeasee help I have no idea what could be wrong!

Response From Hammer Time

Yep, if it's a Vortec, fuel pressure is the first thing to check. It needs over 55 PSI or it will not run.

Response From (:ksk:) Top Rated Answer

newer fuel pump, new fuel filter. i took the line off the fuel filter and turned the key so it would shoot through the filter, and it poured out, but it wasnt shooting a stream. how do I check the fuel pressure?

Response From Hammer Time

There is a service port on the line at the rear of the engine.

Response From (:ksk:)

service spot? and what do i need to check the pressure?

Response From Hammer Time

That was service port
How about a fuel pressure gauge...........
It just threads onto the fitting.

Response From (:ksk:)

well i gotta wait till monday to get a fp guage, but i undid my lines going into the throttle body and its squirting pretty good, but it still wont crank, makin a popping noise from exhaust too.

Response From (:ksk:)

Okay, today I had a friend look at it (he used to be a mech.) and he tried cranking. It made a loud backfire and he says timing. Is he right?

Response From Sidom

No, on this model you need to know what the fuel pressure is before moving on due to the system & how critical minimum pressure is....

Personally I have to use a gauge, I'm not good enough to be able to tell low fuel pressure by ear..........yet......

FWIW. In the diag world today, when someone comes in requesting "just the timing set", this is a huge red flag that they have a problem and no idea what it is....(unless they just fail smog due to a timing issue)

Response From (:ksk:)

alright, Im bringing it to my friends school tomorrow. there gonna check timing anf fuel pressure, i know i have spark. when it turns over it seems faster than normal, and it backfires every few seconds. but pressure is the first thing ill get them to check.

Response From speed

possibly but like HT has said check the fuel pressure. 1. its cheaper to check than timing. 2. its easier to check than timing. 3 its cheaper to fix than timing. 4. we cant know if it is or is not timing without being there. you need to check the fuel pressure first and personally i dont think it sounds like timing not from what youve said anyway. when you say it turns and turns you need to find out what is mising spark or fuel. if you have both then that would point to timing. but you need to confirm you have both before you suspect the timing.

Response From alienshadow

If you have pressure and it dosent crank be sure the injectors are spraying fuel out if so then you need to start with the module..

Response From Hammer Time

No Alien, this is a Vortec. You can't see the injectors. They are under the manifold. The fuel pressure is critical on this engine so get a pressure reading before doing anything else.

Response From alienshadow

Hammer thanks for correcting me I forgot it was a vortec...

Response From alienshadow

Not a mechanic here but I had a 93 chevy had some of the same issues maybe.. Have you cked fuel filter? Fuel pump? Could be a module has gone bad also... That was what was wrong with mine.. Hope this may help..

Need little more information what do you mean by "turn off".. Does it stall, sputter then stall.. car goes totally dead (interment cluster/lights inop, electrically dead). Please add more details to make it easier to help you.

1988 Chevrolet Sprint - Sputters/Misses/Bogs at Higher RPMs

Showing 2 out of 7 Posts | Show 5 Hidden Posts
Question From drako717 on 1988 Chevrolet Sprint - Sputters/Misses/Bogs at Higher RPMs

I have a 1988 Chevrolet Sprint - Non-Turbo/Carbureted

The problem I am having is that the car Sputters/Misses/Bogs or however you want to describe it
It feels like it misses when i start to get to a higher RPM (cant say how high because the vehicle has no tachometer)

I was having a similar problem in the winter while driving up the mountain
But we resolved the problem (or delayed it) by cleaning the points on the distributor cap

My immediate reaction was to Replace the distributor cap and rotor
Also replaced the spark plugs and wires but the problem still persists
We also cleaned the fuel filter

When decreasing the timing by adjusting the distributor the problem seemed to occur quicker

Our suspect parts are distributor and fuel pump
But are also wondering about any vacuum pods that could be causing the problem

Anyone have any ideas why this could be occurring?

Response From nickwarner

You don't clean the fuel filter, you replace it with new.

Put the timing back to spec and get the codes read. Post them here, and get a fuel pressure reading letting us know what that is while this is occuring.

Check for vacuum leaks closely. This car is old enough to be drinking in a bar and I would change every inch of vacuum line as protocol. If it doesn't fix this problem it will prevent the next one. Line is cheap and easy to change.

Response From drako717

Well i can go replace the filter which i probably will once this is fixed but it is not that
We checked the fuel pump and we were getting 4 psi of pressure out of it so that means the fuel pump is running fine

We checked the timing and it seems to be in time and the belt looks good

We were checking for vacuum and we are unable to get any vacuum from most of the vacuum lines
So i guess we will try checking out the vacuum lines and maybe one or some of them are clogged up

The PCV valve is working properly so that rules that out

Response From nickwarner

Don't waste the time to check them, just replace with new. Costs almost dirt to do so and if the vac advance line is collapsed it certainly shows that was the issue.

Response From drako717 Top Rated Answer

Yeah so problem turned out to be fuel filter *facepalm*

Thanks for all the help man

Response From nickwarner

Glad to hear it worked out and a cheap fix on top of it. Thanks for posting the fix too as you won't believe how many people look at these posts even years down the road to see what helped others in a similar situation.

Response From Discretesignals

Wow a Chevy Sprint. The car that is ranked third in fuel efficiency. I'd love to have one as a puddle jumper.
